The early keen games may not be sophisticated by today's standards, but they're still fun. And Apogee had a great marketing plan. They would give away the first full game. Then if you liked it, you could purchase the sequels. Hmm...yes a bit like a dealer. ;-)

Appropriately enough, here is the Dopefish, who has a fan page and who's midi music theme will get stuck in your head.

I once saw a 3D model of the Dopefish. It was neat. 3D graphics on my computer on the Internet! What'll they think of next?

Jumping ahead decade and a half... looks like it's just a competitor to Flash. Something else to make my computer run slower than my 486 did as I tried to execute Java applets back in '96...

In the Docks level in a building full of large chemical tanks are many warning signs not to inhale or ingest chemicals. One of them has an urban translation at the bottom, "Do Not Attempt To Get Crunk In This Bee-otch"
There is a secret room in the Highrise level where you can find a sign that says, " OH SNAP - We Beat DNF Out Twice!"

I love games that reward exploration. Sorry folks, but 20 bucks is the price of a nice lunch. If you explore the levels you get a lot more entertainment for your money. I also like Steam - when WinXP becomes unuseable because of the usual bit rot I can easily reload all my Steam games just by logging back in to my account.

seriously, samzenpus, this "sensing faint electrical fields, homing in on the trace of a scent" is ridiculous! or do you feel actual pain if you get hit by a bullet in a videogame?

just because you control a sharks brain, using a joystick, you don't automatically receive his feelings...

Occasional sightings of Pisces swimeatus continue to this day.

what is the best easter egg of all time? None other than the dopefish!! It has become bigger and bigger ever since its first appearance in Commander Keen. It was last seen in the Well of Wishes in quake 2...or so i think.
