Re:There is no engineering.
Yep, but this is just a technicality of the "Industrial Exemption" that corporations lobbied for a few decades ago on the basis that states oughtn't license engineers involved with interstate commerce:
http://engineeringethicsblog.b...In any case, "engineers" are engineers by any definition of the word. But...
* engineers doing safety-of-life critical work should be licensed, or at least have their work reviewed by a licensed engineer. Otherwise the administration is liable. If there's one thing administration is competent at, it's legally assigning blame to someone else.
* the engineering work I've performed for big engineering firms seldom used anything I learned from getting a BS and MS from engineering school. So SW Engineering jobs are not unique in not caring much about engineering practices, it's like that in the rest of the engineering industry too. They do care about how well you communicate with the rest of the devs, hence questions focus on how much language you have in common with their understanding of their favorite brogramming language du jour.
* in the SW Dev world, the engineering skills that the poster is talking about -- process management, optimization, change management, requirements definition and management, lifecycle management, verification and validation, etc. are all lumped under "management". So you might say that your engineering experience gives you "management" ability... just be careful to specify "project management" rather than "people management" or else they'll lump you into one of those management roles where you have to review everyone's performance evaluations every year and fight for budget and all of that other useless backstabbing stuff for no additional pay because they think you get off enough by playing the sociopathic power struggle game.

Re:What it means:
Find even one post of mine that has insults in it
:-) I dare you.Again with the reading and comprehension problems.
Anyway on to your other point. I can point at all sorts of examples of sexism all over the place. This is not hard.
Here's some more examples full of citations:
http://skepchick.org/2013/02/p...
Still not CS. Personally, I don't beliee CS is special and somehow immune from basic human bigorty. You also have no evidence of its specialness, and claiming specialness as you do is not some null hypothesis that you get for free.
And then there's all the personal anecdotes one hears from actual people in the field. There's the stuff I've personally witnessed at CS conferences directed at women that I've never seen directed at men.
There's also the fact that women are more likely to be victims of sexism than men simply by virtue of there being fewer of them.
http://iangent.blogspot.com/20...
So, it adds up. The last one for me is particularly convincing because it doesn't require any conspiracy, nor does it require men to be systematically more bigoted than women. All it requires is the existence of sexism in either direction and a difference in numbers.
So there you go. If you think CS is immune from the effect of maths and immune from basic human bigotry, then go ahead and think that. But be aware you're making a very strong assumption with no evidence at all.

Re:A new gig for him
Eh, I think people are too quick to judge. I don't know anyone who doesn't misremember things, especially under stress. It's when it's "I don't remember anything about that," that it becomes suspicious. Memories and fantasies (or thoughts about memories -- "what if it had happened this way?") easily become intertwined, to the point where eyewitness testimony is really the *least* reliable piece of evidence. And it's not because people are trying to lie; it's because they're not good at remembering the truth.
Watch the "Remember This!" episode of Brain Games if you can. Commentary here.

Re:My FreeBSD Report: Four Months In
Yes, ZFS is amazing. But my concern about FreeBSD in general is that from an exploit mitigation perspective, it's in the dark ages. Like, maybe close to Windows XP. http://networkfilter.blogspot....
For a file server, great. But for anything that's parsing untrusted data or is exposed to the internet, I'd be concerned.

he's not alone
The Wikipedia Typo Team has a lot of people who "adopt" particular misspellings by periodically searching for them and fixing them. I've been doing it since 2006 and I'm a little short of 100,000 edits. Of course I am not quite so fixated as Giraffedata - I also work on other projects, collect interesting vandalism, and create the occasional article.
There's plenty of room to contribute in small ways. People who mainly do things like this are referred to as WikiGnomes.

Re:The real disaster
But unfortunately, all those are all estimations based on a model that was never validated. There is a good summary here.
http://nuclearradiophobia.blog...
The conservative LNT model works OK for risk management, but it is known to be inaccurate for risk assessment. There just has been no real impetus to develop an accurate model adn it is quite a difficulat thing to accomplish as the real rates of negative health impact are so low they have a hard time getting a statistical basis, and the conservative model served the purpose when it comes to exposure guidelines. But when that is used to spread fear, there is a need for better assessment.
Folks that understand this are not at all surprised when there are stories of teh many people living in the Chernobyl region that are perfectly fine, or that statistical real world evidence of actual cancer cases attributable to CT scans is non-existent. Not in line with any of the so called 'predictions' based on the old model. -
Re: The real disaster
some areas were a lot more radioactive too, see this gamma camera image of the vent stack. I'm thinking that with your knowledge of radioactive safety you'd think twice about spending your lunch break there. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L0be...

