Mac-exclusive
But you need to buy a Mac first, not use the computer you already have. Equivalently, Xcode costs $650 and comes with a free computer.

Platformer control on a flat sheet of glass
It costs 100 dollars to develop for iOS. Full stop
True, it's a lot cheaper to develop for iOS than to develop for PlayStation 3, but it's not $100 and done. It's $100 per year, plus $650 for the hardware dongle to run Xcode, even if you already own a computer.
But at least as importantly, iOS devices lack physical buttons other than "quit". As I understand it, very few people are willing to buy a Bluetooth gamepad such as iCade or iControlPad products just for one game. How else should a platformer like Super Mario Bros. series or Mega Man series be controlled on a completely flat sheet of glass?

What the hell Slashdot? You have to love a nerd news site that can't handle posting a tiny bit of code without frakking it all up. Screw Unicode support -- can we get some decent ASCII support sometime this decade?

Re:Won't happen
Honestly, I think PlusFiveTroll is right, old software will stay as long as physically possible, after which it will move to virtual machines.
I completely agree with this too. I've had success using a webcam through a VM which the host was unable to use because the vendor refuses to release new drivers.
Windows does it wrong, because they break compatibility with every version they release. Then again, that's their business model, and it's making them craploads of money.
Out of all of those operating systems Windows sucks the least (hear me out!). It runs more hardware, has more applications, and is supported far longer. Windows has the best backwards compatibility of any of the popular commercial operating systems out there. Lets see you run a binary from 1998 on a Mac today, Rosetta is being phased out and support for it is lacking in Lion, and not to mention they've switched architectures; or Linux for that matter, good luck piecing together ancient libraries. Your comment is more appropriate directed at their development tools. On the OS side Microsoft has steadily made improvements, most of the woes were from Microsoft enforcing good development practices, (example, see the "Store Application Data in the Correct Location", or Microsoft's general programming guidelines.) why do you think initially many applications required administrator access to run? Sloppy programmers.
Windows doesn't have a monopoly on sloppy programmers. Whether this is due to ease of development or coder competency is a different topic. Sloppy programming plagues companies big and small - just a few months ago ATI had drivers which would BSOD if ASLR and DEP were enabled. -
Re:Retina Displays?
The resolution of the iPad screen is listed http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/specs/ for any prosepctive buyer that cares to look. I don't understand your point. People are told the resolution. The actual pixel resolution is just not used as a term to market the product is all. Using technical specifications to market a product is not very common anymore, except for some specialty products, such as a car may be marketed by the amount of hp or kW the engine produces. But the general population dont choose a car based on its engine power and probably don't even care. Most astute buyers are more than capable of bypasssing the marketing terminolgy of any product they buy and select based on technical specifications that meet their needs.

Or similar stupid "widescreen" format
:-/You mean unlike Apple's stupid 4:3 "widescreen" format? Yes, they officially advertise their 4:3 screen as widescreen.
- - 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
- - 2048-by-1536-pixel resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)
-
Re:Retina Displays?
It's also a marking term that apple has trademarked. http://www.apple.com/legal/trademark/appletmlist.html
It won't mean much of anything once even the most basic screens exceed the retina display criteria.
Indeed, much like "VGA" doesn't really mean anything these days. (what are we up to? WQRPFGHD3DVGA by now?)
All my point was addressing was the OP's assertion that the term was "useless and meaningless" when in fact, it is well defined with a specific meaning.
-
Re:Retina Displays?
It's not like Apple doesn't also list the tech specs. They list both inch measurements, resolution, and PPI. See, e.g., http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
They are cheating a bit on those specs, the Apple Retina devices, including Macbook Pro, doesn't have the marketed resolution as real adressable resolution that can be used to increase the size of the desktop/what information you can fit on one screen. It is basically just dumb pixel-doubling, except for a few applications that have specific support, like making text sharper.
-
Re:Retina Displays?
They don't need to see the keynote. The formula is only for geeks. The meaning of Retina display is given in consumer oriented language in the description of the device.
http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/
The point of the formula is to disprove the assertion that this is just a marketing term.
-

