State Of Slashdot Censorshipversion 1.2.1, (last updated 20th July 2002)
Note to moderators : Do not moderate this post down, if you do then you support the editors stance on censorship and you support the end of free speech and support evil organisations like Microsoft, RIAA, MPAA and laws like the CBTBA and DMCA. Moderating this post will only waste mod points, and will not work!
Sign this petition, let your voice be heard!
Slashdot is using censorship! It is trying to eridicate free and open discussion like we know slashdot to be, it has the following RESTRICTIONS in place to Censor you
They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.
- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, mainly from countrys like africa, so this yet more DISCRIMINATION!
Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls.
The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site! In addition the Editors use their un-limited mod points to create a communist style censored discussion on slashdot!
But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE!
We wan't these stupid useless restrictions REMOVED! This comment will be posted again and again until it does!
Inportant imformation for users
Boycott slashdot, they are pissing over their community, they are becoming like the RIAA and MICROSOFT! Do NOT TOLERATE THIS SHIT! Here are some real news for nerds sites. We don't need slashdot, slashdot deserves to die!

Re:Get rid of pop culture vultures!
Your fears about people falsely sharing on p2p networks have come true (well, sort of) on another p2p network, called Direct Connect (Linux client available also). Basically, one selects from a pulic list of nodes, each of which has its own rules regarding the min. shared content, upload slots, and connection speed required to gain access. Although there are occassionally people who try to cheat the system, with fake shares, or shares of installed program directories, etc., the small size of most hubs -- just about all less than 1000 people, allows for effective self-policing by the ops. All in all, it works very effectively, and a great source for obscure files. Something to think about .

Re:Altivec?
He's probably referring to a prediction by Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff (who owns Intel stock, BTW). According to the article, "There's a better than 80 percent chance Apple will make the jump [to Intel] in two to four years, he said." Shortly after Neff's report was released, AnchorDesk Executive Editor David Coursey made a similar prediction, predicting the change would take place in less than 18 months. No word on how much Intel stock he owns
;-)
Of course Apple makes virtually all its money from hardware sales, so I can't imagine why they'd want to make such a move. Not to mention, direct competition with Microsoft is never a good idea... -

Interesting happenings in the PPC world lately...
I think this is great news, it's good that Apple is at least benignly tolerating Linux on their platform, even if not actively encouraging it.
I don't see the value of this so much for Apple, but for the Linux/PPC platform in general. Linux PPC, unlike OS X, does not run uniquely on the Apple platform, other implementations are possible. And there have been some interesting developments in the PPC/Power world lately, for example:
IBM's newly announced desktop PPC processor. Possibly this will be the successor to the G4 in Apple's offerings.
Also, the new Amiga platform will be PPC based, and also runs Linux. Whether this new platform will have any substantial success is still open to speculation, but it will be an interesting experiment, whatever the outcome.
Also, IBM is looking to eventually migrate their mainframe line over to the Power architechture, probably starting with the Power6.
It would be nice to see some competition to the x86 in the commodity processor market. I was ready to write off PPC/Power as doomed, but the recent flurry of activity on that front has caused me to re-evaluate my position. And an OS like Linux which can run across all the various implementations of the architecture would be great for encouraging it's propogation. Imagine applications that are binary compatable across everything from your iBook to a mainframe. -

At least download.com is warning users...
Weird that they have removed older comments, but at least download.com are warning potential users on the NeoAudio download page. This is from download.com:
Editor's note: This download includes additional applications that are bundled within the software's installer file, some of which may be provided by parties other than the developer of this download. These applications may deliver advertisements, collect information, overlay content or graphics on the Web site you are viewing, or modify your system settings. As with all downloads, CNET recommends that you pay close attention to the options presented to you during the installation process. Known third-party applications bundled with this download include SaveNow and TopText. For more information, please read CNET News.com's report on bundled software.

Not deleted. Still There.
Technically, the product was 'updated'.
You can still access the old comments thru this url. http://download.com.com/3302-2140-10132447.html?ob =0&pn=1&fb=2 (378 comments strong)
And if you click on the 'NeoAudio' link in the bar labelled "CNET > Downloads > Windows > Audio > Rippers & Encoders > NeoAudio > User Opinions" you will see this 'update' message.
Once you do this, you will be brought to the new comments section for the updated neoaudio. Which resides on http://download.com.com/3302-2140-10137006.html?ob =0&pn=1&fb=0 (at 32 comments and increasing)
This makes me curious. Can an author of a product on download.com simply erase a ton of bad publicity on it's own by simply releasing minor point releases every couple of days ? -

