void main() is not illegal! At least it didn't used to be. I know for a fact it works with TC++ 3.0 for does and all of microsoft's compilers. I believe that if you are usinig true C++ then you have to have some return code, but I'm not sure

He's right. Even though many compilers accept it, it's illegal according to the ANSI/ISO standards. I understand the misconception though, because ALL my teachers at college use void main(). I didn't realize the truth until i started reading Newsgroup FAQs who referenced the ANSI/ISO standards. In fact, i have BOOKS that use void main()! All the online literature i've read shows those books as incorrect, however.

Why does AT&T think they can tax the Internet when even the majority of the Gov ernments have adopted a hands off policy in relation to taxes . We the ISP's pay more than enough to the backbone providers for the Internet connections. Then on top of that we again have to pay premium prices for the Broadband circuits. Each of which is taxed. With a t1 starting at around 750$ minimum for the line and 1000$ minimum for the Internet service per month. Then we have the equipment, Advertising, support, and billing. Each of which adds an operating cost to the providers. The bad part is that any additional costs will be passed on to the enduser.

I have a simple solution that will rather quickly put an end to any major corporation, which initiates a plan of this nature. As a network administrator the first step I would take is block any and all traffic from AT&T to my customers and my sites to AT&T customers. If enough ISP's and larger service providers took similar courses of action, we could end this policy within 2 days max.

Who is your phone company? "Anonymous Call Rejection" doesn't cost any extra for any of my local phone companies (above the cost of Caller ID).

There is also a privacy protection system available from some phone companies that, above the anonymous call rejection, will ask that people with "out of area" calls identify themselves, similar to a collect call, before ringing your phone. It is then your option to accept the call or not.

Alternatively, for you, if those features cost more, is this: No Sales Calls. Unfortunately, it's Windows 95 or higher only, and requires a modem that has caller ID functionality. I haven't used it, so don't think of this as an endorsement.

Several generic and free systems have been availible for some time now on the internet. The first two that come to mind are:

These two jump out because while they are free on the net, professionally published versions are availible as well as support materials (shameless plug/full disclosure: I am a convention demo gm for Greyghost, the publisher of Fudge material.

RPG.NET has a list of 100 free games on their website and other free directories exist on the web. These range from the above games to jokes to GUPRS lite.

Finally, this idea was mentioned in Pyramid Online about two months ago with speculation that in five years all RPG material would be world based using one of:

GURPS
FUDGE

in the interests of money.

It's much worse then that. The estimates are that more then 90% of all silent features no longer exist in any form, and that around 50% of all films made before 1950 are lost. Certainly one reason why so many films were lost is due to the fragile nature of the films. Another interpretation of what happened is that these works were destroyed because they existed only as closely held copies, by companies that didn't appreciate their value.

Here is an example of how a single shortsighted business decision resulted in a huge cultural loss.

Around 1978, the Technicolor corporation stopped using the dye imbibition process.

Dye imbibition printing was the first commercially successful color movie process. With this process, instead of shooting a single color negative, the camera contained three negatives, and color filters. The result was three sets of negatives, one for red, one for green, and one for blue.

To make the final prints, each of the three negatives had to be individually cut and assembled to make a final negative. Then the negatives were printed onto a special film stock called "matrix" film, and developed using a special chemical process that hardened the film in proportion to the exposed silver content, then washed away both the silver and the unhardened emulsion. The result was that instead of a visible image on the matrix film, the color density was represented by emulsion thickness. Finally, these three matrix films were used as printing plates to transfer dye to the final release films, one color at a time, cyan, magenta, and yellow. The thicker parts of the matrix would transfer more dye, and the result was "Glorious Technicolor." Modern color film uses organic dye couplers, which tend to fade over time. Because Technicolor was using a printing process, they had their choice of what dyes to use, and they chose very bright, intense, fade resistant, acid based dyes. A properly made Technicolor print from 1939 looks the same now as it did the day it rolled off the printer over 60 years ago.

When color negative film was invented, the process changed slightly. Instead of making a matrix film from each of three negatives, all three matrices were made from the same color negative, using different color light filters to pass the desired color.

This process was very gentle on the negatives. A single matrix could be used to print hundreds of release prints, so the original negatives only had to be run through a printer occasionally when a new matrix needed to be made. The matrix stock itself was estar based -- an extremely strong, durable film stock that does not deteriorate over time like nitrate and acetate film.

When Technicolor shut down their dye imbibition production line, they were left with warehouses of matrix film; the printing plates for nearly every feature film ever printed in Technicolor, all meticulously cataloged and carefully stored.

