    This is more of a general rant than about the specifics of this case, but since the discussion has veered into general free speech issues, I think it's appropriate.

    Thanks to the DMCA and similar restrictions, publishing information on cracking dongles (hardware keys for software) is basically illegal. Concrete details on how to crack a dongle definately is. The people putting up information on cracking dongles usually do so for the sole purpose of encouraging others to use illegal copies of software. Clearly the dominant use of this information is criminal.

    So what's the harm in censoring this speech?

    Well, several years ago I was asked to investigate adding copy protection to a new software product (now defunct). My initial research focused on "respectable" publications on the subject. I found almost nothing useful. If the information I found was to be believed, dongles were practically impossible to defeat. So I extended my search to cracker sites. Now I found something. I discovered that all dongle technologies have been defeated on a case by case basis. I discovered which dongle technologies were trivial to defeat and which were very hard to defeat. I learned specific, concrete weaknesses and arguments for and against dongles. With this information I was able to provide solid information for my employers to use to make a decision.

    Let's say that the information on dongle cracking had been removed from the web. Well, my research would have been mostly fruitless. I would have had to largely rely on the misleading claims of the manufacturers themselves and reviews that didn't make serious attempts to defeat the dongles. However, the crackers would still have access to the information, passed around via instant messaging, password protected ftp, email, and other techniques. Dongles would still be insecure, but I wouldn't be able to make reasoned decisions about them.

    • We already have a public data repository. Just encrypt all your important documents, post them to various usenet groups, and let Google permanently archive them.

    Rather abusive of all those poor News Servers out there, isn't it?

    If you have access to a Web Server, you might be able to get the Wayback Machine to capture it for you.

    Or, if you can keep the web server up, just access it from your own Web Server. You wouldn't be screwed if your machine went down or became inaccessible as long as you could get to the Google Cache.

    That's fucking ridiculous. I had to take a test to get married in the Catholic church but we let tons of unwashed lusers onto the net without any kind of supervision or licensing at all! We really really REALLY need an Internet license with a stringent testing structure that covers basic OSI layer model, networking fundamentals, netiquette, etc.

    What an amazingly elitist attitude. Why should you care if someone doesn't know they can use more than one browser? How does it possibly effect you if some AOL user sitting in his house browses the web with his modified version of IE rather than Mozilla?

    It's amazing the number of people who measure a person's worth by their ability to operate a computer. Next time you're in need of some surgery, pick your doctor based on his knowledge of Linux rather than his ability to cut you open and put you back together without killing you. One slip of the scapel and you'll realize that computer knowlege is not the ultimate arbiter of intelligence or ability.

    The only people whose value should be measured by their ability to efficiently and intelligently use a computer are people who use them to make their living. I know this may be hard to believe, but some people just don't care about computers any more than any other appliance.

    You might as well except that the web isn't going back to the days when only geeks knew about it. If you can't deal with that, put on some Nirvana tunes and try the Wayback Machine. You can pretend it's 1992 and all is right in the computing world (and think of all the money you'll make on the upcoming dot-com bull market!).

    The first version (that I saw anyway) was clearly using Monopoly-The-Game inspired graphics, including the little guy. That's what probably gives them a case. I'd have to say it's fair if you started out ripping off the trademarks in the first place.
