Re:Normal, nothing to see here
There are more effective fertility awareness or natural family planning methods that use multiple symptoms. The Frank-Herrmann study https://ccli.org/docs/frank-he... showed user effectiveness of 98% and method effectiveness of 99+%.
Of course these were Germans, not British. Draw your own conclusions.

Beware the evils of contraception
We must escape from the Culture of Death; to learn about alternatives to medical contraceptives and the contraceptive mentality, please visit the following sites where you can learn about the techniques and benefits of modern Natural Family Planning (NFP):

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes
2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.
2360 Sexuality is ordered to the conjugal love of man and woman. In marriage the physical intimacy of the spouses becomes a sign and pledge of spiritual communion. Marriage bonds between baptized persons are sanctified by the sacrament.
2361 "Sexuality, by means of which man and woman give themselves to one another through the acts which are proper and exclusive to spouses, is not something simply biological, but concerns the innermost being of the human person as such. It is realized in a truly human way only if it is an integral part of the love by which a man and woman commit themselves totally to one another until death."
Tobias got out of bed and said to Sarah, "Sister, get up, and let us pray and implore our Lord that he grant us mercy and safety." So she got up, and they began to pray and implore that they might be kept safe. Tobias began by saying, "Blessed are you, O God of our fathers. . . . You made Adam, and for him you made his wife Eve as a helper and support. From the two of them the race of mankind has sprung. You said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.' I now am taking this kinswoman of mine, not because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that she and I may find mercy and that we may grow old together." And they both said, "Amen, Amen." Then they went to sleep for the night. (Tob 8:4-9)
2362 "The acts in marriage by which the intimate and chaste union of the spouses takes place are noble and honorable; the truly human performance of these acts fosters the self-giving they signify and enriches the spouses in joy and gratitude." Sexuality is a source of joy and pleasure:
The Creator himself . . . established that in the [generative] function, spouses should experience pleasure and enjoyment of body and spirit. Therefore, the spouses do nothing evil in seeking this pleasure and enjoyment. They accept what the Creator has intended for them. At the same time, spouses should know how to keep themselves within the limits of just moderation.
2363 The spouses' union achieves the twofold end of marriage: the good of the spouses themselves and the transmission of life. These two meanings or values of marriage cannot be separated without altering the couple's spiritual life and compromising the goods of marriage and the future of the family.
The conjugal love of man and woman thus stands under the twofold obligation of fidelity and fecundity.
2366 Fecundity is a gift, an end of marriage, for conjugal love naturally tends to be fruitful. A child does not come from outside as something added on to the mutual love of the spouses, but springs from the very heart of that mutual giving, as its fruit and fulfillment. So the Church, which is "on the side of life," teaches that "it is necessary that each a -
Determining Fertility
That or there's the symptothermal method where the female checks their body temperature upon waking which is also highly accurate. However, using non-artifical methods shouldn't be seen as a carte blanche. A good Catholic should consider whether they're actually delaying kids for a good reason (can't support them yet, conditions currently make childbirth an iffy proposition) or if it's for more selfish reasons (want to buy that new sportscar first, can't stand the possibility of losing free time to tending children, don't want to risk ruining their figure). *shrug* And not everyone follows that, but that's what's suggested.

