Metabolizing acetaldehyde
I actually recently found a quite interesting technique to avoid a hangover. It basically involves taking cysteine with vitamin C to neutralize acetaldehyde, while drinking. I already did some experimenting and I think there might be something to this.
The guy was a couple of days ago on a Google Tech Talk in which he discussed about other nutrients for the mind too.

n-acetylcysteine plus vitamin b1 plus vitamin C, pre and post ethanol ingestion. I usually take 600 mg n-acetylcysteine for two drinks, 1000 mg vitamin C, and a generic B-complex vitamin, before and after. I wouldn't believe everything this guy has to say (fundamentalist in his own respect), but the point about acetaldehyde and antidote should be remembered. http://www.ceri.com/alcohol.htm

Do NOT take Ketamine as an aid to health! *LOL* .You're probably thinking of GHB. Take a little, you feel relaxed and good, take a bit more and you go Zzzz.
GHB will send you to sleep when you ordinarily wouldn't and do so in a natural (loose definition of the word) way. And when it wears off, you'll be very fine and refreshed. Taking it before bed so you can concentrate the night's sleep into a couple of hours, isn't going to work however.
GHB is considerably less harmful to you than many patented drugs (including some over the counter drugs), but was made illegal in the US and the EU. As you have natural GHB in your brain, being attached to your head can now count as possession.
The criminalization of GHB was a dubious process, with indications that big pharmaceuticals had a hand in the process. More information on the history of this here. -
Re:Just what we need
FWIW, I know that I feel much better after four hours of sleep than I do after six; I always assumed that the reason the extra sleep left me groggy was that I was being jarred awake from deep sleep (details here). I find sleep fascinating, and always enjoy reading the disussions on it -- especially on how to get the most out of it. It seems like quite a safe tuning parameter to optimize, and a lot easier to get into than nootropics.
I gladly, and with out hesitation, welcome our brain-monitoring alarm clock overlords.

1) Augmented memory. No more forgetting names or passwords. Though it does add some real interesting issues for DRM (can you force me to forget a movie after remembering it X times)
I find choline and piracetam works remarkably well for this purpose. At higher dosages, I find my memory can be enhanced to the point of being photographic; furthermore, it leaves my mind unnaturally limber and quick. The effects remind me of what I like best about dextroamphetamine (or even low dose methamphetamine), minus the body load, addiction potential, and obvious "speedy" effect.
It's classed as a nootropic drug, and fits the bill perfectly. -

Even after MANY years of testing, a lot of the drugs that fall under the heading Nootropics have few to no side effects even when taken at massive doses. Another drug to look into after Piracetam is Vasopressin. There are several others as well. Very interesting reading.

5-HTP Isn't Natural
As someone who uses MDMA more than he'd like, I'd like to say that 5-HTP is not a natural precursor to serotonin.
While 5-HTP is the last metabolic step in the production of serotonin (5-HT), it does not naturally occur in significant amounts in human diets. 5-HTP is instead metabolized from L-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid. Tryptophan was banned due to unidentified toxins present in certain batches of the nutritional supplement.
This may seem like nitpicking, but there is an important difference between the way the human body handles 5-HTP and tryptophan. Although we're extremely good at rate limiting the conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP, we're not so good at rate limiting 5-HTP -> 5-HT. This means that ingesting too much 5-HTP can lead to a temporary condition known as serotonin overload, which could be described as rolling on MDMA without the fun. Dose with care!

Re:*cough* BULLSHIT! (mosaic Down's Syndrome)Better come up with a better explanation. One cannot be "mildly afflicted by downs syndrome." Down's Syndrome is a specific defect in which there is an extra 21st chromosome. Either you have it, or you don't (although the severity of its symtoms vary).
There's a "mosaic" form of Down's Syndrome in which a certain percentage of cells have trisomy-21, and the rest are normal. The proportion seems to be quite correlated to the severity of symptoms. This also makes sense in light of recent therapies that aim to treat some of the symptoms with massive amounts of antioxidants and aminoacids - the abnormal cells cause varying degrees of metabolic overdoses and deficiencies. There are some articles on CERI about this (warning: controversial issue).
I personally have an acquaintance with mosaic Down's who holds down a regular job... he's somewhat forgetful and badly-coordinated, but so am I
