All the surveillance is worth it, because we've caught all the terrorists! I feel safer knowing we've got all those Qaeda evildoers. I'm finally satisfied that we've caught Osama in our dragnet. And the byproduct, catching all the drug mafia, has really cleaned up the streets - and our nation's veins. So we've made some Quakers paranoid - they live to quake, right? And, in an unexpected bonus, the Republicans won't be taken by surprise by any Democratic Party dirty tricks. If only we'd let Emperor Nixon protect us, in his wisdom, we'd have all the oil we want, and terrorists would never have attacked us.

Re:wait who...
The Council on Foreign Relations writes:
The LTTE is notorious for its suicide bombings. Since the late 1980s, the group has conducted some 200 suicide bombings -- far more than any other terrorist group.
That's a bit more than the 76 that the International Herald Tribune article claims.
Neither article sufficiently explains where or how the respective writers gathered their data. In one of the other threads in reply to the original comment here, the author seemed to be under the impression that Muslim bombings are much more common merely because the Tamils are barely reported about in western media, whereas Palestinian suicide bombings are usually all over the news. Perhaps the CFR article exaggerates, or perhaps IHT's author just didn't go beyond adding up easily-accessible western news reports.

Re:Practical upshot? Am I safe? Not from our gov'tI'm not sure what your point is. The OP brought up that America was wrong to drop the atom bomb on Japan. The OP was using this to claim that America and the Europeans have no moral autority to deny Iran the use of nuclear power... even though currently Iran is a sponsor of terrorism, and 65 or so years ago, Japan was even worse. So in direct response to a point brought up by the OP, I pointed out that in the context of what the Japanese were capable of during WWII, dropping the atom bomb was no worse. (Unlike your response that seems to be something from out in left field... that took place 500 to 900 years prior and has no bearing on current politics.) In fact, dropping the atom bombs was probably a lot more merciful than what the Japanese did to their enemies (considering they tortured and murdered more than 20 million more civilians, POW's, and slave laborers than were killed by the atom bombs). It also probably ended the war a lot more quickly, and ulitmately prevented far more bloodshed.
I don't understand why many people now-a-days seem to side with the criminals and not the victims. Why else would the OP seems to try to raise sympathy for Iran (sponsors of Hezbollah) by trying (boo hoo) to show how one of the most brutal war-like societies in modern history (Japan of the 30's and 40's) was sooooo hard done by. I suppose you think that Japan was just misunderstood? Maybe they were all abused as children and it wasn't their fault they raped, tortured, murdered millions of Koreans and Chinese and Filipinos and
... Or maybe Iran is just having some fun supplying explosives to brainwashed college kids to strap on and blow up Israelis with? But maybe we can't see that because we're from another culture and are just too narrow minded to understand? Come on, enough with political correctness already. All you need to understand is that until Iran moves their human rights to the 21rst century, they have no business having nuclear programs. Political correctness is ridiculous in these circumstances. If I have a choice of generalizing, not letting them have nuclear power, and for sure not being nuked by a terrorist; or giving a state with a known track record of terrorism the capability of building a nuclear bomb, I will generalize night and day... and support those who want to keep nuclear capability out of their Iran's hands. -
Re:easy to blow the entire CIA front firm too
Well,... let me help you catch up on your reading about Iraq's ties to terrorists. There is plenty more that isn't hard to find if you really care to be informed.

Re:Dupe(?) + My thoughts.... (terorist states lst)
According to http://cfrterrorism.org/sponsors/northkorea2.html
# a 1983 bombing during a South Korean state visit to Burma that killed 17 South Koreans, including several cabinet members, and narrowly missed killing then South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan;
# and a 1987 in-flight bombing of a Korean Air Lines passenger jet that killed all 115 people on board.
Of course, you can't prove any of this beyond a shadow of a doubt. -
Re:What!?
You probably didn't read this entry from the Council of Foreign Relations:
http://cfrterrorism.org/groups/alaqsa.html
I guess the horrible misrepresentation can be evaluated by asking yourself: "are the martyr brigades more Like a terrorist organization or more UNLIKE it". categories, as we know, are not conceptualized by necessary and sufficiency relations, but by family resemblance. -
Why build when you can buy or steal?