Gotta love the company..
There really are some gems on the download.com pagethat guy points to for neonapsters ripping player, these are from the "only positive" remarks option for their CD ripper (old?), i didnt dare read the "only negative"
"Superb! Just like CDex, but with spyware"
I love this program. I used to use CDex, but I was annoyed at the lack of useless spyware included in the download. Since I switched to NeoAudio, all those troubles have gone away. I now have way more spyware and adware than I know what to do with. Thanks, NeoNapster! "
and
"Best spyware I've seen in years!!!"
I've been using NeoAudio anally since it was first released. Forget CDex!!! CDex doesn't invade your privacy and solicit like NeoAudio does... NeoAudio is the BEST spyware out there, BAR NONE!!!
even cmdrTaco gets in on the action with...
"Wow! The best of its kind I have seen!"
This is an incredibly well made piece of software. It completely outperforms CDEX and the SpyWare is only enabled if you request it, and in return, you get 100+ free songs. This completely rocks. Don't use anything but this!
Thing is props for giving out the source code as GPL but is this just another morpheus type company who get GPL code change a few words and brand it their own, and give it away with spyware contributing nothing to open source ,
or
are they a honest company only wanting to advance the concept of filesharing further by contributing something worthy to P2P other than "free spyware" and a fancy GUI ?
__ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ __ _ -
Re:So?Of course its legal. No where have I seen complaints from the CDex developers. They are totally okay with what NeoNapster did to make NeoAudio. But are the users okay with it? The users should know other versions of the same software are available, in their original unadultered form. And now that download.com censored the NeoAudio comments, users are left in the dark.
Personally, I'd love to see a products--commercial or otherwise--which use GPL'd works in a productive manner. Gnucleus + CDex + Ogg + LAME + Freenet + OpenNap + VirtualDub...now that would be cool, if they where integrated correctly. Would definitely make one hell of a file sharing program.

Re:Yaay apple!
I believe that prior to this announcement, using the name FireWire cost the OEMs $1-2 per product.
You may be thinking of the hardware royalty, which has been reduced from $1/port to 25 cents. Prior to the May announcement of the 1394 Trade Assiciation adopting Apple's name and logo as a branding identity (and Apple granting free-as in beer-use to do so), I couldn't Google a single reference to a separate fee for the use of the Trademarked Firewire name and logo, once you've actually paid to incorporate the technology into your hardware. -
Re:Don't Do That
Another proof of it... Flaw opens door in Windows, Mac, Linux
The MIT Kerberos development team issued a warning and patch on its Web site.
Apple Computer confirmed that its Mac OS X operating system contains the vulnerability, which has been fixed through a recent security advisory, available through the software's automatic update mechanism.
Several sellers of Unix and Unix-like operating systems, including Red Hat, Debian, FreeBSD, Sun and NetBSD, said that their software was affected by the issue, and issued fixes. HP said it was investigating the bug's impact.
Microsoft said it is still investigating how Windows is affected by the problem.
The relevant patches are available from the companies' Web sites, or through the CERT advisory on its Web site.
EVERY Operating System will have exploits. It's all a matter on how it's addressed. M$ Still hasn't learned to patch & go. I use Win 98se, NT4, 2000, & XP (plus Mandrake 8 and SuSE 8) on a daily Basis. And the reboot on every other update (XP has gotten better but I love Linuxes ability to kill a service and restart a service without a reboot).

Salon rockets on Red Hat deal
By Dawn Kawamoto
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
January 5, 2000, 2:00 PM PTupdate Linux mania has struck again.
Salon.com shares jumped as much as 90 percent today after the Net publisher announced it will be featured on Red Hat's Web site, making it the latest company to see its shares jump dramatically at the mere mention of an affiliation with a Linux-related company
Under the deal, Salon will be a premier partner on Red Hat's recently launched news site, Wide Open News. Red Hat develops and distributes the Linux operating system, which competes with Microsoft's Windows and is gaining in popularity.
The companies offered no details about the number of visitors Red Hat's Web site receives or how Salon will benefit from the deal. Salon's revenues come from advertising on its Web sites.
That was only 2 1/2 years ago, and it's difficult to remember that the financial world was so delusional that this plan sounded like a sure thing.
Does anyone remember any Salon content ever turning up on the Red Hat site? I do recall them briefly trying to turn it into a portal...

Spamford Wallace
I'm surprized at how seldom he is mentioned, but one of the most prolific and notorious spammers, Mr. Sanford Wallace, AKA Spamford Wallace, was responsible for the vast majority of spam that cluttered inboxes about 5 years ago (ah, a lifetime in Internet time). This notorious individual was targetted by hackers, and he even floated a trial balloon that he'd start his own spam friendly backbone after getting chased from provider to provider.
Anyways, the legal system worked as Cyberpromotions was shut down by lawsuits. Sort of like crime, the reality was that it was only a few individuals who were responsible for the overwhelming majority of spam, and that was true in this case too: After Spamford was shut down, the amount of spam hitting inboxes literally slowed to a crawl. -

Even Sun is getting into the Linux game now!
According to this ZDNET article, Sun is reorganizing their low-end server strategy to include Linux. In the past, they have been one of the bitterest enemies of Linux, but now it seems like they've realized the benefits of using it on Sun systems.

Re:A terraflop?
Well, according to this cnet article, the IBM/Sony "Cell" chip, which is rumored to be the cpu for the PlayStation3, is capable of over a trillion calculations per second, or "roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz." if a Pentium 4 is close to 10 GFLOPS, then 100 times that would be close to a TFLOP. Pretty cool if it's true.

