Re:Bad idea to link to compromised website?
I know it was pointed out this could be an April's Fools joke, but based on the Devuan developers messages it seems to be actually hacked. Just well timed to pass as a joke. https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/... You're spot on about linking to things like this.

Re: systemd has made Debian unusable for me.
I looked at Devuan. It's not an option. It's an amateurish side project, from what I could see. I can't trust it to be around next month, nevermind a few years from now. At least the FreeBSD project has a mature, helpful community with a long track record of doing great work. I can trust the FreeBSD project. I can't trust the Devuan project.
Devuan has existed for 3 years, since the Exodus Declaration in November 2014.
It is supported by the non-profit organization Dyne.org.
It will be here, tomorrow, next month, next year, next decade. Believe it.You can find the Devuan community:
- On the Dev1 Galaxy forums.
- On the mailing lists at dyne.org
- On IRC, chat.freenode.net in the #devuan channel.Devuan is small compared to Debian, but its users are happy and eagerly awaiting the release of Devuan 2.0 (Ascii).

Re:Something to be aware of:
Tails, probably systemd adds a uuid to something stupid.
Indeed, tails (based on Debian) is infected with systemd.
Try heads instead; it's based on Devuan and has no systemd.
-
Re:unnecessary
as to why fork it? well, not everyone will know how to change from a systemd init to another, for example new users
So Devuan is the distribution for people who can read manuals? That fits with them "discovering" standard mount options for vfat and being so proud of that.

Re:Additional info
switch from SysVinit to systemd
Yeah, that freaked out the Devuan paranoids https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/20160127.151137.ab4c9937.en.html
The release notes tell you exactly why they're OK with systemd:
"+ Sandbox many services using Linux namespaces and make them harder to exploit.
+ Make the launching of Tor and the memory wipe on shutdown more robust.
+ Sanitize our code base by replacing many custom scripts."Maybe that will change if a backdoor or serious security vulnerabilities are discovered, but until then, one need not be afraid.

All those messages?
https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/list/dng.en.html
Yeah, that's a load of messages.
Not.
And, by the way, could someone please explain what Devuan is trying to do? I've heard they want to make a Debian distribution that doesn't use systemd. But that already exists, it's called Debian Jessie.
-
Re:Choice is good.
You might have even gone the extra mile and subscribed to their mailing list where you would see actual progress being made.
I read the DNG archives. Can't exactly say I see a lot of "actual progress". But since the task they have taken on is more or less trivial (Luke seems to have done it on his own) I don't know what I'd expect to see.

re all,
Here is a pre-alpha sneak preview of Devuan at the current state of
affairs. It is my valentine to Franco: despite we probably never met in
person, I love him. He is really dedicated to this project and putting
hard work in it. I also fell in love with another VUA, whose name I

have another more public release soon :^) Let it be a private valentineAlso please note that this is not yet rebranded, so it says Debian

<markdown> markup in HTML
shamelessly putting forward a young project of mine but look, here I'm using markdown (piped to anything, pandoc works fine) inside HTML documents and in multiple blocks throught the document.
webnomad is a minimal implementation to use <markdown> </markdown>inside a plain html and bootstrap styled website. I hope this inspires someone. I'd advocate for markup tags inside HTML6 eheh -

I think I still have the old 300 baud acoustic coupler modem lying around somewhere.

FREEEEE currently works with BLAG and Fedora-9 packages (I'm using it on my 900 eee), but is not actively mantained as we don't have so much time for it. Also the website is down.. yes we know

Re:audio and video
I quite agree. In fact I have been working in this area for the last 5 years, trying to get projects like LiVES, videojack, Weed/Livido and OMC off the ground. However, there is no funding for this to be found anywhere - I have applied to literally dozens of groups, including the FSF, google and other places, but nobody seems interested in free standards in multimedia.
Anyway, you can check out some of these projects:

And now it's time for Zatoichi!
And now it's time to code Zatoichi: http://idiki.dyne.org/wiki/Zatoichi !
Zatoichi is the windows virus, which installs a GNU/Linux distribution and
spreads itself. It was proposed two years ago.
Now, with "goodbye-microsoft", implementing Zatoichi is a piece of cake ^_^ -
The correct answer was FreeJ
how can no one else have suggested FreeJ ? http://freej.dyne.org/
it's perfect for the job ! it's a scriptable realtime video mixer
you add media (text, an image, a video, a video stream, a video capture card or a dvb card) each is a layer
you can position, resize, change tranaparence or any of the layers
it's the perfect video frontend for a video station ! -