I'm a physicist. I know how hard it would be for an unskilled, untrained bunch of terrorists to build a bomb from scratch. I don't lose sleep over this.
However, why would terrorists want to even try this? Assuming they wanted a real nuclear detonation rather than a dirty bomb, isn't the possibility of purchasing or stealing an intact, complete weapon of more concern? Reading this doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies about the former Soviet Union. And remember, the Pakistanis and North Koreans have the expertise, know-how, materials, and a desperate need for hard currency. -
Re:Rules of Engagement
I don't know the specifics of the terrorist groups in Iraq; however, I do know that Hezbollah is not just confined to the Israeli/Palistinian Conflict. Here's a cite. Here's annother cite suggesting they aren't involved only in the Israel/Palistine protracted conflict.
Feel free to replace Hezbollah with the terrorist group of your choosing. It's not really important, I'm more interested in the ethics of the situation. -
Re:The Iraqis, for one....
These guys say that the US state department calls terrorism:
"premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience."
This means that any attack on a politician or a general or even a middle mangager in the military is a terrorist act. Basically we claim it's only OK for the bad guys to kill the grunts on the front line, while we bomb the cities.
So even attacking the remote-controller of the robot would be terrorism, because he's a noncombattant playing with a computer. The robot is the only actual combattant in that picture.

Re:Not irony, but a direct connection.
You don't really get what the Qaeda terrorist network is. It's a network, formally begun in 1998, though informally operating since at least 1983. Rahman and Yousef, directors of the 1993 attack, are directly connected to Qaeda. Qaeda is like the Internet, and Rahman/Yousef is like a LAN of servers; its a virtual organization of organizations, a communications system between them. As a distributed federation, it is the affilliation among the groups.
Let's say that Hirohito attacked downtown Honolulu (not just the naval base), killing hundreds and knocking out 5% of its real estate, nearly destroying it and killing tens of thousands in 1933. Let's say that Hirohito was a rogue maniac, attacking with a trailer truck full of oil and fertilizer (McVeigh/OK-city style), not the emperor of a giant nation. Let's say he attacked again in 1941, hijacking an American fleet of planes with a team of kamikazes somehow recruited from northern Korea, actually firebombing that 5% of Honolulu, killing thousands, shutting down the city, while simultaneously destroying 20% of the naval base across the island. Let's say that Hawaii is a separate nation, the only global economic/military superpower, whose president is replaced by one of the mayor's closest political allies the year before the second, successful attack. Let's say the mayor goes around campaigning for that president, backing his war in Vietnam, sending his crooked police chief who was on duty while crime dropped in Honolulu during the unprecedented boom of the 1930s, as Hawaii came out of recession to claim that superpower status. Quite a stretch of the imagination, in Hawaii, which spent those 8 years in Depression, while the first attack exists only because you suggested this analogy. Well, if Giuliani were mayor of that Hawaii, I'd ask him, "where's Hirohito? Because if he's going to take credit for protecting Honolulu, he's got to take the blame for the two devastating attacks he did too little to prevent, and wear the shame of promoting a catastrophic war in a country that had nothing to do with the attacks.
If politics were "run like a business", like Giuliani's Republican cronies like to say in propaganda, they'd all be fired for total incompetence, and probably up on charges of malfeasance, to say nothing of embezzlement and no-show.
BTW, Qaeda's attacks on the rest of the world (including Americans) is yet another set of guilt Giuliani must carry for not stopping them before they attacked again, anywhere. How's that for "nonsense", Anonymous flaming Coward? -
Re:That's the way it should work.As for "supporting terrorism", yes Iraq supported Palestinian groups, groups the U.S. has unilaterally labeled as "terrorist", but I don't recall that being the subject of the original surrender terms or any U.N. sanctions.
Thats because you obviously have not read any of the relevant UN resolutions.
Paragraph 32 of Resolution 687:32. Requires Iraq to inform the Council that it will not commit or support any act of international terrorism or allow any organization directed towards commission of such acts to operate within its territory and to condemn unequivocally and renounce all acts, methods and practices of terrorism;
Oh, and Iraq has supported many terrorist groups- not just Hamas. -
Re:You think it's just one guy?
AHAHAH you're so funny, I nearly burst out laughing here.