In many cases, the matrices represented the last existing color record of the films. Color negative film, especially early color negative film, fades away over time, and release prints wear out, but the black and white matrices were completely stable. In many cases, the original nitrate negatives for many color features had already turned to dust, leaving the matrices as the ONLY existing preprint material available for countless films.

These matrices could have lasted nearly forever. Now that Technicolor has revived the dye imbibition process (The new, beautiful re-issue of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window is in true Technicolor), had Technicolor saved their matrices, they would have the ability right now to reprint nearly every film that they had ever made. In perfect color.

Instead, seeing no use for this "obsolete media", they destroyed them all.

Now, the cost of restoring a single Technicolor film, if it can even be done, can run into the millions of dollars. The result is that it is hardly ever done, except for a very few extremely high profile films, like, for instance, "Gone With The Wind" or "Rear Window". What a loss.

But we haven't been borrowing money only from ourselves. 38% of the national debt is owed to foreign interests. And did you realize that the federal government is paying $364 billion/year (as of 1998) for interest on the debt? That's more than 10% of the national budget, and it could be returned to taxpayers every year if we were to pay off the debt. Besides, the sheer size of the debt keeps interest rates artificially high, making it more expensive for people with mortgages and credit card balances.

Hate to spread ill will, and all, but you have to understand that to some people (A lot of whom are Linux/Slashdot regulars) these things matter. Keeping alive memories of a time when MS were only king of the hill in the US, and different thinking was embraced.(not Apple's 'Different Thinking(tm, patent applied for)). That the ethos that made this possible (allowed international users the ability to hold off MS domination for 10 years) is still present, and those that share it are now doing something tangible about it, IS geek news. Geek news is about using technology for the good of more than a select few, NOT just restricted to x86/Linux issues.

Being in the majority does not automatically make you right. (Otherwise umpteen-million Windows users couldn't be wrong ;-) )

I'd never agreed with the 'Open-Source, Closed-Minds' sig until today, but you have swung my ideas firmly in that direction. If you persist in this attitude, in a few hours, time and story posting will remove this story from the front page. Given that Amiga stories are a relatively few and far between occurrence, you will not have to worry about this until next month. But you're shutting off a world of experience if you discount everything beyond your own sphere of interest.

Man couldn't fly without studying birds. Evolving wings is an obsolete notion, but if you can build on that to make something new and good, surely that merits some attention?!

I see you agree with me on the Concorde. Also, while military fighters can go supersonic, they can't CRUISE supersonic, like the Concorde does. The exception is the F-22 which is not even in service yet.

True, current fighters can't cruise supersonically. That's not because it's technologically impossible, but because their mission profile doesn't require it. There have been military planes capable of supersonic cruise, though. In addition to the SR-71, there was the YF-12A interceptor version with similar performance, intended to replace the F-106 for interception of Soviet bombers. It never went into active service, though.

The other significant supersonic-cruise military plane was the General Dynamics B-58 Hustler. In service from 1958 until 1969, it was designed for supersonic cruise. How does a New York - LA round trip in 4 hours, 41 minutes sound?

The SR-71. I am not aware of a replacement of the SR-71 especially since it was brough back into service for the Gulf war. Why didn't they use a more capable replacement if they had any?

Because funding of military projects is based solely on political perception of needs...there won't be a replacement until the politicians believe (correctly or not) that we need a replacement.

