Green spray paint
As you should have noticed with the Olympics, China is putting in more work to reduce pollution than anywhere else and luckily they didn't stop after the Olympics.
You were just impressed by the landscaping.

Chinese geoengineering: just spray on and let dry!
Keep in mind, in China they use green spray paint on the grass in its parks and the sides of its strip-mined mountains.

Additional information
As a Chinese I don't like the information control by Chinese government. But nothing is worse than mind manipulation. That Tao Wang is working for a Chinese cult group Falun Gong. So this project is back by a special interest group with strong political agenda. http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2008/8/3/99490.html

Re:^^ Mod Parent Up!
That's not ironic.
In any event, if the poster practices Falun Dafa/Gong then that is their business, and if they would like to tell everyone that it isn't an evil cult as the Chinese authorities propagandize it to be and that it, instead, is a beneficial spiritual practice, then that is that poster's perogative. Unlike China, the United States is a free country and posting that in a forum isn't going to result in the poster getting killed or tortured.
Besides, that quip wasn't part of the message, that was part of the poster's signature. -

The cause may lie elsewhereCould this have something to do with the fact that China Telecom charges close to $1 per minute for calls to United States and Europe?
As the article stated:
China routinely blocks access to Web sites on politically sensitive subjects such as the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement and the 1989 crackdown at Tiananmen Square
I'd say it has more to do with the fact that people (mainly Falun Gong practitioners) like to use services such as Skype to tell Chinese mainlanders, who don't have access to free (as in speech) media, the truth about the persecution that's going on there. -
Not a troll
Really, your argument is so stupid. Google is a business. Even if they want to change Chinese politics (they don't have to), there is *no way* to do it that doesn't require them to cooperate -- at first
First off, neither your post nor mine was a troll, nor did either deserve a downmod. We just disagree. I wish that was tolerated more by slashdot moderators. That said, you were being a jerk about it.
The reason I expect Google to try to change Chinese politics is (a) because China's government is evil. Really, really evil. Google has an explicit "don't be evil" policy, and, even if they didn't, there is precedent for punishing companies that cooperate with evil regimes.
Part of the problem is Google's arrogance. They think that they're so great that the harm done to the Chinese people by not having access to Google would exceed any potential political benefit. The other argument being made here is the opposite--Google is nothing special and could just as well be replaced by a Chinese government-run search engine. Both of these arguments are wrong. As the best search engine around, Google has some leverage, but it's not like Chinese peasants will die if they can't check their Gmail accounts. If building a Google-quality search engine was easy, then their US competitors would have done so.
US corporations can make a difference in China's policy, by making it clear that they won't cooperate with human rights abuses. It won't always work, but it will help.
The ethical justification for allowing a free trade relationship with a repressive regime is to promote positive change. That will only happen if we grow a backbone.
Just a thought--China actively violates a vast array of US internet and intellectual-property related laws (think spam, widespread commercial piracy, hacking attacks, etc.). Why don't we try to actively subvert their "Great Firewall"? Imagine what the geniuses at Google could do if they put their minds and hearts into it... -
Re:This sounds like a good idea, BUT...Yes, sadly China is paranoid enough to "make a list of a few people and try to filter them out" out of the millions of visiting tourists every year. This is especially apparant in the case of Falun Gong where foreign citizens are currently being held without trial for speaking out against the wrongful treatment of their fellow practitioners.
American citizens such as human rights activist Dr. Charles Li have been arrested and dissapeared into the black hole which is the chinese justice system never to be seen again.

China's Human Rights Violations
Due to the vast number of Falun Gong practitioners in the world (over 100 million) I think that the largest reason for this censorship is because the number of these people (who attempt to align themselves with truthfulness, compassion, and forebearance) grew so fast in China that they outnumbered the members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and since Falun Gong practitioners are not interested in politics, the CCP considered this a threat.
This censorship by China has taken it's most cruel form in the sense that (and this is a FACT) there is currently PERSECUTION going on in China, and it is extending outside of China. The CCP is even trying to make moves on pracitioners here in the U.S. but OUR government won't allow them to. -

Re:Falun Gong
You guys can say what you want about Li Hongzhi, I just hope you don't make a huge mistake. It should be noted that there is PERSECUTION going on in China where the CCP is murdering, brainwashing, and torturing people who practice Falun Gong, a practice that centers itself on what it considers to be the cosmic characteristic of the universe TRUTHFULNESS, COMPASSION AND FOREBEARANCE (Zhen-Shan-Ren)

Re:Favorite tea beverage...
Coffee and tea don't come from plastic bottles or otherwise premixed, of course. They definitely don't come in syrup form.
I'm always a bit surprised that slashdot geeks seem to be big brand name junk food consumers. I would have thought that people who don't believe in accepting software or hardware prepackaged, this-is-the-way-you-get-it-and-you-don't-need-to-
k now-how-it's-made, would also be into hacking food. In fact to me the foundation of all hacking starts in the kitchen. Also the best sex, but that's a different matter. Well no it isn't actually but anyway. This isn't intended as a personal slight. But Nestle is evil. You can do better.

Re:Falun Gong a dangerous
Falun Gong is not a religion, people of any religion can practice it. Nor is it a political movement, there is no political agenda in the teachings of Falun Gong. It is a cultivation practice which is based on peaceful exercises, meditation, and centres on the cultivation of your heart and mind.
The core principles of Falun Gong are Truth, Benevolence and Compassion, and it has received recognition from world leaders and government representatives as being a great benefit to society, including proclamations from over 300 cities in the US. It's founder Li Hongzhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the last three years.
Some proclamations from world leaders: Proclamations
There are over 70 million practitioners in China alone (the official figure from the Chinese Government), and over 100 million worldwide. Practitioners in China are being persecuted basically because leaders of the communist party became concerned that the number of people practicing Falun Gong outnumbered the members of the Communist party.
In 1999 Falun Gong was outlawed and since then over 100,000 practitioners have been illegally detained and over 400 practitioners have died from torture (official Chinese government figure - the total figure is estimated at ever 1600). Six months ago orders were passed which allowed police officers to shoot a practitioner "on-sight" for putting up a Falun Gong poster in public.
Crimes committed against Falun Gong practitioners include police brutality, illegal detention, illegal sentencing, rape, brutal torture and murder. The following link contains news about the persecution: Falun Info Net
In our countries of freedom and democracy, we should not be celebrating the crimes against a group of people who are attepting to lead lives based on truth, compassion and forbearance. We should not be celebrating crimes of persecution, torture and murder.
I started practising Falun Gong six months ago and have found it to be very beneficial. I am writing this in a hope to shed some light on a poorly understood situation and true human rights crisis.
Kind Regards,
An IT guy and Australian Falun Gong practitioner.