Terrorism is a military issue, since it invloves defending the entire US against a foreign army
N O its not. Who's dumb now? the grandparent? or you, who just died because you succumbed to your profiling crap and decided to ignore the real threat of angry white men?
You need massive resources on top of smarts, luck and determination to pull off such an attack.
Right, it takes massive resources to fill up a 55 gallon drum with gasoline and kick it from the back of your pickup truck into the middle of an interstate? There's all sorts of ways a single lone person could wreak havoc without "massive" resources or even luck. Oh, but like any true Republican you're only concerned about the good ol' buds at the RNC. Just like on 9/11 when "key" leaders were evacuated immediately under the continuity of government plan. Which was supposed to evacuate all of congress, but well, the Democrats didn't matter so much, so they had to wait for their turn to come hours later.
I am a dark skinned male, with a crew cut and in my 20's
See above as to why this kind of profiling is doomed to fail catastrophically. -
Re:Hindsight is a wonderful thing...
"Was al-Qaeda involved in the 1993 attack on U.S. forces in Somalia?"
"Not directly. But according to a 1998 U.S. District Court indictment of bin Laden and other al-Qaeda members, al-Qaeda issued a fatwa, or religious ruling, calling the 1993-95 U.N. humanitarian mission to Somalia an act of American aggression and urging Muslims to attack U.S. troops there."

Re:VOTE LIBERTARIAN
Saddam in no way posed a threat to you. He did not support terrorists. It a lie, he was a threat only to his people.
You are smoking crack. Iraq has been on the Council on Foreign Relations State Sponsors of terrorism for 2 decades. The US state department Indicted Iraq with these words "Al Qaeda reached an understanding with the Government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq". Iraq openly sponsored Ansar al-Islam (led by Bin Laden trained Abu Musab al-Zarqawi), Hamas, PKK, Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, and the Abu Nidal Organization. Hussein even offered Bin Laden asylum when he was kicked out of Afghanistan by the Taliban in 1999. There are many more examples (1, 2) if you ever bothered to do some research.
Bin Laden is on record calling Saddam a "Socialist Infidel".
He is also on record encouraging the entire muslim world to unit with Iraq to fight against western powers.
I don't know what this deal is with France being the only country asking for evidence instead of biasd inteligence and political cliche.
France doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to defending their own national security.
If the threat of Saddam were real wouldn't they want to jump in the ring with us?
Not when the gravy train called the UN "Oil for Food" program was funneling billions in cash and oil their way. Would you want to attack when your hand was still in the cookie jar? -
Re:Good news
Gas/Nerve agent? Even if you accumulated enough to do some damage, it would be more effective to detonate on the ground, in an enclosed or crowded area. You'd have to get your hands on some power stuff to not have it just disperse in the air.
Hell, Aum Shinrikyo managed to release Sarin nerve gas into a crowded Tokyo subway, and only managed to kill 12 people. Sure, 5000 more injured, but that's still a pretty low death rate.
-
Re:Dodging the issue
I think it's worth giving a damn about, especially if our troops are being put at risk in Iraq. I think it's something many of the troops would give a damn about.
You are missing the point. We are at war with terrorism, not just al Qaeda or Bin Laden. Saddam supported terrorists, including Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, the PKK, Abu Nidal, Hamas, and Ansar al Islam.. Iraq has been on our State Department's list of states that sponser terrorism for almost 20 years. The Clinton administration alledged Iraq/al Qaeda ties several times, including in this 1998 indictment. Even if Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, they were very legitimate and important target in the War on Terrorism.
It's an interesting story, but I don't think it's too likely in the wake of the commisson's report. Got a (credible) link for me?
We haven't seen the commission's report yet. The interim report that created a stir of sensational headlines last week was not from the commission- it was from a runaway commission staff, and the report's broad conclusions about Iraq/Al Qaeda ties have since been denounced by both the Chair and Vice-Chair of the commission.
Oh- and the commission has just been made aware of the al Qaeda meeting in Malaysia that the parent mentioned.
Really? Then why can't we find any?
The fact that Saddam had proscribed weapons that he couldn't account for is not in dispute.
And why aren't we attacking other countries that possess WMD in violation of international law?
No other country is in violation of a dozen unanimous UN security council resolutions requiring them to disarm. Iraq was a very logical step in the war. -
Re:Concerning taxes...
