sorry for the blatant shill...
sorry, but i see a lot of people asking where DO you get cheap HDMI cables. Personally, I've used http://www.cablesforless.com/Default.aspx for several years. I just get the cheapest HDMI cables they offer and they've worked fine. I can tell no difference between them and the pair of ridiculously expensive cables I was conned into when i got my first HDMI TV and devices. As a side benefit, they have lots of other hard to find cables and connectors and can custom make cables to your specs.
anyway. it's a good place to start if you're looking to save money on cables. -

Re:no common sense case
I guess you need to shop elsewhere for your cables. Cables For Less has HDMI Cables for $12 (3 foot) and $16 (6 foot). Just because the big retailers charge tons for cables, doesn't mean you have to pay those prices.

Re:Fryes Do it Yourself Project30 meters of multimode (good to 2km) is can be found for roughly US$60. Add in some cheap PVC conduit ($1.50/10ft) and some pvc glue to place it in the ground/seal it waterproof (and away from any chewing/digging animals) and you can run whatever you want for some time. You can find gigabit (fiber) ethernet cards for roughly $45 online, so for around $200 (yes, kinda expensive) and some minor work you can run that cable over to your neighbors and not have something that is likely to get struck by lightning.
plus you can change the cards on each side to upgrade when you want to go to something faster than gigabit.

Re:Cheaper? The only elegant solution is to have one of those y-plug converters that you can cannibalize out of other computers but you can't buy anywhere.
You mean something like this?

Re:I can't think
That I can certainly agree with. Most of the time UTP is fine for the job. There are situations, however, when STP is very helpful. For instance, the local internet service provider here uses it on all of their fixed point wireless installs.
Oh, and for informational purposes:

Re:HDMI is cool, but do PC Vid cards have plug yet

Re:Make you go broke
Then why the bloody hell didn't you get them online? Cables for Less has them in the low teens.
