Re:Construx
do they still make construx? This site sells every kind of construction set currently made AFAIK but I don't see Construx. I liked construx...it came along when my kids were the right age...sometimes I let them use it too. Mechano was the what the budding ubergeeks used when I was a kid...damn expensive and I haven't seen it around for about a decade.

Erector Sets
I always loved my erector set. I don't know about these new-fangled sets, but maybe they'd be ok.

MANY alternatives to Lego
A local store Massachusetts has a bewildering variety of construction toys...Forget yer kids: Buy these things for yourself and let them see you having a great time with them!

Re:What about girls?
Like masonary and plumbing?
Is this close enough? -
Re:Plastic BubblesI really liked that constuction kit with the plastic bubbles you could hook together.
Sounds like Capsela to me.

The Construction Site
If you're in Waltham, Mass and in the mood for real hands-on construction toys be sure to check out The Construction Site, the only toy store I know dedicated to such things. Who knows, they might even have software, I didn't look.

Just Zoob Redux
It looks a LOT like 'Zoob', but with a better idea for a hinge/crosspiece, and with the lego compatability. My friends who run Waltham, MA's all-construction-toy The Construction Site haven't heard of it yet, but knowing them, they probably will have it in stock as soon as it's available to general retailers.

construx? What about capsela!
A toy is not a toy unless you can take it into the bath tub with you....err... hopefully you are familiar with capsela lest you think I had some other sort of pseudo-submersible toy... er.. ah never mind...

How about Capsela?
This was one cool toy from the early 80's: Capsela. Had hours of fun making boats, tanks and cars, all from the same kit. Each item was a spherical module that could be attached to other modules such as motors, various gearing mechanisms, pumps, clutches....a really good variety of devices.
Now I wonder what happened to that kit that was under my bed?

Use Them All
Personally, I used every building toy I could get my hands on when I was growing up. They all required thinking about building in different ways and all were better suited to different projects. I used Capsela, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, Robotix, Erector Set, Lego, plain wood blocks. I found a site that sells em all (and has pictures of them) called constructiontoys.com.
I also agree with others here who dislike the customization of pieces in sets like lego, etc. Building something interesting used to require more imagination, rather than getting the custom alien space ship kit. Plus, making boats that float out of the red roof lego pieces was fun in and of itself. -
www.constructiontoys.comfor a pretty comprehensive overview of the construction toys you can buy these days (and a place to buy them), check out www.constructiontoys.com.
they have Fischertechnik.
I've bought from them--they're nice to deal with. and if you're in Boston, you can drive out to Waltham to see the stuff in person.

Capsela is even better than LEGO or Meccano
Check out: Capsela
.. at least for kids.
I remember my first Meccano set... I lost a lot of little bits, and the rest rusted or broke.
The problem with LEGO is that it's overpriced for bits of inert plastic, but otherwise it's cool, but not *that* cool.
Capsela on the other had was cheap (at the time), and it was motorised. It also did not rust, and NEVER broke.
I wish I could buy some again, but have not seen it in local stores for some time now...

Modern LegoCheck out the stuff in the technic line recently. The traditional stud-type connectors are still there, but getting more and more scarce. The new system relies a lot on a peg system just like you describe. Check out these sets for some examples (or of course, your local toy store -- if you're in the boston area, I recommend The Construction Site). Also have a look at the "Thoughts" section of Eric Brok's Lego site.
