Parsimony...
Really, folks - which is a simpler explanation for these graphs:
Violent crime rate
Video game sales
That (presumeably violent) video game use correlates with a massive secret drive towards violence, that is somehow counterbalanced in the overall violent crime rate, or that this (now) extremely common form of entertainment is at worst, on average, a similar factor in people's lives as movies or books?
True, the ever-shifting and politically influenced definition of violent crime may have shifted definition over the years too, but I highly doubt any theories on that line would be able to mask the accusations Thomson makes about the use of video games in society.
In order to match Thomson's account to reality in any way, you'd have to start making up any number of wild inventions to force the facts into place... kind of like what he's doing here.

Google index hacked?
Hacking of Google databases might explain why Google Translator used to translate the Russian name for "Ivan the Terrible" as "Abraham Lincoln".

Proof
I tried submitting this to Slashdot but it wasn't accepted. It did get picked up on the InsideGoogle blog. They have some photos and discussion.

Re:It's a good thing
The loser here are news sites that do run wire service stories as they will no longer be getting free traffic from Gnews. This might encourage them to be more original.
Yeah. I hear the The North Platte Bulletin has an opening for a Beijing bureau chief.
Wire services exist because it is impossible for every news outlet to cover every story. Hell, given the buisness situation in the newspaper industry, even the major papers are drawing down their national and international coverage and relying more on wire services. I'm specifically thinking the LA Times' recent hyperlocal direction.
The idea that somehow that newspapers sites were getting reliable significant "free traffic" from google news is absurd. gnews's site selection algorithm is essentially random. We've all seen examples where gnews would highlight some white supremacist news site. (Yes, Google has since blacklisted that site from gnews.) It's no secret who the top sites featured on gnews are, its the old standbys. In all actuality, having gnews highllight some small newspaper could actually cause more problems for the paper, when their site is inevitably slashdotted, or gnewsed as the case may be. -

Avoid CLick through
Real story
no ads.
This isn't an anti-piracy measure, Microsoft is actually pretty upset about it. They don't like easter eggs because it makes them look unprofessional. If they find the guys that did this, they will probably be fired. -
Re:Console games. Console!
I salute Valve for talking about this and hope they follow through with it. It's a shame companies like Microsoft insist that "content have value" and heavily pressure production studios to charge for content that has been classically free for PC games. Why should four multiplayer maps cost ten dollars when companies like Epic have given away expansion-sized updates for their Unreal Tournament games? I can't understand how value-added content is such a bad thing when you're already shelling out $60 for a game.

Yeah right...
Those cheap skates won't part with a dime... I'll believe it when I see it. Sure they might do it for a week or so, then they'll drop it all the sudden once they have acquired everyone's email address and marketing info. Do not forget.

Re:yes and no
Yes: Dell is and has been shipping this for a while now.
Rumor has it that Dell makes up to $1.75 for each machine shipped with the Google package. InsideGoogle
It's been out long enough to develop a De-Crapifier
And of course, Dell's own Technical Support Document FA1094103 - "Where can I find assistance for my Google Toolbar and Google Desktop?
NO: Dell is shipping 'clean' gaming systems
Slashdot
Dell has been offering customers who want to develop their own disk image the ImageBuilder and X-Image programs.
Anyone using the imaging process, or having another existing contract doesn't get the extra garbage.
This makes it really inconvenient, considering that Dell's Image Restore is kinda neat for tech support. Just have users restart and press a couple keys - 10 minutes later you have OOBE back again. Unfortunately, out-of-box includes all this crap again. I'd still like a disk for when I replace the HDD, but this has potential to save a lot of time.
It looks to me like Dell is padding the machines at the low end with a more pennies of profit. -
Re:Mythical man money?
it seems if I'm not mistaken, a lot of the great things that have come out of google have been through aquisitions of start ups with great ideas and developers.
and I'm pretty certain that is what microsoft used to be.
Neither company has shown much innvoation that is completely internal. Maybe its just bill is getting old and not seeing those aquisition opportunities as early as the young guys are?

Re:Panty Bind
>How about third party predictions?
Umm.... its alot more complex than that.
>Yes, they are just not saying what their revenue is going to be in the future, they left that black art to the market analysts and financial planners.
Google doesn't predict revenue?
http://google.blognewschannel.com/index.php/archiv es/2006/03/08/google-accidentally-reveals-revenue- prediction/
Our ads business... projected to grow from $6bn this year to $9.5bn next year based purely on trends in traffic and monetization growth.
And also the comments from the CFO regarding future growth that Google had to "clarify" afterwards. -
It's not the first time.

Library of Alexandria^2Think about this plus the Google wifi effort.
Imagine being able to access to full text of any book anywhere. The possibilities are tremendous. We'll have to figure out a way to deal with copyright (or whatever we come up with), so that great work is still produced, but it will be tremendous.
Though I'm a bit concerned about the tainting of Google's business by political bias, and by silencing outlets who don't kowtow to their demands.

Like the Google Search / Maps killers?
These news quickly turned into these news.
These news quickly turned into these news.
MS Plan:
1. Suffix a well-known product with the word "killer".
2. Hold a press conference of your product.
3. Release a pale version of the suffixed product above.
4. ???
5. Profit!! -
Re:highly editorialized? There has been accusations of bias on both sides, for example here they claim Google shows a tendancy towards conservative bias, http://www.ojr.org/ojr/technology/1095977436.php
This one claims liberal bias, http://google.blognewschannel.com/index.php/archi
v es/2005/05/04/google-accused-of-liberal-bias/The truth is that Google news simply shows results that are more left and right instead of just stuff in the middle. I like to see this approach more than a homogenized result. http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050520-132
5 05As far as staple feeds showing bias, well you can do an RSS search (called "Create a Section" on the bottom left) an add anything you like to your news feeds such as Fox News or whatever you care for such as a specific conservative blog. It's actually quite easy and simple to use. It avoids having to use a seperate RSS reader and removes some of the technical intimidation that RSS offers an average user. Just for grins I tried Shacknews.com and instapundit.com, both feeds worked like a charm.

Re:What I find hilariousCNN mentions the guy who got fired from google for blogging.
What they don't mention is that the guy who got fired from google for blogging seems to have been violating SEC regulations by publicly posting certain information relating to Google's financials...
The "information relating to Google's financials" was, and I quote:
they started off the day with a financials presentation, which was actually quite interesting. of course, i understand that they obviously will put a positive spin on everything, but the weight of the raw numbers is undeniable. both google's profits and revenue are growing at an unprecedented rate even while they are increasing their expenditures on capital and human resources. not to mention that google has been primarily focused on the u.s. market and is now turning their full attention to the global marketplace.
so after the interesting financials, the products team gave presentations reviewing product performance in 2004 and giving sneak peeks of the products we'll unveil in 2005. if you guys thought gmail and google groups were cool, you ain't seen nothing yet!
Some people believe that he was fired for criticizing Google's compensation and benifits package, and otherwise not being a "team player." -
Why Doesn't Slashdot Give Credit?
Once again, Slashdot gives no credit to whoever actually did all the research, or if the anonymous poster actually did it, which blog told him about the site. Quite a respectable news organization you've got here, what with anonymous users posting plagiarized research and non-credited links. So, who did he not credit?
