Re:This is why we can't have nice things
Which of the 5 mentioned in the report was that? And do you really think a 2.25kg drone will do any less damage when 2.25kg ducks, which are much softer, have been known to take down planes?
Was your point really "well, it hasn't happened in Austrailia, so it must not be a big deal"? And 5lb is still quite small for a drone capable of stable flight at altitudes over 100 feet or so; 20lb (that is, ~10kg) drones fare much better than their lighter "toy" counterparts at higher altitudes where there are likely to be stronger winds. You'd me amazed what a difference 10 feet or 1lb can make in a craft's ability to maintain stable flight.
Or are you trying to say a 10kg drone won't do the same damage as a 10kg model plane? I mean, it's either that or a 2.5kg drone will do less damage than a 2.5kg duck; and I'm pretty sure both hypothesis are wrong.
Or do you think all drones weigh under 1lb like the shit they sell at Brookstone or your local drug store? Buddy, there are some absolutely massive hobbyist drones out there. This one is almost 23kg, and it took me 30 seconds to find it on Google. Something like that could fly at or above 400ft with ease and pose a very real threat to manned aircraft; something like this, not so much on either front. -
Re:Vaporware?
Ok, so the butane cartridges are available, but the pre-order page isn't up yet at the main site (despite promising to be up over a month ago) and I see nothing on the other link about the actual device to plug the butane cartridges into to convert the butane to electricity.
Oddly, the fuel cartridges are listed as 'in stock,' shipping in May...
Price is $20, for what amounts to less than 2 ounces of butane. In contrast, ~5 ounce can of Ronson butane is about $5 at Walgreens.
Don't think it takes a math major to see what a screwjob this is.

Re:Prediction:
and we still lack the capability to punch someone over TCP/IP...
Of course we can. The USB Missle Launcher works over WMS or Skype. It qualifies for a sufficiently loose definition of 'punch'.

Brookstone Earpods
I also hate earbuds, I find them uncomfortable and they never seem to stay put in my ears.
BUT, I also want something really portable... I picked up these Brookstone Earpods a couple years back and they're great... very good sound quality and very comfortable... I can even wear them lying down with my ear against a pillow, they're so flat. $59.99, hopefully close enough to your price range.

Re:Too pricey.
I recently spent $50 at Brookstone for a very nice leather case for my iPhone which contains an amazing secret... a charger. I love the thing. I charge it via mini-USB, and when I need an extra charge for my phone I flip it on. It's not much heavier than most nice leather cases, provides reasonable protection and more than doubles battery life in a pinch. This is the 3G/3GS version, and there's another for the 4. Be sure to get the right one, the shapes are different enough that they're not interchangeable.

Re:Use cases?
It's pricey, but Brookstone sells a nifty iPad case with a built in flexible Bluetooth keyboard. You unfold the case one way and the keyboard is tucked out of sight behind the device and it just acts like "normal" iPad case, unfold it another way and the device is set vertical (or near vertical) like a screen and the keyboard is in front of it like a laptop. I don't have an iPad so I didn't play with it enough to really judge the usability, but the concept at least seems pretty reasonable.
Linky I saw one while wandering through the Airport Brookstones in Baltimore on a layover.

Re:Money clip
OWWWW! It's made of metal. There are leather money clips that are similar and work the same way. One of them is at http://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?produc

Use luggage locks TSA can open
There are luggage locks sold to which TSA already has the master keys. That way you can keep 'em locked, but the TSA can rifle through your wife's lingerie and sex toys as much as they want, take some joke pictures wearing/using them, then lock up your luggage afterwards.

Re:Crank Alternative
They also have those flashlights that work by shaking them.
I imagine it might make for a slightly larger cell phone, and I don't know how long the charge lasts... (the flashlight above says if you shake it for 30 seconds you get 5 minutes of light, so that might make for a long shake if you're planning on talking for very long) but this could be another option for those that are used to rapidly moving their arm up and down.

How about no pad at all?
I carry around this mini mouse for my laptop... It's so small it really takes no space, plus, it's optical, so it works correctly on any surface.

I'm not going to buy it.
I'll just save the money and stick with my handy warming plate that I set my coffee cup on. It doens't keep my coffee piping hot like it says but its warm enought to be tasty...

Brookstone flat speakers
While we are waiting for the site to become unslashdotted, or the next story, I have a question. Has anyone here seen/bought one of those NXT flat panel systems at Brookstone? They have a clear (Acousticlear) CD player, and a home theatre 5.1 CD/DVD player. They sound great in the sore. Before I fork over $475 or $500 i wanted to get other opinions.

It occurs to me...
that this sort of thing would go well with that overpriced glowing monitor globe you can buy.
Infoglobe
Or at least a homemade version of it. -
rep the strap

Re:And the price for one of these is?You can buy them through Brookstone. Here's the link to the Ms. Pac/Galaga cabaret.
Everyone who's into these things, keep asking locations about them. This is a shameless plug, as I work for the company that did Ms.Pac/Galaga and Centipede/Millipede/Missile Command/Let's Go Bowling.

Re:Exercise bike built into executive chairI haven't seen the chair/bike you mentioned, but I have seen something similar (and probably cheaper).
How about something like this or this?
I actually tried these out at the local Brookstone. I found that the pedals kept scooting away from me, but that could be easily fixed...
I'm sure other companies offer something similar and cheaper than Brookstone. (I just happened to have seen them this last week and knew I could find a good link.)

Found what you want...
1) These are available from Brookstone for $150...
2) Delcom Engineering has a "USB Visual Signal Indicator". This includes RED, GREEN, and BLUE LEDs, Piezo buzzer, 2 meter USB cable and USB powered circuit. The cost? $69.00 each... All you need to add is a globe...
If you want to play around with this stuff, Delcom Engineering also makes USB chips, cables, etc. and they make USB development board for $49.00 that you could you could use to build what ever you wish...

Re:from Dave @ Forever Bright
I ordered a bunch of the white mini LED
lights from Brookstone. However,
once I got them I had to return them
because the wife said that the look
too blue. This is true, the white LED
lights do look blue-ish, especially when
compared to the yellow-biased conventional
bulbs. Other than the color, the product
appeared very satisfactory. -

Maxim subscriber letter from the near futureDear Maxim dudes:
As a member of Generation X, I was stoked to see that wearable computers are now available ("Hey Gen-Xers: Wearable Stuff!", Maxim, March 2002). ThinkGeek would have taken two days to deliver, so I hopped in my X-Terra and cruised down to Brookstone with my S.O. (she wanted to check out the genital jewelry).
That night while I was fisting her ("How to fist anyone!", Maxim, July 2001) our nipple ring walkie-talkies touched each other briefly, long enough to send an arc through all of our body piercings (I have 13, she has 22). Bummer! My roommates wanted to know what all the commotion was, so we told 'em someone got eaten by a croc on Survivor ("Lie--it's okay!", Maxim, January 2001). Yeah. Anyway we now have to get the burn marks taken out of our tribal tats, get some piercings redone, buy a new snowboard (bummer!), and replace the American flag that got burnt when my girl exploded--gotta support the troops so we don't have to start speaking Afghani! Although I would like to smoke some Afghani right about now...Huh huh.
Just want to remind all my peeps to play it safe when your fisting your girl, and don't forget to vote