Re:The real disaster
The proposal was to make containment of radioactive material and avoiding off-site contamination in an accident a legally binding agreement
http://www-ns.iaea.org/downloa... (bottom of page 15)The actual wording includes the term 'shall', which in a regulatory sense is a pretty absolute statement, it ends with the statement, "these objectives also shall be applied at existing plants"
So, any nuclear operator in the planet would be out of legal compliance if they have any existing nuclear plant that 'may' present a risk of losing containment... Yeah, that would cost a shit-ton of money for the industry to just tread water and would greatly INCREASE the dependence of coal energy in the short to mid term
Everybody seems to ignore that coal also releases Uranium into the atmosphere due to fly ash, this author estimates that annual release to be 1.069 PBq/yr
http://nuclearaustralia.blogsp...This is far beyond estimates that "40 trillion becquerels released into Pacific ocean" had escaped from Fukushima
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ti...Where is the shouting for coal to clean up its act?
Nuclear has become the whipping boy for the Green political party and Greenpeace, who in turn seem to be operating well in favor of the coal industry over the interests of the general population -

Re:Umm..and telnet is insecure.
Qubes handles video playback just fine even at FHD (although within a frame, to show security context).
The MS Office website says Excel requires DirectX "for acceleration". IOW, it runs without acceleration if DirectX hardware is not available. Its not something I really notice, given that Excel mainly deals with text on a grid.
If you really need 3D, Qubes can handle it as long as you supply an additional GPU that behaves well with an IOMMU, such as an Nvidia Quadro. Otherwise, you have to wait for ITL to incorporate GPU virtualization into the Qubes codebase... but virtual GPU tech has only been demonstrated by GPU vendors very recently.
Granted, 3D is an important feature in PCs today, but the inability to
/safely/ incorporate it thus far highlights the kind of negligence that has held sway in the computer industry. You'll have more luck 3D-wise with a Hyper-V server combined with Windows new RemoteFX technology. I know that this is unpopular option, and if anyone can set me straight on hypervisors and 3D for Windows guests not running on Windows hypervisors, please do. I've researched KVM, LXD, Jailhouse, or ESX, and of those, only ESX has experimental Windows 3D guest support.
Most hypervisors are designed for the convenience of users and sysadmins to either run another OS, or better manage server resources... Securing desktop PC features is secondary at best with them.

Re:They already have
Whether 2014 is the warmest in the instrument record or not is beside the point. The continued warming is unequivocal. The only reason that a "hiatus" can be claimed by some is because 1998 was such an extreme outlier year.
Tamino over at Open Mind did a graph of the linear temperature trend since 1970 against the year to year variability. 2014 is right on the linear temperature trend line which shows temperatures are increasing without evidence of the increases slowing down. It's just year to year variability that gives you an excuse to think it isn't.
Another way to look at it is to take 10 year slices rather than year to year. That's more of a climate centric view than a year to year weather centric view. Here is a bar graph of warming anomalies in decadal slices since the start of the instrument record. Below is a text table of the results for those who don't want to click the link:
GISTemp Decadal Global Surface Temperature
(Anomaly from 1950-1981 mean)Decade_______Anomaly
1884-1893_____-0.26
1894-1903_____-0.25
1904-1913_____-0.40
1914-1923_____-0.28
1924-1933_____-0.17
1934-1943_____+0.00
1944-1953_____-0.03
1954-1963_____-0.02
1964-1973_____-0.02
1974-1983_____+0.10
1984-1993_____+0.24
1994-2003_____+0.46
2004-2014_____+0.59It's easy to take a short period and make arguments about it but when you look at it in a way that filters out the short term noise like year to year variability the picture becomes much clearer.

What Snappy and Core really are
Core is a lightweight version of Ubuntu, intended so you can build it on small systems like cloud VMs or ARM boards or embedded devices. (That's an Ubuntu-ish use of "lightweight", which seems to be "of course you've got a huge disk drive even though you don't have much RAM or CPU, but I haven't yet loaded all the pieces to find what it takes to get a minimally useful system. It ain't Puppy Linux, but it's at least a JeOS replacement.)
Snappy is a package manager. It's designed for doing transactional updates to apps and frameworks, so you can load things that you really want to either succeed completely or else fail completely and clean up after themselves, without getting into trouble like dependencies or having to wait until the next semi-yearly Ubuntu release to have all their pieces. It's a replacement for apt/yum/ports/etc.
Snappy Ubuntu Core is an implementation of Core with a Snappy package manager on top of it. You'd typically load a framework like Docker on top of that, but you don't have to if your apps don't need it (or if you just don't have room.) Almost all the "Snappy Ubuntu Core" articles, including at Ubuntu.com, are mostly about Snappy package management, not actually about Core. Sigh.

Re:I agree with Lennart
And that seems to be one of the big differences between people who like systemd and people who don't. People who actually took the time to look at systemd more often like the design, and understand that the one project consists of many small tools.
If you are actually looking for counterpoints to that idea, this guy both understands that, and disagrees suggesting that although systemd is modular, it is still monolithic.
-
Re:Just keep it away from Gentoo and I'm good
Basically, it's not factually incorrect, but very misleading. Sure, they are separate components but they are so tightly coupled you can't really have one without theother so they operate in the same way as a monolithic system despite being split up into multiple components. Facllacy #1 explains it much better than I could here.

Central control means nothing. X10 is completely insecure. Your power line is a shared bus. I had to coordinate with my neighbor to use different X10 channels, because we kept turning each other's stuff on and off. Anyone can just plug in a controller, and every X10 house downstream of the step down transformer will see the signals and respond. At one point I had a sniffer/sweeper running to debug the damn problem and that's when I got my neighbor's attention cause his house went bonkers when I swept the A channel. He moved to B and all was well after that. But still very insecure. Free download full version software&game click to this link: http://softwarescollectionawes...

Re:does not sound like closure to me
Re-read the summary. They know what is causing the lockup, they don't know what is making the system call which is triggering the bug. Once you know what is causing the lockup it can be fixed, and the hack that was written made the lock-ups stop. At no point did anyone throw out or try new hardware, though one thought is everything is originating from a hardware bug.
