Re:Text vs Images
If someone insists on linking like that, just change the image in question to something more interesting, first changing all your pages to make sure none of them refer to the changed images. It usually gets rid of the problem quickly and depending on who you do it to, it can provide hours of quality entertainment.

Kansas school board rejects Evolution
Will use Outlook only -- "Prayer will defend us from viruses", says school principal.
This will not do good for the acceptance of Linux in the Bible Belt -- Linux evolved through natural selection, while Windows was created by God. -

Re:Should / CanDo you know what warcrimes were done in Afghanistan by US troops, if any? I don't, since this information is held from me. Number of innocent casualties? same. Proof of Bin Laden's guilt? withheld too. The US is just as guilty as China or Saudi-Arabia in this one.. all do censorship, all present their government's opinion as authoritive.
Ah, but in the U.S., I can look at contraversial religious websites, websites that criticize Islam (and my own religion) , porn [do you really need a link?], and pretty much anything I want. Even when someone says I can't look at some information, I can look at it, and they can take me to court, and see if a judge thinks their concerns are more important then free speech.
I'm getting sick of these sophmoric statements of "the U.S. is just as bad as [x]", where x is the criminal of the day. Part of my discomfort is because I recently had the same frame of mind, and I hate seeing others make the same mistakes.
Why would we know of U.S. warcrimes in Afghanistan? The Taliban kicked all the foriegn journalists out. Sure, we don't see all the evidence against Bin Laden, but few dispute that his organization trained Islamic radicals, and was probably behind other terrorist acts as well as Sep. 11. I would be angry if we were putting him on trial without enumerating evidence, but first we need to imprison him based on the evidence we have.
Yeah, the U.S. government used propaganda and spin control and even lies, just like every other government on earth. But we also have a free and active press, which is always trying to catch the government lying. Sure, the big media is all corporate controlled and puts the rich white man spin on everything, but there's plenty of other news outlets, and almost every large city I've been in has a newspaper whose sole reason for existance seems to be to criticize the big media paper in town. Afghanistan? No free press. Saudi Arabia? No real free press.
This is a country where three little letters seperate propaganda from porn from anti-propaganda, and there's nothing George W., Time Warner/AOL, or Microsoft can do to stop it. And when they try, we can eventually beat 'em in court.

Re:Read it for what it's worth...On a side-note, Adams was a devout atheist. It doesn't seem fitting that we should be worried that he's looking down on all of us screaming, "No, you idiots! Don't publish that!"
Not to troll or anything, but if Mr Adam's did indeed choose to reject our savior Jesus Christ, then he is suffering eternal damnation as we speak. God so loved us that he gave each of us a chance to walk away from Him, if we so chose. If Mr Adam's did this, then, as much as it pains me to say this, he is most likely burning in the fires of Hell. I would hope most Slashdot readers are smart enough to see athiesm as a tool of the devil and reject it. Opening up your heart to the love of Jesus Christ is the only way to gain happiness and eternal life. My prayers are with all of you. Thank you. God bless.

Just ask Jack Chick, everyone knows the world is only 6000 years old so any carbon dating that says it's older is obviously wrong.

Yet another article here...
This one is from chick.com, a fabulous land of open-mindedness and free thinking.
(Of course I am being very facetious. This is a site full of those Christian tracts they hand out to random people on the street.)
And here's the best one, one on evolution!

Re:If all religions worked like $cientology...Unfortunately, there's no force on earth that can stop the proliferation of Chick Tracts...
Yes, there is. Just point out to some militant Moslem organization their attempt to convert Moslems to Christianity, and watch the bombings.
:-) -
If all religions worked like $cientology...
... no religion would ever give any materials away. Just think! No more door-to-door Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, or random evangelicals disturbing our sleep ever again! Also, no more Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms, either.
Unfortunately, there's no force on earth that can stop the proliferation of Chick Tracts...
?!, "...not from sectarian malice." -
Re:How does this play into religion?
Oh, you'd be surprised how ridiculously irrational people are, especially on religion. Weak arguments may not cut it for you or me, but any evidence, no matter how weak, is good enough if you start looking for it after you have already decided on your conclusion.
To this effect, check out the insanely hilarious christian cartoonist Jack Chick. Hours and hours of entertainment, you'll laugh until you cry and then it suddenly becomes depressing when you realize that there are people who actually beleive this stuff. -
Re:Darwin VS God (Catholics vs. Christians)I'm young and atheist. So I think that my point is correct but that I am mis-using pretty much every term I use. So, no one understands what I am trying to say. Help me out. My roommate claim to be "Christian." He follows a very literal translation of the bible (King James version). He's very conservative. Is he Catholic or Protestant or neither?
He's what Catholic's would call a Protestant, but he would never call himself that. It's a term invented by one group to describe another, and not the one they choose themselves. It's kind of like maid vs. house cleaner, or housewife vs. home maker, or mailman vs. letter-carrier, if we were talking about sex roles instead of religion.
One philosopher who studied religion made the assertion that terms only have meaning within their context (any philo. or religious study majors help me out with names/facts). In other words, you can't define these terms, only determine what the speaker means by them.
For instance, many religions that stem from Jesus Christ have a ceremony with bread and wine, that becomes (in their words) the Body and Blood of Christ. For the Catholic Church, officially, this means the bread and wine maintain the form of bread and wine (still provides nourishment, you could get slightly drunk, etc.), but it's essence is now the Body and Blood of Christ. To make a (possibly heretical) comparision, remember those Disney films where a man is transformed into a shaggy dog? The dog has all the form of a dog, but is the human in essence. Now, take away even the intellect of the man, and you are left with a dog in all things, except that it has a human soul. Try Occam's razor on that!!! (Who ever said Occam was right?)
Anyway, that's a fairly complex explaination. If you ask the average Catholic, they may believe that it is just symobolic, or that it now has a new form (my mom once told me you couldn't catch germs drinking from the common cup, which I seriously doubt). Others may not even have thought about it much. Go outside of Roman Catholicism, into other Catholic or "Christian" religions, and you'll get even more answers for what "Body and Blood" means.
Those that call themselves "Christians" usually mean "True Christians", as opposed to other groups, like Roman Catholics, that (in their opinion) don't worship Christ, but instead a corrupt, earthly organization (the Roman Catholic Church). While American Catholics identify themselves as Catholic (often dropping the "Roman" part), they will also identify themselves as Christian. Protestant is a term that only makes sense in Catholic/Protestant relationships, and is mainly used by Catholics to describe the Christians.
Fully confused? Good. Not much of it makes sense, and only a few have studied the actual theological differences. The rest are mostly fighting based on "our group is better than yours", or on "common sense" (the sum of the things you learned up to age 18).
If you want to really probe the differences, start asking about terms like being "saved", "Baptised", and start the old "Faith vs. Good Works" debate,. or the "literal vs. figurative" interpretations of the bible, or what it means to say the bible was "inspired by God/ Holy Spirit". Check out sites like Jack Chick's, for some Christian Propaganda/Ministering Aids, and search for criticism of his claims. If you are interested in what Catholics belive, go to the source: there is a copy of the Catechism on the Vatican's web site, which includes what all Catholic's should believe (not that all do). Have fun, there's a lot of info out there. Even if you are an atheist, you have to deal with religious people every day, and it's better to take the higher ground, to understand them, rather than to hate them because they are different (as the religous right does to various groups, or liberals do to the religous right).

