Re:not hating but ive never heard of it
There is a pretty awesome isometric interface for nethack, http://www.desura.com/games/vu... or http://www.darkarts.co.za/vult... and it's free

Re:Linux gaming arena?
If you don't like the 1337 ASCII version, try Vulture's Eye

*Cough* Vultures Eye *Cough*

Good thing there're no graphics in Slash'EM
When you can carry, wield, throw, sacrifice, eat, partly eat and refrigerate corpses, when you can turn them to statues or feed them to your pets or put them in tin cans and lob those at your enemies as well, and when it matters whether or not you're wearing gloves, and when rotting corpses can give you food poisoning or turn you to slime (among more beneficial effects), and when mold and fungi grow on them and you can observe vampires drink their blood...
...then the present will finally catch up with roguelikes in one area.
PS: Yes, I know there's Vulture's, and all those tile modes. But really, how can you tell what anything is that way? :} -
Re:Just started
Appears you have to hack em together yourself for a current windows GUI
:(
Strangely enough, thanks to this Slashdot FP rekindling my ancient almost-beaten addiction to NetHack, I discovered Vuture shortly after I posted.
The newest version (2.1.0) actually supports Windows directly, and runs windowed as well (Falcon's would only run fullscreen). You can grab it from here. -
OT: OS X version of Vulture's Eye and Claw here!I know this is slightly OT, but forks of Falcon's Eye - Vulture's Eye and Vulture's Claw (Nethack and Slash'Em, respectively) are finally available for OS X. For anyone who didn't like the QT version, or couldn't get the terminal version to compile or don't have classic, this rocks.
One of the nicest RPGs is finally running on the mac, and is rock-stable! On to YASD!
Before you mod this down, I'd like you to know I have my Powerbook on a table, AND I use pencil and paper to write down my Inventory when I die - cheating as much as I can.
All the hallmarks of tabletop D&D'ing. Don't judge me.

Re:rogue
(Just add graphics for the chars. I am wondering if someone ever thought of generating a Diablo like GUI for the original nethack
:) )Like this?, although not exactly "Diablo" like.

NetHack
Downloading games isn't just for pirates anymore. It's also for adventurers.

Re:Nethack
Unlike most old games, Nethack has remained under active development the whole time, both in the core and in interfaces (plus the Slash'em branch). It's one game that people just don't want to watch die.
It's nice to watch (and help!) the progression from rogue to nethack to qt nethack to Falcon's Eye to Vulture's Eye/Claw and back to Rogue in tribute ;) -

it makes a good first impression
I had to dig a little to find the main main page, because Google didn't come up with a direct link. It's the second hit on yahoo, both searches with "nethack vulture's eye" as the keywords. I didn't try any other engines.
I haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but the first twenty minutes went well (until I fell in a pit). There are a couple minor differences in the default keyboard setups, but for the most part I was able to install it and just play. -
sorry to wander o/t...
but Vulture's Eye/Claw? I'm familiar with a number of spin-offs (prefer vanilla 3.4.3 so far), but not that one.
Actually, I'm not totally dumb: I went to google and here is a link for anybody else who's curious. -
Re:Not true
Exactly - cross platform is the way to go whenever possible. That means choosing cross platform libraries from the start, instead of ones that tie you to a particular platform. As a developer of Vulture's Eye/Claw, I can attest to the fact that we have many players who are Windows users, even though the project started out as unix-only. When our windows builder disappeared on us, we had more than a couple complaints about lagging windows builds of Vultures'
:) -
Re:The future sucks!
And things keep on improving
:).
For those of you who don't know what Nethack is, here's a primer.
