Re:thermoplastic construction
With traditional manufacturing it makes sense to make things in bulk because you need specialized equipment for everything but if you have a general-purpose printer you can just print what you need.
All well and good until you realize that, for a whole keyboard, you pay $6 (or, how about about $0.09 for keyboard switch - electrical stuff included) and for a single 3D printed key cap you pay about $10.
Well, we can ignore the case of exquisitely unique keyboards, can we? -
Re:Reusable...
Where are you buying $1000 cases (since you mentioned the 100x claim).
Made of wood... and brass and glass and what not

Re:Is this applicable anymore?
...interfaces like Android (especially Honeycomb and later) or Microsoft's Metro, things have been taking a sharp turn away from skeuomorphism and decidedly towards an unabashedly digital styling.
Agreed. Call me decrepit, but I reached the point I consider paying for some actual styling.

Re:How do you define better?
If I wanted to type a 10,000 word document or play a complex RPG I'd take that 1995 PC over a smartphone anyday. Sure , the smartphone has much better hardware but from a usability point of view it leaves a lot to be desired compared to PC or any era.
Those usability features from 1995 were compensating for lack of processing power
;-) Oh, and real keyboards cost real money. -

If you get a REALLY big paycheck, you might consider one of these instead:

Re:Playing both sides
This is different. They didn't go out and buy real Gibson guitars and hook them into the game. They went to Gibson and licensed the right to create plastic guitar that looks like a Gibson. There was an agreement signed and Gibson gets some kind of cut. Guitar Hero could of created a generic guitar and not had to do this, but they wanted the Gibson look.
The same thing applies to computers. If I put together my own computers and sell them, I am free to go and buy whatever mouse and keyboard I want and include them with the computer. I am also free to design and build my own mouse or keyboard design. If I want to make a keyboard that resembles say a Datamancer Aviator and sell it as such, then I would need an agreement with Datamancer. Of course, I could always buy a keyboard from them or use a generic keyboard and avoid the need for licensing. -
my personal stempunk favourite..
