Re:DonationThere's a similar law in Canada. From the Canadian Blood Services websites:
Possible Exposure to CJD or vCJD: People are not eligible to donate blood or plasma if they have spent a cumulative total of three months or more in the United Kingdom (U.K.) between January 1980, and December 31, 1996, or if they have spent a cumulative total of three months or more in France between January 1980, and December 31, 1996, or if they have spent a cumulative total of five years or more in Western Europe outside the U.K. or France since 1980. In addition, people will no longer be eligible to donate blood or plasma if they have had a blood transfusion in the U.K., France or Western Europe since 1980. This is owing to the risk of transmission of variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD) through blood.
I'm a first generation Canadian of British descent, so when I was younger, my parents took me to Britain many times to visit relatives -- I suspect that I've been there for at least 3 months in total, so I guess I'm banned from donating blood too.

Aggregated News on US Attacks and BLOOD DONATIONS
When so many news sites were going down yesterday we set up an aggregated news feed on the US attacks at our site. It's the top item on the main page.PLEASE DONATE BLOOD! There is a continent-wide blood drive on. New York hospitals are critically low on blood supplies and many of the wounded are being transported to Canadian hospitals Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa to make space for the expected flood of critical patients in New York.
You can contact the US Red Cross or Canadian Blood Services to set up an appointment.

Damn Canada and it's restrictions
I live in Ontario, which of course shares a border with NY state. I can't give blood normally, and today is no exception (I called and emailed them (http://www.bloodservices.ca/home.html)).
It's because I'm British. Anybody who has spent more than 3 mos in the UK since 1980 cannot give blood due to fears of vCJD. I also know for a fact that the US doesn't have such restrictions as I gave blood 2 years ago whilst living in Colorado.
Oh well, I shall have to think of some other way of helping. -
Re:Giving Blood Wherever you live!
People, give blood wherever you live, regardless of whether it's in California or in Rhode Island!
Or even Canada. Canadian Blood Services tells me they're helping out the States. Go to www.bloodservices.ca or phone 1-888-2-DONATE to learn how you can give blood. Innocent people need your help to survive.

It doesn't matter if Napster is helping CD sales
"And since the record industry sold more CDs then ever last year, that of course proves what all these lawsuits are about *cough*."
How long will that last?? Once affordable technology catches up, CD sales are going to be huuuurting.
Even if Napster is helping CD sales (which I think it is) by people using it to sample music that they will then purchase, that'll only last so long.
The only reason I've seen this is that I personally have bought a total of 2 CDs this year because of the fact that I have a Personal Jukebox.
I think that the RIAA is being very smart in being afraid of Napster (and clones).
Napster may not be a bullet to the brain, but it's definately an infectuous disease of some sort.
