Re:WTF
The Académie continues work on the ninth edition, begun in 1986, of which the first volume (A to Enzyme) was published in 1992, and the second (Éocène to Mappemonde) in 2000.The finalized ninth edition is expected to contain more than 15,000 new words.
The Académie Française actually does a bit more than just build a dictionary. Among other things it also issues language recommendations which may or may not enter general parlance (notably with the new term database at http://franceterme.culture.fr/FranceTerme) and collates misc. linguistic works.
200 million people speak French in about 60 countries. A lot of them want to keep understanding each others even though they are fond of their local specificities.

Re:He not only made the tube,Is that the museum where we see Casaubon hiding at the beginning of Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum? Where the TRES have their rite? It is; it's were in the beginning the young couple is discussing the Pendulum experiment in rather cold terms, and where TRES makes the final rite with Belbo... I have found this link amongst others, wich both mentiones the pendulum an a "Découvre le béton" workshop... something aking to the "Amazing History of Metals". Coincidence? Ha!
Great catch by the way. -
Re:Think of OSS as language
except for the Academie Francaise. This part of the French government controls which words are 'officially' to be used in France, and has been very aggressive about keeping English terms (such as email and computer) out of the language. It is against the law to use the word 'email' in France.
This is indeed what the trolls post on the soc.culture groups on Usenet, unfortunately it is false :- The Academie Francaise isn't part of the gouvernment. They are an independent body whose main function is creating a reference dictionnary and handing out litterary prizes. See their site.
- "Computer" was never used in France, "ordinateur" was coined in response to a request by IBM (see posts below for details)
- Using "email" isn't and has never been illegal. There is a recomendation that "courriel" is used in its place for official documents issued by the government. The term was coined by the canadians and inserted into the language by the "Commission generale de terminologie et de neologie which is part of the Ministry of Culture.
You may now continue trolling, thank you for your attention.

ml
The previous official french word for e-mail was "mél". See http://www.culture.fr/culture/dglf/cogeter/2-12-9
7 -mel.htm.However, nobody uses it. And most people don't even know what it means. At least, "courriel" is more obvious so it will probably have a better future.

Re:A testament to civilization
Actually, people have been wasting time since prehistory. What purpose was served by the cave paintings at Lascaux? I'd assume that those folk were generally preoccupied with the question of continued survival.
Look at it this way--any time spent creating the spacecraft was not spent in procreation, though that may not have been entirely due to a proactive decision on his part. Consider the long-term resource savings! -
Re:local cultures and thought control
eventually? One word: France!
They have a Ministry for Culture and Communication, dedicated to promoting and watching over French culture. Its most obvious effects are in the French film industry, which (excepting the occasional crossover blockbuster) is heavily funded by the government to be "by the French, for the French"
Still, I had no problem getting a Royale avec Fromage on the Champs d'Elysee "un weekend"..!

Complain loudly here (at least)French should complain in the guest book of the Ministere de la Culture http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/livredor-accue
i l.htmPlease stay polite, and don't spam it, it will be much more effective that way.
Madame la minstre Tasca can be joined via http://www.culture.fr/culture/comment-ministre.ht
m Le premier ministre Jospin can be reached at mailto:premier-ministre@premier-ministre.gouv.fr . As there are 3 elections in the next 18 month, telling him the opinion you have on the issue and how it will impact you vote can be pretty effective.
Resistance (which is not futile) is at www.vachealait.com
If you know other resources, please reply. I don't want SONY/EMI/VIVENDI etc, getting money each time I burn a FreeBSD CD
Thanks.
Cheers,

Re:Hard Drive tax
In fact, the tax is about 3.7 FF for a CD-RW, about 0.5 US$. You can find the draft at this page: http://www.culture.fr/culture/actualites/politiqu
e /copie-privee.htmAt the end of the page, there is a table with the price in FF (divide by 7 approx. for US$).
I do not agree with this tax for this real reason: the author society that will redistribute the money is one of the most unclear and devious company, they have no clear accountability, it's awful.
I also do not agree with the principle, but life is full of compromises.
That's all, no need to bother you any more.