My Favorite Part...
...Glad someone has the guts to say it.
3. The American Dream. The promises all of us are made, tacitly or otherwise, throughout our lives as Americans. The dream we inherit as each successive generation enters grade school - that we will be freer than our grandparents, more successful than our parents, and build a better world for our own children. The promises made by our textbooks, our presidents, and our culture, throughout the course of our childhoods: Fair pay for a day's work, and the right to strike. The right to leave a job that doesn't satisfy, or is abusive. Freedom from indentured servitude. The premise that every citizen is allowed a vote, and no one will ever be called "slave" again. The promise that libraries and basic education in this country are free, and will stay so. These are not ideas I came up with on the spur of the moment; this is what we're taught, by the culture we grow up in. And of everything we are taught, one issue is always paramount - in America, it is the people who rule. It is the people who determine our government. We elect our legislators, so they will pass laws designed for us. We elect and pay the thousands of judges, policemen, civil servants who implement the laws we elect our officials to pass. It is the promise that our government supports the will of the people, and not the will of big business, that makes this issue so damning - and at the same time, so hope-inspiring. When Disney are permitted to threaten suit against two clowns who dare to make mice out of three balloons and call them "Mickey", the people are not a part of it. When Senator Hollings accepts hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from entertainment conglomerates, then pretends money has nothing to do with his stance on downloading as he calls his own constituents "thieves", the people are not involved. When Representatives Berman and Coble introduce a bill allowing film studios and record companies to "disable, block or otherwise impair" your computer if they merely suspect you of file-trading, by inserting viruses and worms into your hard drive, it is the people who are imperiled. And when the CEO of RIAA commends this bill as an "innovative approach to combating the serious problem of Internet piracy," rather than admitting that it signifies a giant corporate step into a wasteland even our government security agencies dare not enter unscathed, the people are not represented. (Hilary Rosen, in a statement quoted by Farhad Manjoo, Salon.com June 2002) -

"Ever since I downloaded this, my e-mail box has been full of great, insightful advertisements! Also, all of my pop-ups are custom-tailored to my browsing preferences!" -- JarJar24
"I have used this software and cdex and it is NOT a rip off. You are all making false accusations based on nothing. They are a little similiar but this is NOT a clone of cdex. If you want more proof then feel free to email me at jetonia@yahoo.com if not then STFU and quit posting this non-sence about it being a rip off because ITS NOT!" -- Jetonia@yahoo.com
I'm surprised NeoNapster isn't planning a ResellerRating-esque "censoring" of these posts. Anyone recall that particular episode? I recall one company performed the classic iBait-And-Switch on their online store... followed by a quick assaulting on ResellerRatings and other such sites. They complained, and the ratings sites caved, removing the deluge of negative reports. In their defense, though, they were later reinstated. Check HardOCP for more info... this was a year ago or more. -
Re:Before anybody starts screaming "GPL violation"Wow, I hadn't noticed that. That changes the situtation.
In that case, I'm complaining to Download.com; I'm sure they'd be interested in knowing that they're pointing to an illegal download.

Fan the flames...
As much as this has been debated to *death* in various Apple forums (including
/.) -- and as much as I still think that it is unlikely to happen -- this move doesn't look so dumb if Andrew Neff (no, I'd never head of him either) is to be believed. The more Apple can force users and ISVs over to OSX the less technical problems they might/will have if they port Classic over to x86 to retain some sort of backwards compatibility (a'la 68k to PPC).
Man, this latest "Apple will use x86 chips eventually" sure has some legs. -

Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls. It also blocks serivces like CgiProxy and filters like t'inator.
The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site! In addition the Editors use their un-limited mod points to create a communist style censored discussion on slashdot! This one sided discussion makes trolls more determined

Re:Where are the support opensource vendors?
1. If you want to use an opensource product, where do you learn about it? I know about oracle and mysql, but who do I goto for mysql paid support?
Well, if you're interested specifically in mysql, then it's probably best to contact the company that specializes in it.2. What about total solutions, other than RedHat or VA Software, are there other vedors? Or do I just goto IBM and Say "Linux"?
Yep, go to IBM and just say Linux.3. Are any opensource vendors bidding on government contracts?
You know, you really should learn to use googleLet's see:
- IBM gets German government contract
- MandrakeSoft wins French government contract
- IBM sells Linux to Air Force & other government agencies
4. Do the opensource vendors support 24/7 priority support?
Looks like IBM has you covered again. What about public safety? (fire/police/ambulance/etc.)
I'm pretty sure most fire/police/ambulance services operate 24/7 too.For the type of service you want for a system with Linux machines, I think IBM probably is the only way to go at this point.

subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use
annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some

Partially vindicated... but still an ass shat...OK, I found the article.
"SecurityFocus.com, which is in the process of being acquired by Symantec, said it had already deleted a copy of the C source code from its Web site at the request of SnoSoft."
I knew I wasn't smoking crack yesterday. However, they allegedly pulled it at the request of snosoft, not HP.

It was a Compaq bozo who made the threat...
According to the C|Net article, the manager who made the threat (Kent Ferson) came from the Compaq side of the HP/Compaq merger. So I guess you can blame that loser Fiorina for bringing clueless bozos to dilute the HP way...
