Cheaper solutions are available
I currently use Hotmail Popper (http://www.boolean.ca/hotpop/ - $17.50) with Mozilla Thunderbird...not only does it work like a charm, but it's also, well, not Outlook.
However, I do see that Hotmail might try to cockblock my Hotmail Popper access...hopefully alternative solutions will popup to allow me to circumvent this. -
Re:seriously
The search is nice, and it's much faster than searching my local hard drive. The "folders" concept is good, but it doesn't work right. The ads are rather non-intrusive, but POP/IMAP would be better. The autothreading is good in concept, but it doesn't work right all the time.
In the end, the space is the reason I use gmail as my main email account. If hotmail ever upgrades my account to 250 megs I'll probably switch back to them, because at least I can access it using outlook express and hotmail popper. Alternatively, maybe gmail will fix the problems I'm experiencing. It is beta, after all.

It won't, and here's why...
People could still just use Hotmail Popper and any POP3 email client (even non-Microsoft ones... Oh, the humanity!) to access their account, and even send messages through it.

Hotmail Popper
Hopefully Hotmail Popper will still work. Hotmail Popper is a small application that allows you to check your Hotmail account e-mail from a normal POP mail client (such as Eudora, IncrediMail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Netscape, etc). Unlike standard mail accounts which allow users to retrieve their e-mail through a POP mail client, Hotmail can normally only be checked on the web. With Hotmail Popper, you can use your favorite POP mail client to retrieve your e-mail from your Hotmail account. In addition, Hotmail Popper allows you to send e-mails through Hotmail's service, as if it was a normal SMTP (outgoing mail) server.

Re:Time for Yahoo Pops and Thunderbird
In case you aren't aware, there is a project similiar to YahooPOPs for Hotmail, called Hotmail Popper.

Alternatives:Really, I haven't taken my time to see if any of these below is different. However, there are other ways to access a Hotmail account from an email client.
hotpop (shareware, for Windows. Still working here at my office);
Gotmail. Free as in everything, for Linux.
There are some more, I just can't pull them off my mind right now. -
Re:Well it is not all about spaceNot sure what you mean about only working on 1 computer. Or "not security conscious" for that matter. I think the benefits are obvious. You can actually get a copy of your email on your computer without using copy/paste. You can change your from address. Filters are much more powerful and actually work. Now that they give 250 megs of space, I see no reason *not* to use hotmail and OE. Other than the fact that it's a Microsoft product, I guess.
And if you really hate OE, there's always hotmail popper, which lets you use any POP email client.

Re:Just goes to show you ....
Hotmail Popper lets you use your favourite email program with hotmail, works fine with Thunderbird.

Here's my list
(aside from windows updates and drivers)
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
Hotmail popper
iTunes
Nero burning ROM
WinRAR
ACDSee (image processing)
Photoshop
Cute FTP
Forte Agent (Usenet client)
And then come the games ;p -
Re:Very Real
The reason why Hotmail doesn't support POP3, I believe, is that if you can access your account in a mail-client, then you don't see any ads. In comes Hotmail popper
Therefore I think it would be reasonable for Google to expect a small fee in exchange for POP3 access .
I have 2 questions though,
1. do you think it would be possible to write an extension to, say OE and Thunderbird, so that these "relevant ads" would be displayed somewhere in the program window?
2. How long will it take for someone to write a program like hotmail popper so that people can access their Gmail accounts via Thunderbird and other email clients? -
Re:YahooPOPs! -- I'm LOVIN' it !!!
>There are also other similar programs out there for MSN, Lycos, etc.
I use hotmail popper to get hotmail POP access, something that you can't even buy.
It recently went from freeware to pay-ware. You might be able to find an older version somewhere. -
Don't use Hotmail via the web, then.
I hadn't even realized they did this crap, because I use Hotmail Popper. I check my Hotmail account via POP, and have it transfer to main account in Mozilla Mail. Rather than repeat it, I'll just throw in the link to my comment about Hotmail Popper and Yahoo! POPs.

What about Hotmail?
What is keeping me from using Mozilla full time is that it can't download my Hotmail e-mails the way that Outlook can. I know you can get around that with things like Hotmail Popper. But it just isn't the same...

Thunderbird is great OE replacement + Hotmail Xcng
I was lazy and used Outlook Express for email, plus an old Hotmail account hanging around. After working with Firebird betas for awhile I gave Thunderbird a try and have used it ever since, even tapping into my Hotmail with the free and excellent Hotmail Popper. Unfortunately only for Windows, but still and excellent companion to Thunderbird. (Also works with any POP email client) And thankfully once Hotpop downloads the msgs the TBird spam filter goes into effect.

Hotmail support
Thunderbird is a marvelous replacement for Outlook [Express]
Unlike Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook Express can fetch mail from MSN Hotmail accounts. However, several POP proxies that access Hotmail exist. Is the installation of Hotmail Popper easy enough to recommend it to former Outlook Express users?

Easy POP access to Yahoo and Hotmail. If you want POP access to Yahoo! mail, you could always use Yahoo! POPs. It allows you POP access to download your mail directly to whichever client you use (with some exceptions, of course), and to send outbound mail from the same account. I don't use Yahoo! mail, but I do use Hotmail, and Hotmail Popper works wonders for me. I just set up an additional account in Mozilla Mail, set the server address to 127.0.0.1 (obviously, the address is completely user-configurable), and have it, once it downloads the mail from the server, move it into my main account, using the Moz's bayesian filtering along the way. The only downside to these is that you can't run them through your local SpamAssassin, though maybe you can, since I haven't really tried hard enough, and besides, you're still getting your messages straight off the server and opening up space on your account, something you couldn't do before.
I heartily recommend both of these, Hotmail Popper from personal experience, and Yahoo POPs from others'.

Re:What about my hotmail?
There's also Hotmail Popper, though that isn't open source.
