Re:Sudden influx of Google is Evil Stories
Shattering of an illusion that scroogle.org has tried to tell us about for so long: Google is evil, like all the rest of them.

Some alternatives to searching, which I think is the most dangerous tool to lose your privacy on: https://duckduckgo.com/ https://www.ixquick.com/ and of course http://scroogle.org/ that has many SSL-solutions, depending on your OS.

They're describing DuckDuckGo
They're describing exactly the sort of results that http://duckduckgo.com/ gives; try the equivalent search for "john battelle", for example: it lists a whole slew of social-networking pages for him in the `social networking bar'. Right after his Wikipedia page and his official website.

Links to Aspartame
Knowing people with multiple sclerosis, I can say it is a horrid disease, you gradually lose your functions over time. I believe there is some links to aspartame intake.

If we can grow stem cells in test tubes and then periodically inject those, is that morally dubious? Like growing artificial meat? Or we go the Bioshock route and go harvesting...

Re:Yahoo?
Duckduckgo is not powered by Bing. The FAQ states:
DuckDuckGo gets its results from over 50 sources, including DuckDuckBot (our own crawler), crowd-sourced sites (in our own index), Yahoo! BOSS, embed.ly, WolframAlpha, EntireWeb, Bing & Blekko. For any given search, there is usually a vertical search engine out there that does a better job at answering it than a general search engine. Our long-term goal is to get you information from that best source, ideally in instant answer form.

Powered by Bing?
-
Re:Yahoo?
Here's the info you're looking for.
They have their own webcrawler, but it's young and doesn't have much data yet, so general search results come mostly from Bing/Yahoo, judging by few queries.
Let's wait and see if it'll grow out of conveniency privacy/aggregation wrapper to become a real competing search engine.

Re:Please no
I resist. Try http://duckduckgo.com/ or http://startpage.com./ It's possible.

Use DuckDuckGo instead
I've pretty much switched to http://duckduckgo.com/
Check out http://dontbubble.us/ and http://donttrack.us/. This would be an example of bubbling, btw.
And if you don't find results (I'd say Google has better results about 20-30% of the time) !g brings that search term to Google.

Re:Really?
yes, DDG does use bing as "a" backend but it is not the only backend.
http://help.duckduckgo.com/customer/portal/articles/216399-sources
I had this pointed out to me just the other day...reading that makes DDG sound pretty good if you ask me, but the reality is that I still haven't used it. Google does what I need and in actual fact I rarely even use search for anything essential...so getting the _best_ result usually isn't as important as getting the _fastest_good_enough_ result.

Re:ddg uses bing?Sources
DuckDuckGo gets its results from over 50 sources, including DuckDuckBot (our own crawler), crowd-sourced sites (in our own index), Yahoo! BOSS, embed.ly, WolframAlpha, EntireWeb, Bing & Blekko.
Added bold for emphasis. Granted they seem to do a lot more than just Bing so the summary is somewhat misleading (a misleading slashdot summary, how shocking).

Re: Firefox vs. Opera
I use DuckDuckGo (mostly). They offer the following very simple directions, for your convenience:
Add to Opera
1. Right-click the DuckDuckGo search box (in the page).
2. Select Create Search.
3. Enter d for keyword.
4. Check Use as default search engine and Use as speed dial search engine (if you wish).
5. Click OK.
It's all right there on the main page, under the search field. -
Meh
I downloaded it and gave it a try, but I'm going to stick with DuckDuckGo. In my experience the results have been as good as or better than Google and if I don't find what I'm looking for, it also gives links to do the search in Google or Bing.
-
New search engine
I found the addition of the DuckDuckGo search engine a nice touch. It's really a nice search engine, which is all that google isn't on the privacy front.

Re:APRS
It's even easier than that. There are fairly inexpensive turn-key solutions for the "appliance operator" ham.
or Duck-Duck-Go the Yaesu VX-8GR radio.
A ham license is a requirement but it can be done by rote learning in one day. There is no Morse code requirement for an entry-level license. It's nothing like old-time ham radio and the typical newbie who gets a license just for APRS can't even tell me his callsign without looking on his paperwork

duckduckgo
I am giving duckduckgo a try, they seem to be better at giving you the results for what you actually typed in.
They also say (who knows if that's true), that they do not track searches, and do not keep records.I had it as the default search engine in firefox for about a week now, it seems to work fine.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/duck-duck-go-ssl-search-plugin/
A couple searches did not give me the result I was looking for, so I used the feedback link, and they got in touch with me very quickly, and they fixed the problem (as it turns out, there was a wrong link on wikipedia which they valued too much).

Re:Both are terrible!
Someone posted a link to this search engine in a previous thread, and I have to say, despite it's faults, it has become my search engine of choice. The results it provides aren't as good as Google's, but the !bang syntax has been incredibly convenient. If I want to search Google I type: "!google search for this" if I want to search Bing I type: "!bing search for that". I can do the same for Amazon, Flickr, Java, Google Images ("!images"), and lots of other sites. The keys typed that I waste on "!google" I save in page loads by not having to go to all of these sites and type in my search there.
As useful as this function is, I do hope duckduckgo.com improves their search algorithm.