Intelligent Design vs Evolution*wry grin* Having lived in the Bible Belt, I'd also wonder how much bias is being caused by the fundamentalists being the loudest ones. Take, for example, the NRA. Just reading that name, you probably visualized a bunch of paranoid militia members, a hillbilly toting his shotgun, or a slightly-crazed-eyes man polishing his large collection. That is, unless you're actually in the NRA or personally know people in it, in which case you'd realize that the public perception is largely based on the lunatic fringe.
Casually googling for the topic of inteligent design and creationism, it seems somewhat divided. People like me who see evolution as just another trick in God's toolbox seem to about evenly describe themselves as believing in "evolution" or "intelligent design." *shrug* To my perspective, the debates generally come down to whether textbooks are (required/allowed) to (admit/deny) the (possibility/certainty) of (randomness/an intelligent being) guiding the process. *wry grin* For any particularly selection of values for those sets, someone on one side is trying to fight for it. Some people want textbooks to explicitly say that there is no God influencing life. Some people want textbooks to explicitly say God is guiding the course of life. Some people are content with not stating the source of evolutionary drift at all, figuring people will fill in the blanks as they please. And then some want to mention both sides, saying that the source of evolutionary change might be random or it might be caused by a higher power. No position will satisfy everyone involved. To my view, the textbooks should go ahead and just acknowledge the subject without any mention of why it happens. Any parent on either side who cares will teach their children to interpret the information as is fit. *shrug* But then again, I feel the same way about sex education. Give all of the facts and I will teach my child what is right, and show them how to notice when they're being snowed by bad statistics. (Ever notice how sex ed. classes downplay the unreliability of artificial contraception and then use figures from the 1960s for any of the NFP methods? At least they acknowledge abstinence being the most effective method these days.)

Divorce ratesI would be interested in seeing you cite your sources on your claim that divorce rates are higher among the Christian population. Right now, it's sounds like you're just spreading FUD. Now if you talked about the rate of divorce among non-Catholic Christians versus the Catholic population, I could see where the non-Catholic Christians could come out much higher on the divorce side. *shrug* Heck, for that matter, compare the rate of divorce among couples who practice NFP versus artificial birth control, you'd find that there's a higher rate of divorce in the latter group. Meh... but I'm ranting in in OT manner to an OT comment.
I guess my question is where you got your statistics. Or if, like 70.023% of statistics out there, they were made up on the spot.

Re:Women don't know when they're fertile? BS
You do know what the technical medical term for a woman who relies on the "rhythm method" of contraception is?
"Mother".
Actually, the modern methods of NFP (natural family planning) are more effective than many artificial birth control methods:

Re:Condoms/guns both legitimize
Hmmm.. "legitimize" was a rather misbegotten word, wasn't it?
I'm going to answer this one. I give a 95% or better chance that you will not agree, but this answer is close to the conservative Catholic view of sex. I'm not sure what other views correspond to each other group.
Sex is good, and legitimate, when it is not separated from the other parts of life to which it is inherently linked. This is rather like saying that a powered automobile engine is good and legitimate when the automobile is hooked up to other specific parts, like a throttle control, emissions reduction equipment, also brakes, and such.
In the case of sex, the sex is inherently tied, (and it is believed to be tied especially in human psychology), to reproduction. It is also tied to the basic family structure. So you don't definitively separate it from those two things, and sex is good.
Condoms, abortion, artificial insemination, and cloning all separate the sex from the reproductive act, and serve to make each appear like a package that you can pick up at the store, use, and discard. However, using and discarding ignores the fact that these things are tied to you, and the way you think and behave. So the conservative Catholic tends to be more holistic about sex.
So as part of birth regulation, Catholics take a more holistic approach. I think that that approach is better than most.
In general, I tend to think the more holistic view is the best view -- and not just in sex. Work, friendships, exercise, nutrition, health, and entertainment can all benefit from a more holistic attitude as well. -
Re:Compression
Of course, people actually downloading the whole human genome probable wouldn't worry about this, but couldn't they use a better compression format than
Huffman would better compression algorithm in my opinion. Huffman uses a tree to determine which encodings to use for each symbol. The encodings might be similar to this: .zip? I bet using bzip2 or rar would shave a couple of hundred MBs off of that 753MB file. Also, the differences in compression techniques would be interesting to see on a large group of files mainly consisting of G, A, C, and T. -- demiurge You find a file that appears important and obliterate it from memory!!! Score one for the downtrodden hacker! This would only work for the
.fa files, but .fa files can contain "N"s also. If you just want to browse the Genome, look through the pieces directory. . -
Doesn't have to be expensive. That's because the pharmaceutical companies enjoy their control over "developed countries" where there is money. Don't forget there are natural ways to get 99%, so you don't have to pay money to the pharmaceutical corps and you have 100% over your reproductive choices. All it takes is education and commitment.
