Re:I don't get it.
Why would anyone want this information?
The only reason for a list like this is to encourage harassment of these individuals just for working somewhere that asshole doesn't agree with.
That's been the way of the left for quite some time. Examples include Antifa goons beating up people they disagree about and trolls harassing people who simply donated money to a side they disagree with. All the things the left accuses others of are what they do day in and day out.

Re:First question..
Overall, are you aware that some things that seem perfectly normal and sensible today will inevitably become unpardonable moral sins in a generation, but there's no telling which things. What do you want in your permanent record, to be used by a government or employer that does not have your best interests in mind, 20 years from now?
So true. I know that
/. is full of left wing types but the reality is that for decades the biggest abusers of these *has* been the left. SJWs embrace the following concepts:Hounding people over their politics is acceptable
https://www.reuters.com/articl... https://www.catholicnewsagency...
Violence is OK as long as you're right and "they" are wrong
http://thehill.com/policy/nati...
No, they can't just all get along if they don't follow the correct politics
https://www.theodysseyonline.c... https://www.washingtonpost.com...
Seriously, it's amazing that the left hasn't pushed for re-education camps (yet). Despite this they have the gall to say that the real danger is from the right. Amazing.

State religion is wrong, but not evil
I'm far more concerned about the number of Americans who want to make Christianity the official religion of the US.
Though I would not want that to happen, I don't see, why it is a graver concern, than Sharia.
Christianity is a the "official religion" of a number of countries, most of which are routinely used as examples for the unwashed Yanks on how to live. Did you know, British monarch is the head of the country's church? Yes, Britain has a state church. Or take Norway — Bernie Sanders' favorite place — they too have an official "state church".
It seems wrong to you and me, because we are Americans and value the First Amendment, but it is not evil.
Meanwhile, the two countries, where Sharia is the law of the land, are Iran and Saudi Arabia... And Islam, unlike Christianity, makes civil law part of the faith. Though it may have been an improvement over some barbaric traditions it replaced in the 7th century, Sharia is decidedly evil today.

Re:Disagreement is only over the "soul" ...
Given that the church accepts evolution from single cell organisms your primordial parent interpretation seems flawed.
Evolution as a whole does not undermine the narrative, does it? It does undermine a very specific belief, that Adam was the father of all humankind. That is a crucial point, because that is where the whole Fall/Redemption belief system starts. If Adam is symbolic or metaphorical, then the whole later part of a human blood sacrifice to atone for that Fall or to perfect the relationship or whatever is rendered unintelligible. That is why this church is willing to admit that evolution is true in general while clinging to a completely incorrect idea of Christian monogenism.
As another poster pointed out "Y-chromosome Adam" would not be biblical Adam, rather it would be biblical Noah. According to biblical accounts Noah and his sons were the only male survivors of the "flood".
Then why are you bringing it up in a discussion about the belief in a biblical Adam? And do I need to point out that the Flood myth is also a scientifically invalid idea that has been refuted? There was never a global flood, and there was never just two human beings.
No one is proposing a literal match between biblical Eve and mitochondrial Eve, not even the church. Again, the church clearly states that genesis contains figurative language. Again, my original statement was that I think genetic science and the figurative language of genesis are not far off from each other.
Certainly, once you strip all of the details away and squint hard, they appear similar. This is true for virtually all religions with metaphorical language. Not a vote of confidence.
That is a quite gratuitous interpretations of "figurative language".
It is my own belief that it is rank mythology. Take it however you like.
What I seem to mostly disagreeing with is your interpretation of the vatican statements. You seem to be reading in things that are not there at times.
What I find funny is that I have to explain basic Catholic theology to someone who is at some level defending it. You can go to any Catholic apologetics website and find that out. I can point you to cathechism after catechism. They will all point you to a simple belief: Adam and Eve were literal people who are the parents of all other humans. Any other view is considered heretical by the Catholic church. This was true the entire time I was a Catholic, and it hasn't changed in the intervening time.

