Combating Cyberfraud
What we need is for someone to create a program, open source of course, where people can create text files of public domain works, submit said works and then those who have the program, can download those works they want and forever have access to them.
There are programs available on the religous side for those works which are in the public domain (i.e. early church fathers, bibles, dictionaries, lexicons, etc), but I don't see any for the non-secular side.
Perhaps if a few started a website and elicited volunteers to help with the code so that the program - lets call it "Free Works", is available for all OS's. Then students, scholars, professors, and the general public could and would have access without having to pay such outragous fees for something that should be free.

Re:SuperJesus?Damn, the first thing I thought when I read the title was "Does it come with SuperJesus?"
I thought something similar and wondered, why would someone want to 3D'ify The SWORD Project? What good is a 3D Bible over plain text? Do the letters float or something?
Imagine my surprise when I read According to the authors it 'strives to provide the world's best introduction to not only OpenGL, but 3D graphics programming in general.' A tough goal to achieve." When did God get into OpenGL? -
Re:Hah.
God demands faith. God does not provide proof, because proof kills faith.
That might be true for what ever deity you worship, but The God of the Bible has defined what sort of faith He requires: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)) -

... they killed Jesus, remember.First, it was roman soldiers that crucified Him. Secound, according to the Bible (the book that Falwell based his beliefs on), the Jews did not kill Jesus any more than everybody else did (and still do). (If limited atonement is correct, only the Christians did it) The Bible says that "...he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."* From this it is clear that it was our sin, past, present and future, that killed Him. I should also add that He Himself choose to die in our place. The Jews did not force Him. What made Him do it was His love: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."** (remember that He is God, compare John 1:10 and Genesis 1:1)

Re:"this list isn't strictly software projects"
A little more on topic, http://www.bibletime.info/index.htmlBibletime and http://www.crosswire.org/index.jspSword are open source, software, and decent projects at that.

how about Jsword for us heathens?
http://www.crosswire.org/jsword/
"The J-Sword Project is a group of programs that work together to bring Bible study to a wide range of people using the Java platform. It includes Bible Desktop, a desktop based Bible study tool."

Playing into [ungrateful] hands
"That's because traditionally, with a few notable exceptions, client-side Java apps suck. They're clunky, slow, and they look like arse."
Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Guess I better stop downloading F/OSS software like these.

[There's a LOT of java software out there]

And the fun thing is that on SuSE, Java Web Start is already set up. Click on the JNLP links and it'll automatically download, and set up (Warning some are large downloads).

Re:Extinction level event?Gen. 1:8 -- "God called the firmament Heaven." The firmament is simply the air between the clouds and the ocean.
I don't know how you can say, "a literal reading of the bible cannot be reconciled with science" when you haven't bothered to even do a Google search regarding your "favorite question."
I think that it would be impossible for anyone to "reconcile" the Bible with science without having an attitude of sincere, intense study of the relevant subjects.
I'll give you a few places you can check out if you'd like.
- "firmament" in Easton's Bible Dictionary
- Is the raqiya' ('firmament') a solid dome?
- Genesis FAQ
- Online Bible search - many translations
- Online Bible dictionaries
- Online Bible commentaries
- Open source free Bible software - Linux, Windows; many translations, dictionaries, commentaries, etc.

Re:PLUG AND PRAY
I use CrossWire Sword Project myself. I like the program in Windows, and you may download lots of modules including a KJV Bible with Strongs numbers and Strongs dictionaries. In Linux I have BibleTime for KDE but it's not as good...

Re:Death Cookie
Will,
Thanks for your comment.
For more on the textual problem in the Greek NT, check out James White's The King James Only Controversy. White takes on Chick, and minons like him. ISBN.nu is your friend.
What Chick and his minons don't tell you is that there are four Textus Receptuses floating around. One is the Scrivener Textus Receptus, which is dated 1894. Scrivener tried to bring the Textus Receptus back to the Textus Receptus the KJV translators used. The other is the Stephanus Textus Receptus, dated 1550, which (I think) was a spin off of Erasmus' Textus Receptus. The third is the Beza Textus Receptus which is dated 1565-1604, which (I think) was used by the KJV translators. The fourth is the Eramus Textus Receptus, which is dated 1519 and is the first Textus Receptus.
This evidence shows the problem with Chick's viewpoint. If you believe the Textus Receptus is the one and only, then which Textus Receptus? David Cloud (i'm not kidding, that's his real name!), holds some of Chick's views. He wrote an article on this topic called "WHICH EDITION OF THE RECEIVED TEXT IS THE PRESERVED WORD OF GOD?" He didn't opine on which Textus Receptus was The One And Only(TM). Instead he took the cop-out of telling to trust the KJV in textual matters! The site is currently offline. I will be more than happy to send you the piece. My address is in my /. profile.
If you want to see both Textus Receptuses, check out the Bible Gateway. Both Textus Receptuses are there plus the Westcott-Hort Text (which has the Nestle-Aland 27/UBS 4 varants embedded). There's also software that you can download to compare the Textus Receptuses at Crosswire. It's FOSS, and is available for GNU/Linux, Win32, and Mac OS X.
I wish you well. -
Re:Legal?
I've got the American Standard Version at my site. However, I recently learned that the majority of online Bible sites have a humongous number of errors in their ASV (we are all using the same etext). I recently found the SWORD project, which appears to have a good ASV etext; I intend to extract it and put it on my site, soon.

Re:Why is Linux so anti-Lindows?
"Sure, mom can use Linux (except for her bible stuff and her preferred Mah Jong app)"
GNOME 2.x Mahjongg seems quite reasonable to me, and is quite sharp looking too. It should be included in your gnome-games package, er, that is, should hopefully be in the default install.
GnomeSword seems to be a fair enough tool for home Bible reference and study. There is a similar Windows version which she can use before switching to help determine whether it can meet her needs.
GnomeSword anyhow still uses GTK 1.2 (right?), which may or may not for your distro mean a somewhat inconsistent look and feel, so you might find the KDE equivalent, BibleTime preferable.
"The difference is a basic usability in Windows that is intuitive for those of us that *only know* Windows."
Have you tried the latest from Red Hat and Mandrake? If you haven't recently, and you would like to switch, keep trying, or see if you can find a friend or relative who can help you out. -
Re:Question, teacher
Actually, I think some translations of The Bible are copyrighted.Remember, translating the ancient texts accurately requires huge teams of scholars.
For example, the Good News Bible.
These people seem quite upset about it.
