  1. Couldn't this be circumvented by a proxy server? on SCO Chair's Anti-Porn Act Advances In Utah · · Score: 1

What would stop the people that this law seeks to "protect" from using a proxy service on port 80 to access the censored information? As far as I understand proxies (which isn't a lot), nothing. Quite a few of the network applications I have installed have settings to connect to port 80 instead of the default port, if only to avoid corporate firewalls.

  4. Re:Wow. on CA State Offers To Prepare Simple Tax Returns · · Score: 1

In general, flat taxes benefit the rich to the disadvantage of the poorer people in a society.

If I make £8,000 and the tax man takes 20% of my salary, the impact on me will be far higher than on someone earning £32,000, because the cost of living has a base.

The closest you're likely to get to a reasonably fair flat-rate tax system is to have a threshold (say the average cost of living in an average city), which is effectively the same as the simplest progressive-rate tax system. But if you also have a state sales tax, this shifts the tax burden away from the richer members of society towards the middle classes (starting with those who have an income £1 above the threshold) due to the regressive nature of value-added taxes.

Also, this might help combat the "Debian [stable] never includes new stuff" meme. Another good thing.

"New" is relative. After stable switches from Woody to Sarge, it is highly unlikely that you will get a new version of GNOME until Etch becomes stable. So no, Debian stable will never be the place to look for new stuff, except when the stable version changes, but then that is the whole idea.

One ought not to think one's country is better because they can defeat another country in battle. When did destruction become more important than creation? You recommend voting for the Lib Dems. They will replace the Tories in about 15 years (when the last remaining Tory voters have died of old age), and then we're back in the same shit situation.

You shouldn't vote for someone because they're not the main two. People need to get off their collective arses, and read about what each party believes in and then make an informed decision.
