It is sad that human rights are being eroded before new scientific discoveries are being applied to the problem of terrorists. New discoveries on how the human brain works can be directly applied to disempowering terrorists. We could start this process right now.

The new science approach is aided, not harmed, by open discussion yet no one is talking. The press is largely incompetent on technical maters and is only looking for the next sound bite. The authorities are taking their direction for action from the press and public opinion polls.

You're confusing hippies with pacifists. Both are guilty of a certain wishful thinknfulness, but otherwise they have little in common.

The hippie is a convenient straw man. The word has so many associations with shiftlessness and stupidity that even counterculture folks like Ken Kesey use it as a term of a abuse. But it's not fair to saddle every idealistic philosophy with the label. Especially the pacifists, who have been around for centuries, and even played a role in the founding and settlement of the U.S.

Depending on the vehicle, you may be able to do some crazy things with it. As has already been said, after '96 all cars in the US have to speak OBDII (used for emissions testing...at least in some states). There are different physical interfaces, but for OBDII cars not all that many.

IMHO, the real fun is with OBDI cars. My weapons of choice are a '94 Firebird Formula (5.7L LT1) and the following interfaces/software:

- SerialALDL interface from AKMCables

- Datamaster PCM Diagnostic software from TTS Power Systems. This is some of the best software ever, and they have versions for LOTS of OBDI and OBDII vehicles. I get realtime powertrain info from the PCM as well as lots of great ways to interpret/display it.

- LT1Edit PCM re-flashing software from Carputing LLC. I can tweak any tunable value in my PCM and re-flash it in about 5 minutes through the under-dash ALDL connector. They also have LS1_Edit for the LS1 crowd (newer Firebirds/Camaros, and they support V8 trucks, etc now too).

Other goodies available are:

- Mike Chaney's Home Dyno/Road Dyno. Is a sweet little software/hardware package to measure engine performence generall within +/- 3% of a real inertial dyno. And cheap too!

- Andy Whittaker's FreeScan for ALDL OBDI vehicles is a free scan tool for realtime engine data. Pretty nice.

- The DIY_EFI folks at diy-efi.org run a GREAT mailing list for those interested in do-it-yourself fuel injection tuning.

- TunerCat is a suite of tools for dumping/modifying/flashing (or burning) PCM programs for various GM ECMs.

- The old standby Diacom from Rinda Technologies is DOS-based ECM scan tool software. It's OK, but they really should update it and lower prices to compete.

- For the Mustang crowd there is the Tweecer for tuning EEC-based Ford 5.0L engines. I don't have a Mustang, but this appears to be the sweetest little package for tuning them.

I could keep going on for days here, but real work calls... :)

I do this with a combination of streamripper and a crontab. (This only works if you have an always-on connection like a cable modem, of course)

There are a number of NPR stations that broadcast in streaming mp3:

I just set a crontab to run streamripper and record from one of those stations, at the time and for the duration of the program I want. Then tell iTunes to dump the file to the iPod, and poof - several hours of interesting listening, ready and waiting!

All of the stations have program schedules available, or you can just guess for the live programs.

When I have some time, I'll be gussying this up in a Cocoa interface for any fellow Mac OS X users.

I was wondering the same thing. I remember renting LP's and buying blank tapes (and rolling papers) from the original RTT on York Road.

The one in Towson still has vinyl, although the one by JHU may not. I've never been to the Glen Burnie store.

I have a confession - I really want a D1. I bought a film camera about a year ago. I intentionally selected a vendor (Nikon) which made digital cameras which could use the same lens. To understand why this matters, when you buy a nice camera, you invariably buy nice lenses. Individually, these may equal or exceed the price of the camera body. As a collection, your lenses are where you make the serious investment. You don't want to throw this away when you select a digital camera.

Why should I care about using these lenses? There is the obvious benefit of extending the range of digital cameras to encompass telephoto, macro, and wide angle subjects. You also benefit from sharper photos with less spherical aberration. Your existing or new filters can be reused.

You may say (as I did) that this is all nice, but at several thousand, the D1 had better offer some other benefits. It does. The electronics are also superior. For a review see http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/d1/index. html . To summarize this report, the D1 has far less image noise and better control over saturation. See the images in the review.

Before jumping into this market, a few important numbers (in US dollars). The D1 is now about 9 months old and cost about $5k. Cannon is scheduled to release a similar camera this fall for $3.5k. I anticipate that Nikon will be introducing a successor to their D1 at a lower price point in the next few months, though I haven't heard any specific rumors.

First, I live in MD. That out of the way here is how my call to the Speaker's office went;

1) Real nice. And any question I asked was answered.

2) I expressed; please do not allow this bill to pass because as a consumer the bill is not protecting me, I needed a lawyer when I go to Best Buy or CompUSA for software and that is not realistic.

3)I should follow any e-mail with a regular mail (USPS-snail) as that is important.

4) That sending the e-mail/regular mail letter to all sponsors and the chair is a good thing to do.

I have been working on two kinds of letters, one is a consumer style and one is more tech. The consumer level letter I think is the best for e-mail/mail and the tech points letter (long) should be hand delivered. Tricky for me but I will try.

I have some MD info at; RTF and TXT HB19 & SB142 and others. I am also indexing HB19 so the paragraphs are somewhat easier to find.

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Explanation on legality of this information:

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

I can't fault the point of a central group, but, in my case I wish to do freebsd when I get the time. Therefore, I have a copy of "something" that my be useful to me. Note: This is the ftp location and this is a web page with a link. As everyone knows $ drive even a personal project. So I keep whatever I like at this site for free, even if it is costly to me. And if I don't have the most up-to-date files it will not hurt my feelings to know where they are and to store them.-d