Re:I'll use it when it supports ASCII Video Chat..
I did some research and I think you could do it with this live-cd:
http://ascii.dyne.org/?info=description
-I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing that there is probably a telnet client on there.
-Ftp push technology is supported, to publish your hascii feed on your online webserver: that is implemented using a simple C code which wraps execution of your unix ftp client.
-It can output to an HTML page with a meta-refresh tag so that it is constantly updating the image.
So, then theoretically, people could even view your webcam with lynx!
P.S. I was mostly kidding about the ASCII webcam feature. But it would be pretty funny to support this, now wouldn't it... -
All in one solution
Perhaps you should download the Dyne:Bolic
.iso
many streaming solutions, open mosix enabled to turn your outdated network computers into a clustered supercomputer, incorruptable system disk(live cd) and its free, setup and ready to roll
http://dynebolic.dyne.org/ -
Re:Check this:
I've never had much luck with otto. I have used Icecast to relay ogg files which were streamed from Ices or mp3s from Muse. I'd simply replace "stream" with a dedicated client. You can also broadcast/mix "live audio" (station ids) into the stream using Darkice. I've can also recommend Shoutcast.
I've used the above and am confident you can build a solution around them. Freshmeat shows tons more. -
How about a bootable media studio? for free?

dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives as a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, having automatically recognized most device and peripherals: audio, video, TV, network cards, firewire, usb and more; all using only free software! ...
Some interesting features:
* user friendly, intuitive and funky desktop interface
* full of creative tools for audio/video multimedia production
* no need to install, partition or change data on harddisk
* it will work even if you have Micro$oft Winblows
* automatic hardware recognition and configuration: network cards, sound cards, BTTV video cards, firewire, USB devices and more...
* all harddisks are mounted and fully accessible
* works on old pentium1 as well on XBOX game console
* can save your data and settings in one encrypted file on your harddisk or usb storage device (nesting)
* does automatic clustering with other dyne:bolic on the net, to join the CPU power of multiple computers
* handcrafted by experienced software artisans making their own applications since years: dyne:bolic is not based on any other distribution, is unique!
Applications included
The graphical environment is XFree86 with WindowMaker which offers a fresh level of interaction which distincts dyne:bolic from other common graphical environments.

Some background
Just in case there are still some Slashdotters who do not yet know dyne:bolic, please let me quote dyne:bolic website:
"dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives, being a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, all using only free software!"
"dyne:bolic is a GNU/Linux distribution simply running from a CD, without the need to install anything, able to recognize most of your devices and periferals: sound, video, TV, network cards, firewire, usb devices and more."
"It is optimized to run on slower computers, turning it into a full media station: the minimum you need is a pentium1 or k5 PC 64Mb RAM and IDE CD-ROM, or a modded XBOX game console - and if you have more than one, you can easily do clusters."
Therefore, as you can clearly see, asking about dyne:bolic should be the very first question a self-respecting journalist would ask in any interview "on Linux art and usability." Otherwise such an interview is not even worth the screen it is printed on. For more interesting informations please visit dyne:bolic and media activists websites. There are many artists already using dyne:bolic. More informations about "GNU GPL free and opensource software by a rastafari programmer lost in babylon pioneering multimedia on GNU/Linux since 2000" can be found on the Rastasoft website. I believe Metin Amiroff should include the above informations in the next interview. I might add that simply googling for Linux art and following some links before making the interview might have found dyne:bolic in the first place. We certainly need more articles and interviews on the subject.

Answer about dyneFrom http://www.dyne.org/faq.php:
One dyne is the force required to cause a mass of one gram to accelerate at a rate of one centimeter per second squared in the absence of other force-producing effects; A dyne is 100.000 times a newton.
It's a concept defined by Heraclitus, a greek philosopher born at Ephesus around 540 B.C., which once also said that "much learning does not teach understanding".

