Re:ill-gotten gains???
Just to play devil's advocate -- What if its a really crappy movie? One that you, say, value at $5, not the $29.99 the MPAA wants for a new release?
You mean like Paranoia 1.0 a.k.a. One Point O , listing at $24.98 and selling for $21.99 at, but listing at only $9.99 and selling for $5.99 at ? (I shop around.)
OK, so maybe I don't think it's crappy. I liked it, so much that it still sits marked Keep Until I Delete on my TiVo while I wait for the DVD to arrive sometime this week. (The TiVo recorded it as one of its Suggestions, possibly because I told it I liked Primer , also one of its Suggestions.)
Is it wrong to mark as KUID content from a premium movie channel? I'm sure the entertainment cartels would believe it to be so, even though this movie is an independent film. The RIAA claims it owns all music distribution rights, even for unsigned music; I'd expect the MPAA to parrot that. -
Re:Most of TOS can be downloaded from Amazon
Instead of DRM hell, may I recommend Deep Discount DVD? They have the entire TOS for $138 on DVD. Seriously, that's a lot of tv for the price.
I have no connection to the company other than purchasing a set myself about a month ago. -
Re:Wow...
About 30 for HD-DVD http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/format.cfm?classID
= 1
and 25 within the next month for BLU-RAY http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/format.cfm?classID= 2
Not that anyone in their right mind would purchase either since both formats are DRM - Defective Recorded Media. -

Re:Pricing woesA lot of the price of anime comes from the agreements with the companies in Japan. The DVDs run about $45-$50 there and normally contain 2 episodes each. So your talking about $585-$650 for a full series. Yes they normally come out in the US about a year later but wouldn't you think even more Japanese fans would import their favorites series back it they were even cheaper?
Also before you been complaining yes Best Buy and Media Play's price suck. But for your example you can get the new Ghost in the Shell series for $15/each at http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com. Volume 1, Volume 2 so don't buy at the over priced stores, order online if you want deals. So no things aren't bad, they are actually fine.

Re:TV episodes from BitTorrent
2-5 dollars you say? No commercials you say?
How about 14 episodes of Firefly for $35.96 = $2.56/episode?
21 episodes of Stargate SG-1 for $45.76 = $2.17/episode
26 episodse of Star Trek: TNG for $102.00 = $3.92/episode
The list goes on. The prices you want to pay are out there, readily available, already. The only difference is that you have to wait a few days to get the package in the mail.
(not to shill too much more for DDD, but they have free shipping, too) -

Re:Go get 'em Ohio!
Also, unless you're in the state they're in, you don't have to pay them taxes, and shipping is free. So basically the price you see is the price you pay. I buy almost all of my DVDs from them.
Futurama Season 3 $36.59, and Walmart is >$37 (not including tax or shipping) -
Re:Go get 'em Ohio!
As a general rule Deep Discount DVD sucks compared to Target/Walmart.
Let's have a couple of examples:
The Big Lebowski. $5.50 at Target (I got mine for $7.50), $9.53 at DDDVD.
Knight Rider Season 1. $33.50 at Target (Sunday after release), $38.99 at DDDVD.
Cocktail. $5.50 at Target (last weekend), $9.36 at DDDVD.
Yup, DDDVD is good for some stuff (selected titles) if you are willing to wait for USPS delivery. If you are looking for something just a bit more expensive than a rental, Target/Walmart smoke it.

Re:Go get 'em Ohio!
Of course, DeepDiscountDVD.com typically smokes both Target and Walmart's prices and has a FAR biger selection.
I think the general rule of thumb is that if you don't mind waiting, buying things online is far superior. -

DVD buying
DVD Price Search is the pricewatch equivalent for DVDs, but my personal favorite of the bunch is DeepDiscountDVD. It can take two weeks to receive your order, but the prices and selection are generally unbeatable. Free shipping.

Deep Discount DVD
Deep Discount DVD is usually the least expensive place to buy DVDs from. I will say their customer service is really slow so hope your order goes through without any problems. They offer free shipping (US and everything so they're usually cheaper than Amazon too. I've placed several orders with them and have had good luck so far.

How about volume = selection ????Yes and no. Sometimes, the cheaper place IS the better choice. My case in point:
Yeah, they're cheaper than Spamazon, and usually cheaper than buying it at the local Costco Warehouse. But they have stuff nobody ELSE seems to have, and at a fair price. Foreign. Genre. Anime. They have it. My kids just discovered Miyazaki. Got 'em all from there. About the only thing they don't handle is PRON. But there's enough of that, free, on the Net. .
.No, I don't work for them, not even sure where they are in realspace. But I buy 60-80 bucks worth of stuff from them every month, because THEY have it. . .

And the real joke...
...is that the DVD version of The Wall is available for under $20. You can probably even find it at Best Buy for less than the price of the CD.
CD - 44kHz 16 bit audio, soundtrack only, $33.
DVD - 96kHz 24 bit audio, entire movie, $20.
Now that's what I call overpricing.
Don't bother to buy soundtrack albums for movies like Yellow Submarine, Koyaanisqatsi, Stop Making Sense or The Wall. That's a sucker's game. You can buy the DVD for less, rip the audio, and burn your own CD. -
Re:Yeah Right
My online CD retailer of choice these days is DeepDiscountCD. Their prices are very reasonable and, best of all, shipping is free -- that alone often puts them $2-3 cheaper than their competitors. (They also have a sister-site, DeepDiscountDVD, which also has free shipping.)

Finding Cheap Legit Animeand b) obtaining imported products, especially soundtracks, are _prohibitively_ expensive. This isn't like "go to Tower and pick up the CD for 15 bucks"
... these things run 30 and 40 dollars for the real mccoy. Not true, you just don't know where to look. If you're going to Amazon to pick up your Anime you're out of your mind. Try a place like Deep Discount DVD . I picked up Berserk (the most awesome series ever!) for $18.00 there (4 episodes on the disk) when it's $27.00 at Amazon. Same thing with the Kenshin Samurai X OVA - TRUST & BETRAYAL; $18.00 at Deep Discount DVD and $25.50 at Amazon. Amazing movie by the way.
I've also seen the same thing with Anime posters, toys and soundtracks - you just have to do a little work looking around; if you do you'll find good deals.

Re:Where to order FOTR Extended
I just ordered mine from Deep Discount DVD. I chose this site based on a search from DVD Price Search.

Re:Grrr...
Oops, wrong commercial link there. No need to support megazon, especially when they're not even the cheapest.
Koyanisqatsi and Powaqatsi bundle
Baraka (original edition) -

Here's Bargains
There's a virtual cornucopia of information on finding cheap DVD's on the 'net.
First, check out The DVD Talk Forums for listings of cheap DVD's everywhere. My favorite is the thread on Columbia House, and how to purchase 7 DVD's from them for less than $10 each.
Then there's another personal favorite, deepdiscountdvd.com which routinely has the best prices on the 'net - and they challenge you to find cheaper prices, and they'll beat them.
For other bargains, I check TechBargains.Com several times a day. Often they'll have insane bargains you could easily miss. Like the two Handspring Visors I picked up - for free after rebate, I might add - because they were posted on this site. -