I am fifteen years old.
At first I was going to write "JonKatz is one of the few adults that understands parts of our society that are being toyed with right now by political factions and industry groups."
Then I realized how few kids understand these parts of society. The truth is, the reason that all of this censorship and limitation is happening is at least partially because there are some kids out there that are "poor decision makers" as teachers and juvenile court prosecuters would put it. I realize that the IQ level of most of the kids reading and replying to Slashdot is above the average (send me money for that, Rob) and our situation is in no need of correction, but think of your classmates. Situation:
Teenager w/ Date:Can I get two tickets to Eyes Wide Shut...
Ticket Salesman:I'm sorry, you're not old enough to see this movie.
At this point, the Teenager w/ Date will have a strong adverse reaction. Where should our script go from here? Is it likely to be:
Teenager w/ Date (speaking to manager): As a political statement, I, and surely others, will not tolerate, and certaintly not support, this kind of behavoir towards the youth in general, which is a population segment so diverse and complicated that it can not be controlled by poorly though out and primitive measures such as these.
Or is it going to be closer to this:
Teenager w/ Date (speaking to Ticket Salesman: I'm gonna kick your fucking ass!
There obviously is something wrong in our youth here. And I think Katz knows it. People want to "identify". They write "Korn"and "Limp Bizkit", or maybe "Austin 3:12", or perhaps, "Master P" and "Silkk tha Shocker", depending on their style of brainwashing. When people do this, they're assimilating these production's content into themselves. Let's say Johnny sees a movie like Disturbing Behavoir, or The Faculty and sees that this kid drives a '72 Mustang, something not bad in itself, he also link it with other things in the movie... like homemade drugs or guns. And it builds up to what a "cool" movie is. So when his friend, Bobby, shows his a joint or even daddy's Magnum .357 (that Conyers shooting happened less than fifteen miles from my high school), he will be far less shocked, disgusted, and likely to think for himself by it, mostly because the images he likes and has adopted for himself remind him of the six degrees of seperation between drugs/guns/violence/stealing/polygamous lifestyles/etc. and coolness. Coolness is very important to "adolescents". Inumerable psychological studies show that adolescents want "acceptance" and "belonging", both of which are byproducts of being "cool" And an easy way to "belong" is to have a popular music artist or figure's name, maybe "Spice Girls" or "Leonardo DeCaprio". and being like others.
So what we have so far is that groups of kids are identifying themselves with poor role models' images in the media. So hold on kspett-- it is the media's fault that Bad Things happen -- that is what you're trying to say, right? Well, let me share with everyone the media products that I associate with. First, music. I listen to lots of different music, amongst which is some death metal. Like Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Cryptopsy, etc. It wouldn't suprise me much if you hadn't heard of many of these. They're pretty obscure. (Being "underground" is a much sought-after image, btw.) Common themes are: death, pain, suffering, killing, massacre, mutilation.... Very gorey... I'm also into movies. I have this fetish with old horror movies. I have a picture of Damien from The Omen in the final scene, where he's standing in front of the rows of crosses at the graveyard, in my wallet. In that movie there was decapitation, suicide, matricide, fratricide/sororicide (actually, since the sibling is in utero, you'll have to consult your political party to find out whether it's really murder or not.), strong anti-Christian themes, and lots of lots of evil in general. My two favorite directors are Quentin Tarantino and the late Stanely Kubrick. Both famous for their often disturbing imagery. And while Kubrick is so involvedin this topic, let me say a word about him. He was a genius. Sure, lots of people love A Clockwork Orange for gore and violence, but the man's directing abilities shine through in every one of his films. He was an artist. His movies were art. How many directors do you think there are that are in the position to make major motion pictures that want to create art. Lots you think? Let me tell you-- almost every movie put out today is all about success. And this is nearly garaunteed for movies that are oriented towards a teenage audience. The industry thinks we're idiots. I went and saw American Pie. And I saw something that I hadn't seen in awhile in a "teen movie". There was accurate socail commentary. The script writers understood the real pressures on teens regarding in sex and indivuality. Sure, it was graphic-- he had sex with pie!-- but it was accurate. A confused teen could learn to benefit from it. Anyway, this all should've been in a different section.
So, I should be a gun-toting Satanist hoodlum from the future who murders his mother slowly and painfully, then commits suicide in front of the US Marine Core, right? No. Want to know why?

I know better.
Do you know better? Do your children know better? I know who I am. I don't feel the need to "identify" with people and seek community with people who are just as directionless as I am? If most people were taught to think for themselves and define what characteristics their personalities will take on instead of applying pre-contructed figments of the media's fiction. Once you know how you want to live and be like, it's easy to keep the "ultra-violence" where it belongs -- on the screen. Bad "teen movies" wouldn't suceed if what was required of them was to have interesting and valid characters and plots-- not what they do now, which is supplying images. And once it was established that these movies wouldn't succeed on the basis of having drugs, violence, etc. alone, they would stop appearing. This is far more effective and desirable than trying to block the images from existence! Especially when we have the news -- Knowing about these events in detail and that they are real and actually occuring makes violence and terror far more casual and normal than putting them in obviously fictional scenarios. All the grotesque, violent, erotic, horrible movies in the world can't force their ideals on those who feel they don't need help finding principles to live by. Children need to be raised with morals and ethics. To be shown not to look to the tv and movie screen to teach them. And even then there are things before media censorship. Do you want to know why these things don't happen in say-- Germany? In Germany, the ice cream man doesn't hand out Glocks with the fudgecicles! The media is not the place to startthe crackdown! It's not even involved. And if the powers that be take away the movie theatres till I'm thirty, I've got a huge Sony projection television in my basement with Bose Acoustimass surround sound and five huge overstuffed leather chairs, not to mention a microwave and refrigerator. Oh yes, and most importantly... DVD.