Re:Retina Displays?
It's really too bad Apple doesn't specify the resolution of the iPad. Oh wait, it's in the first paragraph on their "features" page, along with a handy image comparing its resolution to a 1080p HDTV. It also clearly explains the purpose of a high-resolution display.
-
Re:Retina Displays?
Well, lucky for you, Apple has always published the iPad screen's specifications. http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Enterprise SDK
Sounds to me like you need to move to allowed and supported: https://developer.apple.com/programs/ios/enterprise/

Re:I don't get it
So it's slightly cheaper than an older iPad, but gets worse battery life. It has a fraction of the software of an iPad, and isn't as easy to whip out and use since you have to fold out the keyboard. It's less features than an netbook (which you could restrict down to be malware free) but at the same cost.
I'm just not sure about the value on these things.
iPad2: $399 ($529 with 3G). 9.2" 1024x768 screen. No keyboard
Samsung Chromebook: $249 ($329 with 3G) 11.6" 1366x768 screen, keyboard, touchpad, USB 3.0/2.0 ports, SD Card slot
I'm not sure I'd say that $150 - $200 is "slightly cheaper".

Re:We need better solutions
You should be able to log into your phone account from another device and retrieve the location of the phone, Maybe listen in and record calls from your phone, too.

Segment your network. Use ntfsclone. Cheap Macs
1) Segment your home network so that a compromised windows box can't reach your other computers. Use 2 or more NAT/wired/wireless boxes between your cable-modem and your computers. (I do much the same to keep my wireless and guest traffic away from my personal machines.)
1a) Ideally put a hub in there and silently monitor the network traffic (ON A SECOND MACHINE!) from the WIndows box by port, destination, and TIME OF DAY!
2) Get a bootable CD/DVD of Linux, a 2gig (or larger, though many older computers can't support larger than 2gigs) external drive, and make ntfsclone your friend. ntfsclone runs under linux. I've used it numerous times to back up and restore winNTFS partitions. Nothing like turning back the clock.
3) Restore frequently.
4) Use chrome rather than IE for webbrowsing. Put IE on its most restrictive settings anyway.
5) Watch out the "freebies" and downloadable stuff. To say nothing of drive-bys.
6) Reconsider Macs. They just work. You can get something decent for $1k new, or even $600 new, or for a lot less off cowboom. ($350? Though watch out for older hardware not running the latest versions of OSX.) (Also, you might check on educational pricing. Don't know if Apple does that for grade-school, but they've been lenient in the past.)
N) Graphics are pretty lean on the Lenovo T400 laptop. Processing power is low too. It might work on the lowest settings. Or you might need to consider a desktop. Newegg often has good sales, if you are comfortable putting the parts together. Try: http://hot-deals.org/ or http://slickdeals.net/.
N+1) You might suggest his friends try LOTRO too. It's a lot cheaper without the monthly fee! The recent release (as of last monday) now works with WINE on macs & linux, though you need a patch... And an official mac port is on the way.

Re:A lot of apps use SSL
Yes, it is a common mistake. That's why Apple has told people not to do what you're describing at pretty much every WWDC networking talk for as far back as I can remember, and devoted an entire chapter in their networking documentation to that subject.
I'm not seeing anything like the above in the Android documentation, which may explain why this is a much more common problem on that platform. And pretty much all the sample code I see on places like Stack Overflow and GitHub are wrong, which further compounds the problem. Want this problem to go away? Go to all those Stack Overflow pages and GitHub pages and flag them as inappropriate. Then convince someone to document how to do it the *right* way.

Re:Hey if China is whining about building them....
So you steal stuff by paying for it?
His point was that they bought John and now John doesn't contribute anymore. Presumably because he spends all his time on proprietary code.
I don't know if that's true, but his argument, as framed, is that Apple took FreeBSD's most valuable asset and didn't give back after that.
If you can believe his resume, he didn't do much (Open Source) coding in the years before he was hired by Apple. Now most of his code can be found at http://opensource.apple.com/

Re:I never expected my iPad to run OSX application
What is especially jarring is seeing all the tablet-esque window management misfeatures at play even as it has never been cheaper to have a couple of big monitors on your desk. In particular, the behavior where 'full-screen' on one application causes all your other monitors to blank to a grey background can only be Apple's way of giving the finger to their remaining pro users...

