Re:So what?I remember watching an episode of the BBC's (very Microsoft dominated (as in, something major happens with Linux or Ubuntu or whatever, nothing. Some low-down Microsoft employee makes a comment about something he thinks might possibly someday become slightly relevant to some tiny niche and they spend 10 minutes on it)) Click program ( http://www.bbcworld.com/click ) and they had some "experts" (read: marketing guys) saying what the benefits of dual-core CPUs could be. All they could come up with was "You can use one core to do all of your normal activities, and use the other core to run antivirus and antispyware and firewall software constantly".
I almost cried.

Re:advertising - mod parent down idiotic troll !
owlnation (858981) wrote.... a load of crap that I can't even be bothered to quote!
Well you are so absolutely right the BBC would NEVER ever dare mention SKYPE in an article about Making phone calls over the net and clearly the very idea of the BBC having advertising on non-UK BBC channels like BBCWORLD is against their charter!
I suggest you check the BBC charter. Personally I think the BBC is excellent value for money, I do wish that Tony the croney would keep out of it but that's another issue entirely. Anyway I suggest you get back to writing about things you clearly know about like beautiful women that you will never ever meet as your clearly a muppet still living with his parents! -
Errrm
Maybe chris had troubles fixing computers, as stated here but we would hope there would be LESS of a need for 3rd party security apps with Microsoft's next gen Windows release...
btw, what about Kate Russell below him, I wonder how she feels about pentration testing...
I sacrifice my karma in the name of cthulu!! -
Re:TV problem
So we are not going to see BBC outside UK any time soon.
I guess these people may have a problem then!
The BBC have two channels that are on worldwide sat distribution, BBC World and BBC Prime. You won't be allowed to see them in some places like Iran, but then only if your dish is visible.

Re:No Max Headroom?
I can't think of any good reason why Max Headroom was left off this list.
Maybe because he now presents BBC World's Click Online ? (Technically sci-fi, but certainly not one of the top fifty.)

Click Online?
I am surprised Click Online was not mentioned. It has been available online for a number of years (thanks BBC World).

Good advice, but not sufficient
It's likely that most home computers at least are infected by worms rather than careless double-clickery. You can buy a computer as a novice home user, and it can get infected before you have time to patch it. Here's an amusing example, just one of many recent stories on the phenomenon: Jacques' Hack Attack
The same is probably also true for most infected corporate computers, even though those are some what better protected. -
Reprecussions for VOIP
Skype is bundled with the latest version of Kazaa, and Skype's CEO was a co-creator of Kazaa who jumped ship after the lawsuits first started. Since Skype is the most popular internet call provider, and there have been some attempts to hamper the progress of VOIP, will Kazaa's bad reputation affect VOIP in general?

Even BBC!
Just now i visited http://www.bbcworld.com/clickonline
.
And i get a HSBC POP UP AD ! I really did not expect pop up ads from someone like BBC!
I thought only cheap sites do it !
Are pop ads so inevitable - especially when sites themselves [ in this case BBC - click online - the tech programme! ] know that pop ups are annoying to users ?
Hm.....
Jus wondering,How long before slashdot.org brings in popup ads?

Re:What a waste of millions of quid in license fee
BBC World is the commercial arm of the BBC - responsible for selling (and making money from!) BBC-produced content outside of the UK:
www.bbcworld.com
(although the website is more about one specific channel) -
Re:You're a liar
The Reuters story you quoted is based on a hoax. See the BBC's retraction.

Re:Brave new World
Let's also not forget that the UK has CCTV cameras everywhere, and that cars in downtown London are tracked as well. Although this may have some real benefits (tourists being warned when they approach dangerous areas for instance)..

Re:Horizon was the "harder" science show.
Try BBC World. I get it on digital cable here in Canada. It's too bad I can't get my wife to watch documentaries and science programmes as I grew up on Horizon on BBC2.
I used to watch Tomorrow's World back in the 80's, but the last time I saw it I wasn't impressed. It had become too pop science. I remember it most for the Prince of Wales Awards for innovation (or whatever it was called).
I thought they were great, and gave me an alternative perspective (a good one too!) of Prince Charles in the days when everybody was obsessed with Diana. -
Much longer video interview
This article is just excerpts from a much more substantial video interview on BBC world. Ironically, the video interview is only available in Windows media, and the page doesn't display properly in Mozilla

Re:Your computer, your files, your friends!Gnutella is a totally different thing - it's a file sharing network that you might use to build a file library. Andromeda, on the other hand, is great for taking that collection ant turning it into a streaming web site (for your home/office network, over the Internet, etc).
It's true that I'm trying to sell my work, but please don't think that makes me evil! I don't think I'm all that much different from the independent musicians who you hopefully support. It all part of my diabolical plans to pay my rent.
On an entirely different note, I'm on the BBC today. Neat!

This will be obsolete in five years. When Cambridge Display Technologies puts the finishing touches on its light emitting polymer display monitors, every subway passenger in America will be subjected to the Subway TV Network, powered by CNN.
Insert wisecrack about Minority Report here.

Re:BBC --> US rebroadcasts?Yes, this 'deal' is known as BBC America. You csan receive BBC America in various parts of the USA via Sat Dish and some cable networks. The coverage is not widespread over the whole of the USA yet, although I know that you can receive it in Chicago, part of NY State, parts of California. Check the BBC American web site for more information.
The BBC usually rebroadcast a hand full of their current affairs, business and news programmes in Real Video/Audio format. BBC World Service is broadcast 24 hours a day in Streaming Quick Time 4 format.
Whilst I worked at the BBC, I found they didn't rebroadcast such specialist niche programmes in RealVideo format much, although the BBC Education site does have a wealth of multimedia material to view. Local Hero's being one brilliant example, also the Windrush Project.
Someone mentioned elsewhere about the BBC servers. Take it from me, it ain't a small operation
;-) Also, Beeb.com, the commercial wing of the BBC's online presence has outsources ALL it's servers to ICL. The set up is VAST.