!!!Osama Bin Laden Had Nothing To Do With Iraq!!!!
Even if you ignore the 1998 State Department Indictment charging an Iraq/Al Qaeda relationship, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who formed the Al Qaeda terrorist group Anasr al-Islam within Iraq, and Abu Wa'el, who is a known Al Qaeda terrorist who was on the Baghdad payroll, and the fact that Mohammed Atta was trained by Abu Nidal in Baghdad. Even if you ignore all of these facts, military action in Iraq was still justified, and very necessary.
We declared war on terrorism. Iraq has been on the State Department list of States Sponsoring Terrorism for over 20 years. Saddam supported the following terrorist organizations: Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, Kurdistan Workers' Party, Abu Nidal, Lebanese Hizballah, HAMAS, and the Palestine Islamic Jihad. Russia is now telling us that Iraq was planning an attack against the US. I don't how it could be any more clear. We are fighting against terrorism and terrorist threats against us, not just Osama Bin Laden. Iraq clearly displayed a support for terrorism over the past two decades. If we did not eliminate this threat, we would be missing a crucial element in the war on terrorism. I'm glad that the leader of this country can see the threat, and has the balls to act on it without fear of political recourse. -

Iraq-al Qaeda link comes in focus
Terrorist behind September 11 strike was trained by Saddam
-
Re:One way street...
Why don't you check how many UN resolutions Israel is in violation of
Why don't you compare apples to apples. Iraq was in violation of 17 UNSEC resolutions that specifically cite Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Chapter VII is the only place in the charter that authorizes military action. Guess how many resolutions have been passed against Israel under chapter VII? Zero.
Sure, Saddam was a 'bad guy', but let's not forget we created him.
We did not create Saddam. Saddam rose to power quite independant of our involvement in the middle east.
And if we're going to go after all the 'bad guys', there are many worse than Saddam we should start with.
Like who? Who else was in violation of 17 unanimous UNSEC resolutions, had direct ties to terrorist organizations, known supplies of WMDs, and some of the richest natural resources in the world to finance almost anything that he wanted.
And yes, please show me a link between Saddam and terrorists.
Ok. Here is the Council on Foreign Relations' report on Iraq's terrorist connections. Saddam had known ties to Ansar al Islam, Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, the PKK, the Abu Nidal Organization, and Hamas. He even went on TV and gave money to encourage suicide bombers! Again, George Bush is not the first to claim any of this. This has been the official policy of the US for 15 years.
Bush did lie about Saddam trying to buy plutonium from Africa
Bush said that British intelligence found that he had sought Uranium in Africa, and British intelligence still stands by this claim. There was no lie.
Nevermind that these are weapons that WE (the US) gave him because we didn't like the Iranians.
Those were not the weapons we gave him. Between 1973 and 1990, the US only accounted for 1% of Iraq's arms imports (source). The USSR, France, China, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Brazil, Egypt, Romania, Denmark, and Libya all supplied Iraq with more weapons that we did. And the chemical weapons that Saddam has used are definately NOT from us either (source). You are going to have to find a better reason to hate the US. -
Re:hilarious
We know he had them, because we gave them to him
We obviously helped Saddam some during the 80's, but he was doing just fine without us. The bulk of his army equipment (tanks, aircraft, guns) were made in Russia. France sold him a freaking nuclear reactor. The chemical weapons he has used were from Germany or Japan, and NOT the US.
But the fact remains that not only was Saddam required to disarm, he was required to prove that he had destroyed the weapons we knew he had. He didn't. He has also helped enough terrorists in the past to earn himself a position on our State Department list of states that sponsor terrorism. He also hates our guts. If you don't consider that a threat to us, then I am glad that you are not in charge of our national security. -
Re:Pedantic WMD apologists
Since sarin and other gasseous nerve agents are worthless as single-instance munitions, they'd have to be stockpiled by the thousands to be considered an effective military weapon.
First of all, thats bull crap. Sarin is one of the most toxic substances on earth. 100mg of Sarin will kill you within a few minutes. The 155mm shell found in Iraq had about 6kg of chemical agent. This single weapon, if properly placed, could kill tens of thousands of people.