Re:And...Papa Benedict?
What's funny is that this e-mail exhibits an effect of original sin- denial of authority.
To drag this back on topic though I'd like to ask Dr. Bakker what he thinks of the Pope's Proclamation on Reason and Creation yesterday.

Re:And this is tech news
Since when is this a site for *tech* news? There are other sites that do that. This is a "news for nerds" site, and tech news is just part of that.
This "women can't get pregnant from forcible rape" meme has been around for a long time, though, and the right to life movement has been promoting this myth for years now. It has been used as an argument against emergency contraception.
This particular story is about public ignorance of science, so it may not be news *to* nerds, but it qualifies as news *for* nerds. It's not news that ignorant people believe in creationism, it *is* news when creationists use their clout to restrict the teaching of evolution or to give equal billing to creation "science". It isn't news that some people (largely the same people who push creationism) believe a woman can't get pregnant from rape. It *is* news when somebody runs for office proposing to make laws based on that superstition. It's news for *everybody*, but the nerd's special bailiwick is the science and math part.

Re:Can't he sue?
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/prolife_movement_decries_murder_of_kansas_lateterm_abortion_provider/
http://deaconchick.blogspot.com/2009/06/wichita-bishop-statement-on-george.htmlNothing but condemnations all around for several days after the fact. If we were out there constantly saying "Don't kill abortion doctors," We'd probably be accused of (*wink**wink**nudge**nudge*) encouraging it, or insincerity for constantly bringing it up.
On the other hand, when pro-choice individuals attack protesters (even protests not happening at a clinic), there is nothing but silence from the pro-abortionists concerning the violent attacks by their supporters. It seems to me that we are not being given the same consideration. Google "prolife protester killed/attacked", and look for statements from pro-choice organizations.
As for Westboro Baptist, I live in Topeka, they are constantly protesting other churches. I personally have been verbally attacked with vulgar language to the point I nearly rushed a large group of them (something they hope for since they are lawyers and are hoping to take you to court) protesting a friend of mine who was about to celebrate his first mass as a priest, and cringe every time my kids see the pornographic stick figures those people carry around. Nobody I know considers them a Christian organization. Why should we have to release a statement condemning an organization that stands across the street from our church to yell obscenities at us on a weekly basis? I'm pretty sure it's obvious we don't support them.

Re:Easy to do
Actually a bigger dent (and one that would be extremely unpopular... especially on slashdot) would be to put an end to pornography. The correlation between sex trafficking and pornography is very strong as pornography fuels desire for the real thing. For example, you can read this article for references to many government and private studies linking the two. This interview with a government official who specialized in sex trafficking was also very interesting.
The statistics of sex trafficking in America are disturbing. There are an estimated 300,000 sex trafficking victims in the United States alone. Half of them are children (under the age of 18) and 90% of them are American citizens. The average age of entry into prostitution is 13 with an average lifespan once being trafficked of only 7 years. The average girl caught in sex trafficking is dead before she is even legally allowed to drink.
This is an important issue to me. I even wrote a song on the subject and have started speaking out about this problem to raise awareness. If you start to look into this world, prepare to be very disturbed by what you see.

Christian Church statement...
I suppose the Vatican's statement regarding Bin Laden's death is the only thing I liked from them in the past 10 years:
Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices [...]
-
Re:No, the Church didn't say that.
True.
Also, was there something I missed in TFA that said the Church somehow said the internet was BAD because of this? The first article merely says the internet makes it easier. The second one never mentions the internet at all. Some people are reading a little too much into the headline. Besides, it's not like the Pope has never mentioned the internet before.

