Moot.it C&D
We're super big fans of C&Ds here and I would like to know what happened with your C&D to Moot.it. How did it come about and what was the resolution?

Re:How much is Google paying for these promotions?
Right, cause cheap/free VR certainly isn't of interest to the slashdot crowd.
Are you saying, VR pr0n is already available? Nope, not yet...
Seriously, though, it may be "of interest", but not so much interest, that it merits a mention every two weeks. Hardly news — neither for nerds nor for others.

Re:I think this is bullshit
His $1000 donation did not deny anyone anything, it did however assist an organization which could be seen to try to 'deny rights'... that group and it's side lost.
You know Prop 8 passed, right? Plunging thousands of gay and lesbian couples who had already married into years of legal limbo? Which was part of an ongoing movement to continue denying gay and lesbian couples legal recognition forever? And you're aware that that movement springs directly from millennia of unjustified prejudice and violent persecution that still lingers today, right? And that all of this deeply affects the lives of many Mozilla employees and Firefox developers? There's a larger context here, and none of that disappears just because a federal court throws out a law.
Eich had every right to be CEO of the foundation
Nobody has a right to a specific job. Especially a job that makes them the public face of an organization that relies on a large and diverse group of outside developers. Eich chose to be an oppressive bigot, and chooses not to apologize for it. That's his choice, but he doesn't get to dodge the consequences just because he's a good coder or manager.
The Mozilla Foundation board should have known better. This isn't a new criticism.

Re:Welcome back, Brendan
Actually, he should apologize to us for being anti-gay-marriage and donating to Prop 8.
No one should apologize for that garbage.

Re:The IT IN Crowd
From what I read, knowing someone who works at Google is a primary requirement for landing a job at Google. Seems dumb to me, but then Google will admit to doing dumb things with regards to hiring. They've admitted their entire interview process doesn't really work. But this is a place where top talent like Hugo Barra is forced out of the company, because Google's CEO started banging his girlfriend. Between this, and selling out to the NSA, I don't think I would want to work for Caligula anyway
:-/ This patent application is equal parts disgusting and unsurprising to me. -
Researchers Find New Mac Keylogging Trojan on Site
"Dockster is a recently discovered Mac-based malware program that functions as a keylogger, among other things. It’s also a trojan, which means it can hide on a host computer quietly recording every keystroke before it contacts a remote server for further instructions. Dockster is considered “low risk,” but it has been found embedded on gyalwarinpoche.com–a site dedicated to the Dalai Lama."

Polished?
Prof. Moglen is also one of the most polished speakers anywhere, on any topic, ever.
Except when he's straight up yelling at interviewers?

Alt media FTW
Motherboard has been following Foxconn for a while and they have a new report out today, which talks about the OTHER riots breaking out in China over the last 24 hours. But they have a whole cache of material pertaining to Foxconn over the past couple of years. I would also look to BetaBeat's story today and The Verge.

Re:Obviously a functional unit
However, the Surface tablet froze in the middle of the presentation.
Not only that, later on presenter was trying to show camera widget and it "only" took him 4 tries
:). I stopped watching after that. -
Re:Obviously a functional unit
While some here on slashdot debate who copied whom first, I think we can agree MS tried to copy Apple's style of product announcements but they missed some key details. When Apple announces a new product, the product is already being shipped from China to their stores. As such Apple has a launch date and pricing detailed. The only exception is probably the original iPhone but Apple explained the 6 month lead time was because Apple couldn't keep it a secret as they had to get FCC approval. But Apple did list price and an estimated quarter.
Because the product is pretty much ready, Apple can rehearse the entire presentation ad nauseum to make sure it works. At best MS had a working prototype of Surface. However, the Surface tablet froze in the middle of the presentation. It's an incident that anyone who had done a product demo dreads. The most glaring gaffe at an Apple announcement was when Jobs couldn't get the original iPhone to surf the web via wifi. The technician traced the problem to too many wifi users at once which isn't a big deal. I think MS timed the PR event to follow Apple as Apple had their WWDC a week earlier to try to steal the thunder of everyone talking about the new MacBook Pro Retina displays.

