Yeah, that might work. But that means they would've had to spend the entire previous day carefully laying out all those cartridges and associated triggers. That's enough activity to draw unwanted attention.

There are a few in use currently in Iraq. There is the Talon which can fire many different weapons (M249, .50 cal, M4A1, M24, etc). They are very accurate, more accurate than any soldier. Every EOD team seems to have one of these which they use to detonate IEDs.

UAVs are everywhere and are common place in almost all operations. There is the Predator, which when armed with the hellfire missile system can be very leathal and the little Raven which can be utilized at the squad level. The new Viper Strike bombs, which are starting to be depoyed on UAVs, are very usefull in urban situations where you need to take out the enemy without harming innocents in say, the next room. This is a big development because the "insurgents" like to take shelter in mosques, schools, and hospitals, etc. The new Hardstop bombs help in this situation as well (but I do not think they are carried by UAVs). Anyways, here is an exellent video/story which mixes captured enemy video with the video from the UAV which nails them. I love UAVs.

Yes, GPS guided mortars.

The British Army pioneered the use of *laser* guided mortars. The US version is called PGMM - Precision Guided Mortar Munition. You laze the target, call for fire, and Johnny over the hill drops a few bombs down the tube in your general direction. The bombs have a guidance package on the nose and moveable fins on the back, giving them a fair amount of maneuverability - just like a laser-guided bomb from a plane.

It's no stretch that you could just swap the laser guidance package out with a GPS package (that's exactly what the US Airforce has done with their laser guided bombs), and use the same firing principle (know roughly where your target is, point the tube in the right direction at roughly the right inclination) to send GPS munitions downrange with *consistent* accuracy. It would be less useful in a military environment than laser designation, but more useful to a terrorist.

I believe this is *way* out of the reach of current terrorist organisations. But 9/11 made people real jumpy. I leave it as an exercise to the reader how GPS guided mortars could be used to really mess up someone's day. Hint: Buildings don't move. And before you say "but regular mortars are just as accurate" I'd say no, they're not - witness the IRA attempt to use mortars to hit 10 Downing Street in the mid 90s. They fired 6 shells, and only 1 hit anywhere near the target, landing in the garden behind the Cabinet room. The story would have been *much* different with GPS guided munitions.

One thing to remember about 'dumb' mortars is that, while they are *reasonably* accurate, you can make them more accurate. - PGMM is an attempt to resurrect the 'copperhead' laser designated artillery round of the '80s. The idea is to replace (expensive) on-call air strikes with organic, indirect-fire munitions with 1m CEP accuracy.

The envisioned weapon. also uses chemical lasers, so you have a very limited number of shots. I'm guessing here, but I'll bet that it would be cheaper to put everyone into a M1 Abrams, which are effectivly invulnerable to RPG, than to build this sort of laser weapon.

There is no way that a system designed to shoot SAM missles (that have flights of kilometers in open air) are going to shoot down an RPG with a range of a few hundred yards.

This is no more effective at winning the war on terrorism than dreaming about 'real' Starship Troopers. Both are just fantasy, but at least Starship Trooper has Denise Richards as an added bonus.

From my experience in an Airborne unit, I always thought the battery situation was pretty scary myself. Part of one of my jobs was to inventory and hand out batteries to operators. I remember we had this new tactical radio that came in. It ate batteries. It took two BA 5590's. Those two batteries would operate only a few hours. As you pulled out the old batteries and put in the new, you would notice the oven like quality at the base of the radio. I don't know if they fully integrated that radio into the force, but I hope they made some changes. Since I wasn't some badass killer, I took it upon myself to jump with a ruck full of batteries. I could only carry maybe 2-4 of those batteries on a jump as I needed the required 40lb ruck for a good exit. They were too light and took up too much volume. If no changes were made then certainly fewer badasses were coming out of the plane. Just a bunch of dumbasses carrying batteries.