https://oo.apple.com/
if you haven't, you should.
this is what you get from a desktop browser
Opt-Out Was Not Successful
This device is not an iOS device. iAd Network advertising appears only on mobile devices running iOS 4 or later.
To opt out of interest-based ads on a device running iOS 4 or later, go to http://oo.apple.com/
If you have more than one device with iOS 4 or later, you must opt out from each one individually.
If you need additional support, visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4228but on ios, you get config setting with an on/off toggle. mine was defaulted to off (wonder if they remember my previous preferences).. didn't remember OO until I read this post..

Even more obscure privacy setting
Here is an even more obscure privacy setting. If you read through the privacy page here...
http://www.apple.com/privacy/
You'll notice about halfway down the page in the "cookies and other technology" section a discussion of interest based advertising, which is basically iAd's targeted at you based on your usage habits. The only way to opt out of this "feature" on an iOS device is to click on the link in that paragraph to http://oo.apple.com/ from Safari on your iOS device, which will bring you to a settings page that will allow you to disable "interest based iAds". I have not found a way to get to this setting page through the settings App (queue up the people who will promptly correct me). -

Disabling personalised ads doesn't stop tracking..
If the user has limited ad tracking, use the advertising identifier only for the following purposes: frequency capping, conversion events, estimating the number of unique users, security and fraud detection, and debugging.
In other words, disabling targeted/personalised ads doesn't disable tracking at all.

Your numbers are off
Wow, modded up for outright factual errors? This is what
/. has come to?The iPad's retina display is 2048x1536, not the 25% larger 2560x1536 that you claimed. Way to pull bullshit and expect us to bite... (source: http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/)
That said, the new iPad's display is 3145728pixels. The Surface RT's display is 1366x768, for a total of 1049088 pixels. Three of them combined would have all of 1536 more pixels than the new iPad. If you'd claimed "3x Microsoft Surface 32GB tablets to yield the same combined resolution: $1497" you'd have, at least, been accurate.

Some thoughts from an iPad user.
If you want to store more photos, why don't you get a bigger SD card for your camera. At $700/64GB the iPad makes for a very expensive SD card replacement, if that's actually the role you've envisioned for it.
Nevertheless, apple offers the iPad camera connection kit for people who would like to use the iPad as you've described. My brother has the camera connection kit, but he never uses it. I think Apple offers it simply to overcome this objection at the time of sale, since once you actually have an iPad, it'll never occur to you to use it this way.
It's a lot like the keyboard dock (which Apple no longer sells) in that regard. Once you use the iPad, you really see that there's no sense attaching a keyboard to it. But there are a lot of people who think they're really clever and say "it needs a physical keyboard," that's why MS has this clever keyboard cover doohickey. They don't expect people to actually use it, but the still want to be able to sell it to people who think it needs to be a laptop because they can't wrap their brains around the concept of a tablet. It's really just a clever bit of hand-holding to help bridge legacy users such as yourself into the modern world of tablets and wireless computing.

Re:Oh all right, most profitable then
No.
Neither Apple (PDF) nor Lenovo (PDF) show their profits per product segment, although Apple does show its revenues ($4,933,000 on Macs, down 3% from this quarter last year).
Comparing the overall profits and revenues from both companies would be pointless here as we're specifically discussing their PC lines, not their phones or tablets. Unless you were planning on pulling a strawman to expand the scope.

Re:Yes.
Intel does make Quad-Core Core i5 processors, check this link http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/277574-28-intel-dual-core-quad-core . And Apple has used them in its computers , my 2010 27 inch iMac has one - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588 .

Re:Hey if China is whining about building them....
You can still get kernel sources. Here's the kernel for 10.8.2. AFAIK, OS X's xnu kernel has never been closed source unless you count the delay after each major OS release while they clean stuff up....

Re:Yes.
If you want to try to do a more direct comparison, the Win 7 -> Win 8 period for that $70 upgrade encompasses OS X 10.6 ->10.8 for a combined price of $79.
...per household. The Mountain Lion upgrade was $20 and applied to every compatible computer you own.
