Re:Does this really matter?Circulation is dropping rapidly, and digital presence will soon be as, if not more, important than print editions.
Say it ain't so!!!
I mean, they (moronic newsies, half-witted pundits, talking headjobs, etc., ad nauseum) constantly yap at us that they are giving us the "content" we demand - yet if that were truly and honestly the case, circulation would not - and continue to - drop.
Obviously, they are feeding us pure crapola (except, perhaps, for those McClatchy newspapers which are about the ONLY newspapers in America which still actually print truthful, non-propaganda articles - also, the various alternative political newspapers throughout the country such as this wonderful example).
I frankly (sorry Newty) can't understand why anyone would read any American news instead of following the more (usually) honest international news or the standard blog spots (Bradblog, Buzzcom, Thinkprogress, Commondreams, Waynemadsenreport, noquarterusa.net, liberalavenger, etc.)

Re:Far far bigger - IT sourcing bug killed a countYou're comparing purposefully designed flaws done by the CIA with Microsoft incompetence? THat's kind of a stretch.
No. I'm comparing Microsoft's deliberate incompatability with competitors to the CIA's deliberate incompatability with Soviet infrastructure.
You should learn more about Microsoft's business practices before dismissing it that quickly.
- Apple alleges that Microsoft created intentional incompatibilities in Internet Explorer 4 and Windows 98 which break QuickTime
- Microsoft VP deiscussed their plan was to plant code into Windows which would "put competitors on a treadmill" and cause the system to "surely crash at some point shortly later." (from the same link)
- Microsoft publishes limited specs about their filesystems so if you want a reliable Database on Windows you either need to use SQL Server or write your own filesystem like Oracle did.
- Microsoft continues to plague the Samba devels with incompatabilities that can only be deliberate.

re: PaxilA link
A cursory google search turned up a class action suit against Glaxo and a whole slew of links associated with it and Paxil. Mostly lawyers attempting to cash in, but the link above was one that wasn't lawsuit-oriented. I think. TBH I didn't read any of it but the headline.
Stating that all of them are addictive was hyperbole, spurred by cynicism towards our drug-makers.

Kexp is partly supported by Mr. Paul Allen's foundation. It used to be a UW campus radio station and as such is supported by tax dollars.http://eatthestate.org/05-16/PaulAllenSei

Re:ICANN, do something correct for once!
This is nothing new for Democrats. I lived through the mid-80's attempt by Tipper and Al Gore to seize control of the recording industry. I'm just shocked how few people remember this.
Politics is about money and control, it doesn't matter what the party is. If anarchists wound up with a majority (how would that work?!), they would turn into money grubbing control freaks. -
Government funded?
I remember hearing something about the Department of Energy giving Disney a big fat grant for brighter fireworks... I wonder if this is related?

Re:God dammit!
Yes, MS employees really do sit around figuring out how to keep Wordperfect from crashing.
Are these the same employees that worked on DR-DOS compatability? -
Re:They've been busy.
"Make sure you're placing the blame in the right place here... terrorism coverage means strong circulation and high ratings, which mean stronger ad sales, which equate to more profit for the media."
Yes, the media perpetuates the fear-mongering of the current administration. When the FBI/CIA-slamming started taking root about their pre-9/11 failures, what was the response? "Arresting" Jose Padilla and claiming to have stopped an "unfolding terrorist plot". Nevermind the fact that Wolfowitz later acknowledged that there was no plot (let alone one in the middle of being carried out), other than some "loose talk". And when the criticism of the Administration's actions began to surface, how did they respond? They raised the "alert level" based on loose, unconfirmed information gathered mainly from admittedly unreliable sources such as Abu Zubaida. From this page, "Zubaida is the source for numerous false alarms of recent months, including FBI warnings that terrorists would attack US banks, US shipping, or residential apartment buildings. Several US intelligence people, under condition of anonymity, have said that Zubaida is just playing with us, feeding false information to create panic."
So yes, we should place the blame where it belongs, so let me clear up what I'm saying: the media perpetuates the FUD, misdirection, and outright lies of the current administration. My mention of that line with 8 FUD-filled keywords was to illustrate a point - look at how people phrase things when they talk, and look for signs of BS, such as stringing tons of the usual FUD keywords together. The media isn't making this stuff up as they go along, it's being fed to them. The so-called "unnamed sources" and "sources within the administration" are usually low-level nobodies who feed lines to the media under the guise of a "leak" or "inside information". Watch The West Wing some time to see the communications dept's spindoctors hard at work sending just the right information (be it true, true but with a spin, or completely false) through staffers to the media. I remember one episode when the CJ was coaching Ansley Hayes, getting her to ask a reporter a question in just the right way as to get the reporter to report what CJ wanted him to. (This was just before the Congressional censure, at the beginning of the investigation by the special prosecutor)

Re:C'mon
Environmentalism is hurting us:
Remember Taxol and the Yew tree?
What about the Klamath Water War?
How about the Firefighters killed by the Forest Service?
Environmentalism is wrong because it holds nature, not man, as the standard of value. -
On the Duty of Civil Disobedience
Anybody ever read Thoreau's On the Duty of Civil Disobedience ? As someone else mentioned, remember the Boston Tea Party?
Seattle's Eat the State has a wonderful article about the media's views on eco-terrorists. Mainstream media obfuscate the fact that these groups act only on property, portraying them as dangerous to individuals, while in most cases, they go out of their way to avoid loss of life or harm to living beings. -
Of course we have black helicopters
Any Seattlite knows that on any given night you are likely to see the black helicopters, despite lack of coverage in our local media. It seem strange that anyone could avoid s sL:JKFnxxxxxxxxx

This is nothing new...
Using suction cups to climb a building has been done before.
also, scaling buildings isn't new either. -
Re:In some ways, it does
This article does an excellent job of explaining why it is dangerous to grant corporations the rights as people.
I don't blame corportions in general, but I do blame the corporations and the lawmakers who push for and allow corporations to manipulate laws in their favor. -
Re:The net lets the disaffected connectI admit, the US screwed over much of South and Latin America. However, the fact of the matter is that we didn't do it for shits and grins; we were fighting the Cold War.
No, the fact of the matter is that the USA was 'screwing over' Latin America well before the Cold War gave us a more plausible excuse. Check your facts next time you spout off about American superiority.
PS. I'm an American too and I'm not exactly proud of all the things my country has done in the past (and continues to do to this day.) We are not neccesarily "the good guys." We are an empire like any other, which happens to carry the biggest stick at the moment.
Fun fact of the day: the term 'gook' did not come out of Korea or Vietnam -- American Marines were using it to refer to natives of Haiti as far back as 1915.