Re:Internet promotes Christianity
They are just not encouraged to THINK about it.
Really?... Start here if you'd like. It illustrates internal debates beginning way back with St. Augustine, and continues today. Google can turn up thousands more.
Hell, The US Catholic Church can't even decide which translation to use!
...and note the last link, an informal guide to choosing. I'll expand the relevant bit:"At Catholic Answers we are often asked which Bible version a person should choose. This is an important question about which Catholics need to be informed. Some have been given very little help about how to pick a Bible translation, but keeping in mind a few tips will make the decision much easier. There are two general philosophies translators use when they do their work: formal or complete equivalence and dynamic equivalence. Formal equivalence translations try to give as literal a translation of the original text as possible. Translators using this philosophy try to stick close to the originals, even preserving much of the original word order. Literal translations are an excellent resource for serious Bible study. Sometimes the meaning of a verse depends on subtle cues in the text; these cues are only preserved by literal translations. "
The only universal recommendation I could Google up is that literal translations are better than dynamic (pre-interpreted to make more readable) translations. So, err, for an organization that you purport to be all big on control, you'd think that they would not only have one translation, but that they would recommend one which was dynamic (that is, pre-interpreted), no?
As for the Index Libororum Prohibitorum, its purpose has changed dramatically over the years, and for the past and present centuries, holds little if any of what you're representing it as. You may want to actually look up what it really is (link provided for convenience).

Re:Good Guys or Bad Guys?
Free speech is causing harm!
Just like yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater, or releasing the names and addresses of informants against Mafia hit men, or the names and locations of informants against Al Qaeda & Taliban cut-throats & beheaders like Wikileaks is doing.
Dead informants mean fewer people to pass on information on scum like Shahzad, who tried to bomb Times Square with a bomb like this.
Calling himself a Muslim soldier, Shahzad pleaded guilty in June to 10 terrorism and weapons counts. He said the Pakistan Taliban provided him with more than $15,000 and five days of explosives training late last year and early this year, months after he became a U.S. citizen.
Would even a Wembley stadium type attack convince even most people many on Slashdot that terrorism is a serious problem? I wonder.
Bin Laden's demand to the United States (The first thing that we are calling you to is Islam.) is that we all convert to his brand Islam, change our governments to observe Sharia, or he and his minions will continue to try to kill us. Their ultimate goal is to conquer the world for Islam, not simply get the US out of anywhere, destroy Israel, or anything else. Al Qaeda believes it is justified in killing 4,000,000 Americans in pursuit of its goal. As it is, Al Qaeda's world wide body count must be easily in the tens of thousands by now.
Meanwhile, planning continues for the next Al Qaeda assault in Europe, following up on the successful mass attacks in London and Madrid, various assassinations, and the failed attacks in Germany, France, and other places. (Hopefully there is a well placed informant or two that will survive the Wikileaks releases.)
I wonder how many on Slashdot are members of the Internet Jihad, or are otherwise radicalized and trying to influence opinion?
“I imagine how the great jihad will take place, how the Muslims will win, God willing, and rule the whole world, and establish the greatest empire once again!!!” reads another Internet posting from Mr. Abdulmutallab.
This is not the secular, political language of resistance against foreign occupation. It is the language of apocalyptic salvation. It has nothing to do with Iraq, Afghanistan or the Palestinians, although countless young Muslims identify passionately with stories of perceived injustice. Radical Islam claims that martyrdom is the ultimate act of faith – the highest duty of a believer, next to the worship of Allah itself.

Re:blah
Not only that, the evidence of the existence of aliens in no way contradicts Christianity, or the theistic religions.
I can imagine a few problems for religions that believe in reincarnation (how do they account for everyone who claims to remember past lives, only remembering past lives on earth?).
The existence of aliens would be no more a challenge to Christianity then the existence of angels (a non-human intelligence, that just happens to be naturally closer to God.....).
Christianity would regard aliens a fellow servants of God.
The existence of other intelligence life and their relationship to us has often been discussed: for Christians whether they are redeemed the same way: if Christ came for all, whether there might be other incarnations for other species or different ways to redemption, etc.
It is not discussed that much because we lack material for more than speculation until we find some ETs.
Please read what the head of the Vatican observatory has to say http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/believing_in_aliens_not_opposed_to_christianity_vaticans_top_astronomer_says/
Incidentally, while Googling for the link above, I came across a article by a Muslim who believes that the Quran confirms the existence of angels.

