...we need (peaceful) war :)as we run the cyberian rc5-56 effort some years ago (the good guys of distributed.net beat us that time
:)) - it was very fun and interesting. Ever since that we have been every now and then looking for something similar to do. However, I personally and the rest of us either did not see much point in putting a competing effort on rc5-64 or rc5-72 either. Distributed.net does a great effort in there :)Anyway, I think all of these efforts would benefit from some real competition. You can't believe how rewarding it was to race with distributed.net and the other efforts and to see who can develop best optimized code - for example.
But to build that spirit of competition (without doing duplicate work) between the efforts, we would need some fresh and new (reasonable, interesting) idea for: what to crunch? Any ideas there? I am sure the guys at distributed.net and the multiple other efforts would love to see the same "fighting spirit" again as well
:) And as result, I believe everyones code will be optimized much faster and new ideas will be created faster, more people will be interested to join...but: what to crunch, what would be really really interesting? :) -
Instead, Spam (as we know it) is doomedLately there has been many efforts that seriously help the problem with spam. One of those being Spamnet - today there are already almost 200 000 spamnet clients installed and as the result almost all of the spam gets classified as junk and never consume your time.
Then, I should ofcourse plug this Openchallenge submission about Learning e-mail classifier:The use of a naive bayesian algorithm in automatically filtering spam and classifying e-mail has been discussed and also implemented in the past. Implement an automatic e-mail classifier system which works together with an IMAP server. The system should: a) constantly refine the database used to classify messages either by periodically re-analyzing the IMAP folders or by tracking each incoming message and periodically checking to which folder the user actually moves each message. b) assign each incoming message an extra header item which contains the path of the IMAP folder where the message belongs according to the classification algorithm.
Also, you could also mine your site for smammers like this.
So, my point is that just during last two years the spam problem has exceeded so much that there is enough interest in fighting it seriously. Spam will die.

It should be clearly labeledThere's a lot of open-source code around, and generally, it's quite easy to find. Finding open source data, on the other hand, can be quite a pain
When you go to Google to find software to fill some specific need, you already know quite clearly how to search. The problem with finding "open data" is that there currently is not any commonly used clear label on such texts, research and articles. I tend to mention that the content is released under the GNU Free Documentation License or FDL when I want to release something to be freely utlized by anyone. One such case is for example the Amazon Discoveries series. Not that it would be any useful for anyone
:) This problem is a bit related to the problem of releasing your idea or concept under such license - there does not seem any clear practise how to go on about this :: what to do if your idea might be unique but you do not want to patent it. We have that exact problem with for example the Openchallenge concept submissions. Any ideas on what practises to use in that case would help us out. -
Re:As this will asked anyway, from the FAQSETI currently does integrity checks by having the same unit calculated several times then taking the most common result..
Yes, and imagine the case of the distributed crypto-crack efforts such as those run by distributed.net and by us too for the rc5-56 challenge (the cyberian.org effort). Imagine, that someone fakes the results for just the keyspace, which contained the correct key - and that this forged result passes the controls. Now, as result the progress counter might reach 100% and you still did not find the correct key. The only solution would be to calculate the whole keyspace again. I mean, even if you check the integrity - calculate same task for 10 times for example - still, it is possible that the forge gets through. Ofcourse, there is a number of counter actions to make the forging harder but still, I think the key problem is still unanswered. Or, if someone has some good fresh pointers about this subject, please post them here

Our experiences from running the rc5-56 challenge
run at cyberian.org some 4 years ago was that people will do anything to get their team/name listed in the first page of the statistics. Some of the people were even arrested by police for hacking into machines to make them crunch rc5 for their name. And it seems this trend is only getting worse. This is kind of sad, because it is not very good for the reputation of such efforts.