And do you think we just found the only chemical shell that Saddam made? Do you honestly think he only made one? Lets ignore the fact that Saddam denied that he had weaponized Sarin in artillery shells- its just another lie that we caught him in. Of course he stockpiled them.
Arguing that he "had" weapons of mass destruction simply because a few random shells have turned up is entirely pedantic given the circumstances of Hussein's regime and the nature of the weapons.
I am not trying to argue that he had WMD- that is an established fact. And I think that it is entirely pedantic of you to assume Saddam didn't have a stockpile of weapons given his 12 year track record of lies and deciet. -
Re:Why?
Sorry pal, this isn't Civilization. You can't just improve relations with other countries by throwing money at them.

Re:Imminent Threat
Sorry- this post is really long.
In the early nineties, sure. And then nearly all of it was destroyed, correct?
Some of it certainly was. Some more was used against the Kurds. Some more has lost its potency and become useless. But there is still more that cannot be accounted for.
By the U.N.?
One of the problems with the weapons inspectors is that Saddam claimed to have destroyed a lot of weapons unilaterally in the spring/summer of 1991, so the inspectors were left with the task of trying to prove those claims after the fact.
Did he a) have weapons in 2003
Given his track record, the only reasonable assumption was that he did.
b) directly threatened the United States, and did he c) have the technological capability to achieve that threat?
Once again, Iraq has never posed a direct threat to us. The motivations for invading were to prevent them from becoming a direct threat, and to eliminate the indirect threat of his weapons getting into the hands of some of the terrorist organizations that he supported.
So, if I ask Cuba to show me proof that it has no military capability to attack the US, and they don't comply, my only option is to invade the country?
Cuba is not under international orders to disarm with an authorization to use military force to get them to comply, and Cuba has not shown a willingness to use WMDs in the past.
Owning a gun is not a crime.
It is if the UN Security Council has passed 17 unanimous resolutions ordering you to disarm.
Here are the others on that list: Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria. How many of those countries were involved in the 9-11 attacks? Oh, that's right - none. Something tells me we need a new list.
We are at war against terrorism, not just al Qaeda. Terrorist organizations cannot easily survive without the support of states like those on that list. Incedentally, it looks like Libya might make it off that list soon here because they realized that Bush does have balls.
Sounds like a UN problem to me.
EXACTLY. The UNSEC passed 17 freaking resolutions over 12 years under chapter VII of the UN charter, but they were unwilling to take the steps mandated to enforce them.
We acted unilaterally because?
Because we don't have to wait for France's approval to eliminate a threat to our national security.
And they had used WMDs on foreigners when?
The fact that he had used them showed that he did not care about international law. Same with his invasion of Kuwait.
besides the Iran war where the Reagan Administration trained them and sold them their first WMDs.
The chemical weapons he has used in Iran did not come from us. They came from either Japan or Germany.
Again, if you find the pieces needed to make a bomb inside my house... it doesn't mean that I'm going to make a bomb.
Analogies like that are always so inadequate, but I'll try to work with it. If you had made and used bombs in the past, associated with gang members that carried out bombings, and constantly refused to cooperate with authorities trying to figure out if you have any bombs, and you do this for 12 YEARS, then that is something to be worried about.
Saudis did not see a single bad word out of Bush's mouth.
Again- do you have any special evidence that Bush doesn't have that the Saudi's conspired or planned or otherwise had anything to do with 9-11?
Iraq, besides the two Gulf wars, has killed zero US Citizens. Al Queda killed 3,000, and so far, in a year of occupation, no document has linked Al Queda and the old Iraqi government
There are circumstantial links, but that is irrelevant. We are at war with terrorism, not just al Qaeda, and there is plenty of evidence that Iraq supported terrorists.
Saudi Arabia didn't receive so much as a slap on the wrists.
For what? -
Re:American opinion is no measure of truth
Saddam certainly had ties with Ansar al-Islam, which is associated with Al-Qaeda. Raids on Ansar facilities and arrests of Ansar militants have revealed Al-Qaeda documents and even video tapes of Osama Bin Laden. Bill Clinton has even claimed that there is an Iraq/Al-Qaeda tie.
However, even if there were no Iraq/Al-Qaeda connection, Iraq was still on the top 5 list of countries that sponsor terrorism for over a decade prior to the US invasion. -