Biased reporting will give biased reactions
The reporter of that article obviously had an agenda. In lieu of finding a more unbiased source, I thought it might be worthwhile to at least include a report of the same talk from the opposite side of the camp: here
It would seem from this article that the Pope is looking for us to act with a conscience while on the internet, so that the internet as a whole can be an edifying experience. That is, how we use the internet is important. Raw power must be used to good ends.
Note that I do recognize and appreciate the difficulties with defining "good", "edifying", and even the institution which provides these definitions.
Disclaimer: I'm not Catholic (I'm Orthodox -- we're not in the habit of defending the Pope). I'm just trying to provide a little balance.

Re:Shame they can't do it for other religions
Actually, many Catholics do still believe in indulgences. It's the selling of indulgences that was a historical abuse, one that has long since been abolished. (And by historical, we're talking about before the Council of Trent, not the 1970s.)
Basically, if confession and participating in the other Catholic sacraments is like washing your hands, being granted a plenary indulgence is like getting a full antimicrobial scrubdown before surgery at a hospital. In and of itself, it has absolutely nothing to do with money.

Thousands of years
This scam has been going on for thousands of years -- many religious relics are fake, most notably the heads of John the Baptist (Catholic News Agency; also referred to by Umberto Eco in his mediaeval novels).
More controversially, the Our Lady of Guadalupe icon in Mexico also has a very uncertain provenance.

Re:With two lawyers
I don't think you could get around that.
From his start, he employed dirty tricks and had help from invisible friends working behind the scenes. I mean if we start by looking at his start in politics and how he screwed over the person who put his name in the hat in the first place. And it should be noted that this page is heavily biased in Obama's favor. But then later, when he decided to go after a higher seat, all the sudden a judge decided to unseal a messy divorce case just before the elections making Obama virtually unapposed.
My favorite is how he justifies his position and speech defeating an abortion bill inspired by a nurse in Illinois who was outraged that when a baby was aborted then delivered alive, the doctors put it in a closet to allow it to die "of natural causes". It's no wonder that he reversed the positions on using tax payers money to fund abortions within the first week of office.
I don't think anyone can make the case that Obama isn't a career politician.

Re:Won't someone please think of the children?
It's not like a high school freshman is going to be scarred for life by hearing two sides of an argument. "These people believe this for this reason. These other people believe this for this other reason."
They might not be scarred for life, but they won't learn much science. Scientific debate isn't about valuing everybody's opinion - its about objectivity, logic and evidence.
This isn't even about a debate between science and faith: its a debate between science and bogus pseudo-scientific FUD which attempts to dress religious fundamentalism up as science. Even mainstream religion thinks the debate is absurd.
There are almost certainly gaps and weaknesses in the Theory of Evolution. However, it still explains more than any other theory on offer, and you don't throw it out because it fails to dot a few "i"s - at least not until you have a new, better theory.
When Newton's theory of gravitation failed to accurately predict the orbit of Mercury, the scientific community didn't throw Principia on the fire and go back to crystal spheres and epicycles - it went on to make good use of the understanding given by what Newton's theories did predict, until that smart guy with the bad hair came up with a better theory which someone then went out and proved. That's how science is supposed to work.
PS: I'm all for books on evolution having a label in them which points out that its a theory with which some people disagree provided that, in return, every copy of the Bible is required to have a preface by Richard Dawkins. Fair's fair, eh?

ET, we need your 10%
You are confusing the roman catholic church with your run-off-the-mill protestant crackpot from the US. The roman catholic church has stated numerous times that they see no conflict between either extraterrestrial life or evolution and the church. E.g.,

Re:"Land of the Free"
Lets talk about freedom...
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=10868
Beijing, Nov 2, 2007 / 02:18 pm (CNA).- Organizes of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing have published a list of "prohibited objects" in the Olympic village where athletes will stay. To the surprise of many, Bibles are among the objects that will not be allowed.
According to the Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, organizers have cited "security reasons" and have prohibited athletes from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities.
Other objects on the list include video cameras and cups.
The Spanish daily La Razon said the rule was one of a number of "signs of censure and intolerance" towards religious objects, particularly those used by Christians in China. Currently in China five bishops and fifteen priests are in prison for opposing the official Church.