Custom solution for a specific task? The article does not seem to mention whether they use a ready made grid/distributed computing platform or are they whipping up it themselves? Or am I blind? Does anyone know more about this? And what do they mean by:
"The computers will be linked by the Internet, but involve a simple networking system, Lu said. Keeping the linkage as simple as possible was the goal."
Based on the article I would assume that they have made a custom tailored system (if not kludge) for one specific purpose ("for calculating energy shifts as two molecules are manipulated around 3-D space") - and not a platform which could be easily tailored and managed to solve different kinds of tasks with different kinds of relationships between the tasks.
Ohh, I could also link my grid computing links.

Imaginary data transfer
The Naqoyqatsi concept almost beat my utterly amazing imaginary data transfer wireless data transfer method
;) -a groundbreaking innovation. It consists of maxicode encoding data and displaying them as a stream on your display and to be captured by a digital camera to achieve a amazing bitrate of 32000 bps. The results after watching the maxicode show is probably very close to what you get by watching this movie. -

Here is a little collection of grid computing related companies, organisations and projects. If there is something crucial missing, let me know

Copy the business concept from here.

How to make spamming more expensive
I am trying this approach. Make spammers "agree" and subscribe for an "service" which gives them right to spam a spefic unique e-mail address. The subcription and agreement is done by sending an e-mail to this unique address. As the e-mail address is unique, and I got the webserver logs of who "agreed" on the terms. There might be some chance to nail them

Spammer Nailer
I did this sometime ago, Unique Spam Invoicing System, USIS aka "Spammer Nailer". And am really planning to bill the spammers. The idea: spammers collects email by harvesters: this page contains an unique address and a service agreement, which says that by sending an e-mail to the address, you agree to the terms of service, which you can read at the url. And as the address is unique and I got the weblogs, there is atleast even some chance of nailing the spammer.

Real RacersWhy don't you have a look at my Real Racer's insanity as well. Remore (as in REMOTE) controlled cars. Here's an introduction.
Do you think we have reached the climax of reality in gaming? Well, you were wrong so read on. This article contains cooking intructions for games that mix physical reality, virtual world and interaction using techniques and devices available of-the-shelf.

Gridcomputing sites
What could be a better chance to market my grid computing sites list. That's how truly massive computational tasks are to be done more and more in the coming years.

Solution: make money.
How much does reliable 3Mb/s really cost? Their project is already so popular, that it should not be a problem to find ways to make money with it.
When we run the Cyberian RC5-56 challenge we got all kinds of offers from all kinds of companies willing to ship us something, a monster Digital machine for example. And our popularity was minimal compared to them - we had like 1 percent of the amount of clients that they run now.
Why is it a problem in this case? I think that the help that they really need is the services of 1 (one) marketing oriented individual (that's not me) :) -
Extreme parental supervision
This is somehow related to one of my ermmm.. buffer overflows
;) so there. -
/usr/bin/yes/!
Yes, I would say I am doing exactly what I have wanted and still want. Ofcourse there have been days when I have had to do stuff that was not for me (like run the company
;) but you have to do things that you dont like to do things that you like.
However, I don't believe that it could be possible if I would have been working for someone else.
What do I do then? Ummmm... I dunno ;) -
WAP is not WML
It's just amazing to see even technically oriented people making just immensily moronic comments about WAP being dead because "they look bad and work slowly".
Are they braindead? Haven't they noticed that the WAP standard is a large stack of specifications - from low and multiple transport level specifications to the presentation layer. Most people seem to be blurred and think that WAP == WML. The presentation layer is just a tiny piece of the big picture.
So, the presentation layer was not that fancy - so what? Were you around when there was gopher and Mosaic came - was it fancy? (In my opinion yes). So it sucks, now it has been fixed.
Alright. The first ugly presentation layer might have given WAP bad credit, but wait a while and see....you can do a whole bunch of Amazon stuff with it. -
Bad signal
As RedHat might be considered by many people (and especially those not currently using Linux) as the flagship of the distributions this is really bad news.
I am afraid that news like this makes it harder for businesses to adopt Linux. It makes a huge difference to know that your operating system vendor is still in business after 1,2,5 and 10 years.
So, I just sincerely hope Redhat, SuSE and the others get their business going well and start making nice profits.
