Re:SCI
Oh I have played some of the AGS made games as well as others. Some AGS games that I liked in particular were the Trilby games (ie. 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, 6 Days A Sacrifice), Emily Enough, King's Quest Remake, King's Quest III Remake and Quest for Glory II Remake. One of my favourite free, non-AGS adventures games is Out of Order.
When it comes to adventure games, there probably aren't many that I wouldn't enjoy. Space Quest games, Leisure Suit Larry games, King's Quest games, Laura Bow games, Kyrandia games, Broken Sword games, Monkey Island games, Maniac Mansion games, TLJ games, Syberia games...you name it and I have probably completed it. Any new (to me) adventure is welcome whether it's commercial, free, professional or amateur.

Re:Open sourceIn the name of spurring on independent production, are there any programs out there like SEUCK (Shoot'em'up construction kit) that average joe's can use to create games?
Adventure Game Studio has been around forever. It's the toolkit used to build Maniac Mansion Deluxe.
The problem isn't the lack of programming tools - free or otherwise. The problem lies in assembling and supporting all the other talent you need: Story. Production design. Set Design. Characters and Props. Art and animation. Music. Dialog and Vocal Performance.
The generic game engine may be all you need to animate the underworlds of Grim Fandango or Bioshock.
But first they have to imagined, populated and given direction.

Maniac Mansion DeluxeTry Adventure Game Studio. It's perfectly able and there are many great games that have been created with it.
.None better perhaps than the LucasFan remake Maniac Mansion Deluxe
The problem as always is not in finding the "perfect" game engine but in assembling the talent needed to develop the game as a whole: story, dialog, art and animation, music and effects.

Maniac Mansion Deluxe
The fan remake Maniac Mansion Deluxe may be of interest to the Maniac Mansion fans here. Looks mostly like the PC version, but with more colourful graphics (partially influenced by the sequel, Day of the Tentacle) and added sound and music.

No brainer
Adventure games never really died. They just got lost in the massive push toward All Things 3D(TM). I'm happy to see that companies are starting to understand that these games are still popular, in the same way that RPGs are still popular both in 2D and 3D.
Translated to Marketeeringese: Good Adventure Games = $$$Ka Ching!$$$
While you're waiting, consider playing a little Stargate Adventure. It's short, but it will take you back. :) -
Re:Adventure Genre
Too bad LucasArts axed it initially, along with the Full Throttle sequel.

Re:I GUESS it's possible...
Considering that the internet has existed as a distribution method for adventure games for...oh, over a decade now and that there hasn't been a huge resurgence, I've got my doubts here.
There hasn't?I'm not sure what it'll take to revive the genre, but we haven't hit on it yet.
How about a nice letter to SciFi Channel Productions saying that we love this game and we want an official one created just like it? Preferrably with the humor intact, and without all the Three-Dee crud all the game companies try to shove down our throats. Far too many attempts at reviving the genre tend to throw away the very elements that made it entertaining to begin with. -