Re:Scientific Creationism? What is it?
Scientific creationism is a dogma (counter to the prevailing evolution/big-bang driven dogma) that there is verifiable evidence of the Bible's version of "how it all began".
To an evolutionist like myself, it sounds like flaccid attempt to make creationism "all scientific". They reinterpret data to their liking and ignore much geological, biological, and physical evidence. Now indeed, there may be some conspiracy afoot to hide the "real" evidence, but I don't think highly of elaborate conspiracies either.
Some of your more conservative Christian learning institutions have faculty devoted to this. And there's ample material to read about:
Creation scientists are amassing evidence that life was much different before Noah's flood. Fossils of 12-foot-tall men, pig-sized beavers, 50-foot crocodiles and foot-long cockroaches have been found. Fossilized rain forests lush with 90-foot fruit trees have been unearthed in African and Australian deserts, Colorado and Antarctica.
Religiously, it's misguided. Proving that God exists would topple faith. But that's never stopped anybody before. It reminds me of a quote that most disciplines with the word "science" in them, aren't.

Comics, micropaymentVery well done indeed. Many people have been saying this, yet the industry doesn't seem to get it. Why? Microsoft does have a quasi-monopoly on the browser market, why haven't they implemented a secure transaction protocol? They could be running the bank themselves and be making billions in fees. Take a look at page 2 in the carton linked at Scott's comic: That's exactly what it could look like.
The practical applications are endless. Even when I only think about comics: Right now, good comics that convey a political or scientific message are rare. But imagine: On Kuro5hin, you get 1000 users to vote on a story -- why shouldn't the same 1000 users donate 10 cents to the production of a comic? And the resulting art would be free to reproduce wherever you like. I would really like to see a good, free evolution theory comic in response to Jack Chick's creationist *$()=).
Now, think about what could be done on sites like Slashdot -- imagine the Slashdot effect with "money-URLs". Slashdot's weekly worthy cause: "Donate 1$ to the EFF" == 10000$ in donations. "Donate 1$ to help this college student get a good lawyer." "Donate 1$ to build a school in Cambodia."
Now that you think about it, doesn't it sound suspiciously like the powers that be may be afraid of our combined monetary power? And even if this is not the case, do we really want a central Microsoft bank that controls our money flow?
Where is the open-source movement when you really need it? This is one of the most important battles of the 21st century -- I'm not exaggerating, consider that this payment method will be applied macro and micro, for shopping as well as for donating.
Why don't we have an open micropayment foundation, and an open-source bank, with Richard Stallman as the director? Heck, I'll even settle for Natalie Portman, but really -- the crypto is out there, writing a browser plugin shouldn't be that hard. A mini fee (say 1/10 cent per transaction) might be used to pay the bank, surpluses go to the EFF. What are we waiting for?

Why not leave Domain Names Registration...up to God?
If anyone does anything really wrong, they will be smitten.
"And on the seventh day the Lord created

Re:clones
Why must you say something so harsh? These sound like the words reserved for an enemy.
Do you believe that Jesus is the son of God? If not, why would you hold such contempt for what you believe to be just a man?
In light of your horrible comment, you might want to check this link before the day is out.

Re:Catholics aren't Christian AMEN TO THAT!
Most Catholics are damned to hell. They indulge in pagan rituals and Mary worship. They worship statues and magic trinkets. Chick Publications has a great tract which asks Are Roman Catholics Christian? It is well worth the read in order understand this problem sect.

So what if it *is* Mao?
The right wing has learned a lot from Mao. Wacko "Christian" comic artist Jack Chick got the idea for comic-book propaganda tracts from Mao. Hey, Mao successfully turned a vast nation into a depressing, mindless, ideologically dominated tyranny. Since that's what the right wing has in mind for the U.S., why not learn at the feet of the master?
Pat Buchanan and Chairman Mao are soulmates under the skin.