Re:Ridiculous, Impossible, Etc.
Yea, I mostly just didn't like the headline because it's wrong. But that's what I get for reading the f* bill! (BTW, go read it, it's shorter than the Slashdot blurb about it: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld=&bn=S06779&term=2011&Summary=Y&Text=Y)
And apparently one of the sponsors of the bill is pissed because someone was attacking him anonymously. ( http://betabeat.com/2012/05/new-york-lawmakers-surprised-at-blowback-over-proposed-anonymous-comment-ban/ ) That is exactly my point though. Killing things like YouTube or 4Chan is bad, and they won't die anyway, they will just never be anywhere near NY jurisdiction. So there this doesn't end up doing anything at all to help "save the children" in the end anyway. -
Re:Why do intelligent people (continue to) use FB?
1) You may not care about the privacy aspects if you're OK with everything going public anyway
2) Misuse of data: see above
3) time sink? You could say the same about /., yet here you are. FB is only as big a time sink as you let it.That said, I don't have an FB account, since I don't see many benefits for me and I don't want to litter.

Re:via Facebook only?
You do realize that every form of "participation" requires some action on the part of the citizen, don't you? "We should be allowed to send an email..." means you must have an email account. "We should be able to poke stuff into a web form..." means you must have Internet access AND a web browser. "We should be able to mail them a letter..." means you have to be able to afford a stamp and have the ability to write. Every means of participation inconveniences some citizens. Does that make all of those means of participation "fundamentally wrong"?
I believe the problem is that you are forced to use a single company, which can censor your posts or shut you off whenever they want. None of your examples have the same issue.
Yes, if facebook charged you money to participate, I'd agree that it was wrong to use facebook for this. Facebook is free. If you already have internet access, you can have facebook for nothing extra. Since the OP was talking about interacting in an internet environment to start with, then whether it is via facebook or email or web makes no significant difference. OTH, the phone company charges you money to call your Senator. Why is the phone company ok and facebook bad? Or do you think the fact that Senators have phones is "fundamentally wrong", too?
There are other costs besides monetary. By using Facebook, you're promoting a company that makes money off of spying on people (no, not only what they choose to put there about themselves). http://www.betabeat.com/2011/12/13/in-which-eben-moglen-like-legit-yells-at-me-for-being-on-facebook/
Get a free account under a dummy name. Use a throwaway email address. Don't be stupid and send friend requests to any real people who might out you. Don't post your real information. Don't use a real picture of yourself for your avatar. Do none of the things that would identify you. Do all of the things you would do for any other internet connection or app that would anonymize you. You get to participate, facebook gets nothing. What's your problem with that?
What you're suggesting is against their ToS, which might be a crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
Also, Facebook still gets benefit of being validated as a proper communication channel for constituents, therefore entrenching their position of control over everyone's communications. It's littering, as Mr. Moglen says.

Re:Horror stories?
> Honestly, that's all just hyperbole. There's nothing wrong with Facebook.
It's not what Facebook does with your data, it's that Facebook gives employers excuses to fire you, universities to expel you, etc, etc.
Ever gone to a pub *WHILE ON VACATION OVRSEAS* and bought some alcoholic beverages? A teacher has been fired for that http://www.gadailynews.com/news/61845-teacher-ashley-payne-fired-for-posting-picture-of-herself-holding-beer-on-facebook.html
For a whole lot more horror stories, do a Google search
http://www.google.com/search?q=g+fired+facebook+post
"About 53,100,000 results (0.10 seconds) ".And it's not just about angry rants and compromising photos
Ever indicated support for a politically liberal position? If your boss is a political conservative, they'll look for reasons to fire you. Ever indicated support for a politically conservative position? If your boss is a political liberal, they'll look for reasons to fire you. Your religion and sexual orientation are obvious targets. What about idiot "friends" who post racist remarks on your wall?Ever reached for your mouse and accidentally clicked "like" on a porn site... oops... that now shows up on your wall.
Ever applied for a loan, mortgage, or credit card? Your Facebook friends can screw up your credit rating. See http://www.pcworld.com/article/246511/how_facebook_can_hurt_your_credit_rating.html

Tradehill were the good guys
Tradehill was probably the best-run Bitcoin exchange. They didn't steal customer funds, like some of the other defunct Bitcoin services. They didn't go down much. They didn't have a monthly crisis like Mt. Gox. (formerly Magic, the Gathering Online Exchange. Really.) If Tradehill does in fact return all customer funds, at least they shut down honestly.
A basic problem with Bitcoin is that the ability to irrevocably transfer funds to anonymous parties is the scammer's dream. Bitcoin is thus a scammer magnet. Just about every known financial scam was replicated in the tiny Bitcoin world, from fake banks to fake stock exchanges to Ponzi schemes.