Re:Just making sure Google is listening...
Firefox could make the same warning to Google using the search engine DuckDuckGo instead. That way if they get called on their bluff and have to go through with dropping Google to make their point, they won't be doing immeasurable harm to their users and to the net.

Re:Fuck apple.
We have freedom in search, I switched to duckduckgo a while back and I rarely if ever feel the need to use Google's search engine.

Re:What about a supernova?
It would be nice someday if Google would give "2cm/c in ps" the same stature.
switch to https://duckduckgo.com/ or use http://www.wolframalpha.com/ directly...

Re:bing
Try DuckDuckGo
I've been using it as my primary search engine for months now and it's working well. -
Use HTTPSAnother good reason to install HTTPS Everywhere, a browser extension that will redirect your Google searches to the HTTPS version of the site. By checking the certificate presented by the server, your browser can then be sure that it's talking directly to Google. (HTTPS Everywhere also works for a lot of other popular sites.)
Or, if you don't like Google, use DuckDuckGo, which uses HTTPS by default with no need for a browser extension.

LiFi
I love LiFi. Great name. Sadly, it's in use, though not as a networking term. Sadly, the equipment generates light, so it still overlaps some of the lighting equipment using the name. It also could be used to stream movies, and if sold in such a narrow role, could overlap the televisions using the name.
IANAL, so it could just be dead in the water regardless. How does that work? If you're using an original name for a line of meat thermometers, can I use the same name for my gold-colored lunar lander foil? I recall that Goodyear sued Fuji over blimps, and The Beetles sued Steve Jobs' company over Apples, but each pair came to agreements as they were not in the same business, at least at the time.

Re:thanks massachusetts
Does Google have the legal monopoly on the use of deadly force? I don't recall ever getting shot at for doing a search at Duck Duck Go
-
Re:why do people still use google, given tracking?
I want to know what search engine you speak of.
-
Re:Google was great because of the lack of Google+
I've become a fan of DuckDuckGo lately. They have a strong privacy policy (no user tracking), an HTTPS interface, interface customizations, and loads of extra features for developers. My only real complaint with DDG so far is that Google sometimes does better with obscure queries. (And the cartoon duck logo is really stupid.)

Re:Looks like time to find a new search engine
1. Searches for what I want it to search for instead of what it thinks I wanted to search for. Google is always wrong on this one and has been getter worse and worse since they implemented it.
I agree that this sucks.
3. Has an uncluttered interface. One like google used to have.
It's not THAT bad.
4. Has a maps that don't suck. What retard thought it was a good idea to make the scroll wheel zoom?
Wait, we're talking about a search engine. Why don't we stick with that?
In any case, try DuckDuckGo. You may prefer it, and they don't do #1, nor do they track you.

Re:Evil overlord's minions demand more evil.
Try DuckDuckGo
It's a decent search engine and it doesn't track you. -
Search engine over HTTPS without logs of any kind
Search engine over HTTPS without logs of any kind (like Duckduckgo). This way they can't prove the search engine sent the user to the "worst of the worst" site... You still need alternate DNS and/or proxy/VPN to get to the site, but at least sites can still be found with search engines.
What surprises me here is that they want to block the "worst of the worst" and they haven't even mentioned the tired old kiddie porn angle... that is certainly worse than anything! The only way they could surprise me more is by being so honest as naming the future targets: all sites opposing corporations in any way and all sites that spread generic 'anti-american' messages (a.k.a. terrorists). Wikileaks will be one of the first of the sites we know that will be blocked like this... all such sites after that will not even be known to anyone when they are blocked, not listed in searches and not mentioned in media.

Re:No.
It's a recurring escape hatch tactic for followers of the supernatural.
See these examples of people using it to explain why scientific testing of prayer is impossible:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=can+science+test+prayer+matthew+4%3A7I added Matthew 4:7 as this is the verse most likely to be referenced by people using this particular get out of debate free card. Kind of runs contrary the later claim by Jesus that if any two believers agree to something then God will make it happen. We should be thankful that such power doesn't exist; if it did then the universe would have by now been destroyed many times over by some nutjob or a carelessly phrased prayer.

DDG, the search engine that prefers https :)
if you use https://duckduckgo.com/ as search engine, it will give you https links where they exist, like for wikipedia/wiktionary etc etc

Google alternative: duckduckgo
I wish someone - even Microsoft - would come up with a decent alternative to Google.
I've switched recently from google to DuckDuckGo. I'd call it a decent alternative with a few advantages over Google, and a few disadvantages.
All in all, I consider it a slight downgrade, but google was starting to creep me out too much.

Note the qualifiers, pretty much everybody else, is not the same as everybody else. I've personally had much better luck in recent times searching with duck duck go
