Re:Choice is a Good Thing
This being Slashdot and all, why didn't you link to this gallery? I'm sure your average
/. reader would have found this more exciting. -
Slashdot and US-ASCII
Did you ever wonder why Slashdot only supports 7-bit ASCII, i.e. no extended ASCII, Unicode or ISO-8859 characters?
Because Slashdot is a wholly American and Patriot website, that's why.
Think about it! Do you want Slashdot to become a forum for terrorists, where they can freely discuss plans for taking away our freedom and killing our brave soldiers through HORRIBLE ACTS OF TERRORISM in their own language and the heathen Arabic script? Unicode, a system that enables terrorists worldwide to plan terrorist actions and communicate through the Internet. Though most try to cover it up, it is no secret to most IT-savvy Americans that Unicode development is partly funded by Al-Qaeda and partly by the French, dictator-supporting government. Here's proof.
There is none of that anti-social trash here. Slashdot supports only AMERICAN, PATRIOTIC CHARACTERS. Eurotrash, look out, because you can't use your fucking umlauts and ~'s here. We saved your sorry asses in World War II -- the least you can do is show some fucking respect and use our alphabet. Slashdot does not support your anti-American characters. 7-bit ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is commonly known as US-ASCII. This speaks for itself. The one and only choice for PATRIOTIC AMERICANS is US-ASCII, the STANDARD CODE for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I'm proud to be an American, and I'm PROUD be a member of this patriotic, American Slashdot community. I am not going to let freedom-hating terrorists plot evil plans on an American-owned, FREE SPEECH website.
Do not believe the terrorist propaganda lies.
Boycott Unicode -- it is a tool of terrorism.
USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN US-ASCII AND THE TERRORISTS HAVE ALREADY WON. -
Re:yuck!
Why do you find me scary?
I look the way I do because I feel comfortable that way. Marketing research has proven that men looking more bear-like tend to be taken more seriously. I did not believe it at first, but you will find that it actually works!
But in all seriousness, I feel that my product could be quite benificial to /. readers. Many of you dream of developing that killer game. I am offering my expertise to you so you can learn how to do it. And believe me, it is not as easy as it looks.
Peace to all of you! -
Bearload Troll Discovered
As many of you may have seen, over the past few days Slashdot came under attack from an Anonymous Coward identifying himself as the Bearload Troll, who posted hidden links to gay pornography in numerous stories.

This was assumed to be the work of a troll group, but none have claimed responsibility, nor have any lone users been discoverd. Until now. The poster made the mistake of boasting on an anti-slashdot website, with a static IP. Nothing was thought of this at first, obviously. Except for a fluke. Windows , in a fit of the paranoia that plagues him, emailed the site to accuse them of carrying out a campaign of harassment against him. They were stunned when they realised Windows and the Bearload Troll had exactly the same IP.
It appears that Windows had snapped under the weight of his madness and had decided to revenge himself upon the world by linking the people of Slashdot to shock sites. This kind of behaviour cannot be allowed to continue. Please, if you have mod points, mod down Windows . With a little discipline, he can return to being a productive member of the community. I urge you not to be vindictive -

The poster made the mistake of boasting on an anti-slashdot website, with a static IP. Nothing was thought of this at first, obviously. Except for a fluke. Space Cowboy, in a fit of boredom caused by his ceaseless karma whoring had emailed the site boasting he was planning to troll Slashdot out of ennui. They were stunned when they realised Space Cowboy and the Bearload Troll had exactly the same IP.
It appears that Space Cowboy had felt bored with normal discussion and had decided to relvie this boredom by linking the people of Slashdot to shock sites. This kind of behaviour cannot be allowed to continue. Please, if you have mod points, mod down Space Cowboy. With a little discipline, he can return to being a productive member of the community. This is a GOOD thing
As John Kellogg argues so eloquently here, DVDs have gained too much attention solely for their possible resolution, and outside of game development, little attention has been paid to their storage capacity except as it relates to films

Stalking can be a big problem
One woman went through hell after a man on one of these sites started to stalk her. People have to realize that the security checks that we don't even notice in real life(eg safety in a crowd, the reading of body language) don't exist online.

Bill Gates building
Going by his previous efforts Harvard will presumably have to change the locks twice a week, paint it blue daily and rebuild it every six months

This is not, in itself, new
Kevin Warwick at the University of Reading has been working in this field for years, mainly with flight simulators. Considering this is a research project, and not a commercial or military one, I fail to see why this is news. Is it just another example of Americans plagiarising someone else's work and claiming it as their own?

This will work, sadly
As an anarchist, I often compare my beliefs with that of the open source movement. There's an intersting parallel that can be drawn - people have been brainwashed to the point where they see governments, like copyright, as part of a natural order. The greatest lesson OSS advocated can take from the left is that of it's failure in England relative to the BNP - they have soaring electoral success while the socialist opponents can only scream about Nazis. The public doesn't care. Just as the left must present a credible alternative to the working class, the Open Source movement must be for Linux acceptance rather than against Windows.
Don't whine about monopolies-create a viable open source music selling alternative, and then appeal to people's immediate self interest, not to their ethics. To compete with a business, you must act like one -
This is hugely misleading
This is scare journalism at it's finest. The solution is very simple-turn off the preview panel in Outlook. Both Slashdot and the article writers imply some huge new technological boost in virus authoring. I'm stunned by the hypocrisy of the abstract-this is essentially FUD, something which Linux users rightly complain about

Servers getting slow already

There's an interesting article on this
The author suggests that Western hostility to unfamiliar ideas will effectively prevent anything narrative driven from being a success outside the culture it is developed in(and Japan is a Westernised culture, before someone mentions it)
