Re:Constitutions CAN be useful, if honored.
No. In the U.S. cartoon images ARE protected by the First Amendment. This was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2002. (Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition, 535 U.S. 234 (2002)). Sometimes our Supreme court DOES get it right!
Just don't take them over the border to Canada...

Before you go rushing off to support JMS...
Consider the man's idiotic self-justifications for his work on "Before Watchmen" despite Alan Moore's non-participation.
Shorter JMS (to clarify, a paraphrase of his meaning rather than a direct quote):
"See, people get fucked in this industry all the time. It's the nature of the business. The creators of Superman got fucked. The industry could fuck me if they wanted to. And I, for one, am proud to be one of the dicks DC Comics is using to fuck Alan Moore."
And I say this as a fan of Babylon 5, and with no particular familiarity with or affection for Moore's work.

Re:Why is CP illegal?
Canada does.
Relevant quote from the link:
"Presumably based on Canadian statutes that treat any sexual images of characters that appear to be under 18 as actual child pornography, the images they discovered were deemed child porn and the man was charged accordingly."
In this case, the pictures weren't even of actual people. So you can even be prosecuted for possession of images of cartoon adults that appear to be under 18.
And what if you were browsing porn and didn't realize one of the images was actually a 17-year-old who looked like she was over 20? I don't approve of child porn, but there's a VAST difference between a sexy nude photo of an older teen (and good luck actually telling if she's 17, 18, or 19...) and an 8-year-old being raped.

Order of the Stick
People seem to be focused on the piracy aspect of the story and I focused on the 'fan' aspect. Something that is going on with Kickstarter as of this week is Order of the Stick, a free online web comic, that has blown away its goals multiple times in the first week of the kickstarter. That is the power of fans. The product is free on the web, but yet fans are tripping over themselves to get out of print material back in stores.

Re:I don't normally condone vigilantism....
Freedom of speech has limits, something that has been shown time and time again. Phelps crossed that line.
Freedom of speech shouldn't have limits, despite the disagreement from the courts. The only way to cross that line is to by moving to action beyond speech, i.e. violence. The best way of dealing with Phelps and his church isn't by curtailing their freedom of speech, it's by making use of that right yourself.
The people at comic-con had an incredibly peaceful, classy, and humorous way of making the WBC's protest irrelevant. When people show off their ridiculous intolerance, demonstrate to others how ridiculous they are by making fun of them. It works, and nobody's rights get trampled on.

maybe she wants a piece of the action
maybe she wants to cash in on "Steampunk Palin" while some people are still able to keep their food down.

Re:Great idea.
The best counter-protest signs I'd seen were from the attendees of Comic-Con this year when the Westboro Baptist Church (The "God Hates Fags" guys) protested the event:

Re:!change
Well, I don't know about them, but I voted for Obama even though I figured he was full of shit, and buddies of mine who are ultra conservative did as well. Why? Two words: Caribou Barbie. The thought that the Alaska Blunder Woman was a bad cheese sandwich away from being the POTUS? That's some scary shit.
But frankly since 2000 it has been pretty much hold your nose and flip a quarter. Bill may have not been able to keep it zipped but at least he was not running up deficits from hell. But Palin was a total embarrassment. She seemed to bring out every whacko in the country. Remember how after she would get them riled up the crowds would be so hate filled that McCain would actually have to come out and say nice things about Obama so it didn't look like a white guy leading a lynching party? That is pretty bad.