Re:One thing that's missing hereYou have made my point.
I argued that we should be hesitant to expand state power, because historically this power has been used to stifle dissent and political opposition.
About the Indymedia incident, the police obtained the supena fraudulently,
claiming that Bush's travel plans were posted to the web, thereby hurrying the supena through on national security grounds.
(no such itinerary was posted).
requiring the source of a news media story requires personal review by the Attorney General and proof that alternative methods wont work. None of this was done in this case.
the gag order on Indymedia was an abuse of govt. authority, since it requires at least that US laws be violated (no US law was violated). The gag order was later repealed on these and other grounds.
Lefties seem to have trouble realizing that the law is the law, and if you want to fight it, do it properly from within the system.
It seems that you don't think that the laws need to be followed, or at least that the govt. need not follow its own regulations. This is the kind of abuse of power that those of us who care about freedom of the press are worried about.
BULLSHIT. Even some of the anarchists and communists there acknowledged that any "infiltrators" were few and far between, and that THEY were responsible for trashing the city.
oh..so only "a few" infiltrators are ok, huh? I don't want any infiltrators, thank you. Because I don't think that the govt's job is to break up protests it doesn't agree with. Are you beginning to understand why some of us are suspicious of state power?? Btw, the 600 neo-nazi infiltrators were videotaped talking with the police. They wore black uniforms and gas masks and were widely reported to commit most of the violence. Details here.
I have no doubt those carabinieri would have been killed by those thugs if the police hadn't DEFENDED themselves.
I'm sure you have no doubt of many things, but a G8 inquiry into the killing as well as eyewitness accounts contradicts you. In fact most of the violence was perpetrated by the police on the demonstrators (see above or do a simple google search. Le monde also has good coverage.)
Typical lefty doublespeak..
If you think that the Genoa protest was about "smashing the state," then I am horrified at your ignorance. There were 300,000 mostly peaceful demostrators there, who were attacked, beaten with baton clubs, tear gassed, and infiltrated by black masked police agents. They were protesting serious issues of our day, such as what power private investors have to nullify local laws, wether nations will be forced to adopt new IP laws, what power a nation has over its currency, and wether committees of beaurocrats will be able determine how a govt. chooses to spend its money. If you have any idea of the nature of the protests, of the NGO's, working groups, or organizational drives which went on during Genoa, then you would be embarrassed by your accusation.
But my post was not really relevant to which side of the "globalization" debate you fall on, although I seem to have pushed a hot-button with you with that example. I was citing examples of abuses of state power (you were unable to counter any of my other examples). Specifically, the dangers of the ATA in expanding the definition of "terrorist" to include civil disobedience and protest. You just made my point perfectly in this line:
This is why you're seen as terrorists - because you are
First of all, Mr. Anonymous Coward, I am not a terrorist, and the fact that you can so blithely call me one, in these times, because of my words illustrates exactly what we are fighting against. The 300,000 in genoa were not terrorists. "lefties" -- whom you know so well -- are also not terrorists.
.. you like to throw around justifying the Taliban sheltering of bin Laden while his followers kill THOUSANDS. .
I've never justified the Taliban in sheltering bin laden. It seems that if I don't agree with whatever war rhetoric you happen to favor, then I must automatically be on the side of the enemy, in your mind. Maybe, like Bush's press secretary said, I had better "watch what I say". Is a twinkle of revelation entering your mind why many of us are concerned about the lack of debate or endagerment of our freedoms?
Just be lucky you live in AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where you can spew your totalitarian bullshit with impunity, while right-thinking people freely ignore and refute your sick ideology.
Yes, America *is* the land of the free and the home of the brave. But we have to share this country with you, Anonymous Coward. And you are trying to make it less free, with your "totalitarian" rhetoric:
You attack as terrorist those whose politics you don't agree with.
You defend police violence because the "lefties" "deserve whatever happens" to them.
You equate those who disagree with you as "justifying the Taliban."
But some of us actually want to preserve the bill of rights, specifically, "freedom of assembly" and "freedom of the press". You may be ignorant of how much this country has benefitied from public protest, from the Boston Tea Party (property was destroyed! Terrorism!) to the civil rights marches, to the Pullman strike and 8 hour work days. That's a big part of why we are the land of the free and the home of the brave. But I wont accuse you of being a terrorist, nor will I claim to understand everything in that angry head of yours. All I can do is pray that you are in no way connected with govt. or a law enforcement agency. Also, I can ask of you this:
Don't wrap your totalitarian rhetoric in our Old Glory. It's hard enough trying to care for her with the ATA and DMCA to worry about.
You need not set your flamebait to her stars.
