Better link
Neurocybernetics' website isn't as informative as it used to be. Try EEG Spectrum's instead: http://www.eegspectrum.com/

Some links
Here are some links that I saved quite a while ago. Neurofeedback and Biofeedback devices, resources and such. These links probably aren't much better than what's been posted already, but I stuck them here anyway. Some "Biofeedback Doctors" are better than others, just like any other specialization. Some are totally worthless actually. Just like anything else KEEP TRYING--persistance is the key.

eegspectrum
Check out http://www.eegspectrum.com/ for more info on the technology, training, providers, etc. My fiance is training to administer the therapy and it is built on a sound theory and works for many disorders like ADHD/ADD, sleep disorders, OCD, etc.

Some Reference LinksAn article from AboutOurKids.org
EEG Spectrum is a group of practitioners and researchers. They have a page on the application of the technology for ADHD type treatments. Also a variety of other articles and links on the tech there.
The EEG Spectrum uses hardware and software from NeuroCybernetics which includes some games you play by brain wave control. I tried some of these out a few years ago while looking into EEG tech for Virtual Reality applications.BioFeedback Home Therapy is the home page for a couple doctors using biofeedback.

Neurocybernetics / EEG Spectrum InternationalI worked with these guys a while back. Their techniques work for a number of applications including ADHD, seizures and addiction to name a few.
As a previous poster mentioned, this kind of stuff works by "training" your brain. It does this through biofeedback.
Biofeedback works by presenting data of interest from some sort of sensor array (EKG, or in this case an EEG) in a way your brain interprets on various levels (ex: colors, shapes, etc).
These guys usually do it (afaik) in the context of some sort of non-interactive game (well, it is interactive in that it's driven by your brain, not by a joystick/keyboard/mouse, etc).
Anyways, I don't want to say too much because I'm sure most of it was under some sort of NDA, but here's their sites: This stuff is pretty amazing, you can actually feel it working, as potent (or more) than any medication I've ever popped. But it should only be done by a trained therapist (I tried it on myself a few times because I was sick of playing back the same old recordings and it gave me a bit of a headache, but under the control of a trained tech it doesn't cause much (any afaik) discomfort. Also, unlike another poster mentioned, I was never irritated by the connections, maybe they've improved over time).
It's pretty cool stuff and I hope I have an opportunity to contribute more in the near future.
Disclaimer: I'm just a code monkey that developed some "front-end" stuff (the game side shown to the patient, not the nuts & bolts on the therapist's side). So, take my info in context of just a guy who coded from a spec and attended one of their conferences. -
qEEQ as an alternative to medication
Have you considered neurofeedback? Many of the "fringe" proponents make claims that smack of snake oil, but there is considerable evidence to support neurofeedback as a potential treatment for ADHD.
For example, there are some papers here. -
Re:2 questions
Actually, biofeedback also includes neurofeedback. It's still a science in its infancy, but they use electroencepholgraphs to measure electrical activity in the brain - and can train it to achieve certain certain states. Of particular note to me was training towards what are normally considered sleep states while still conscious (alpha and theta states). These are done via sound cues, but while doing beta (a more typically conscious state) training you kept your eyes open - and the way you knew your brain was 'in the zone' was that a video game would show on the screen in front of you. You kept a horizontally mobile boat within boundaries, or got pacman to eat rather than wilt. I'm sure there are others. It's not Neverwinter Nights but still an interesting experiment in hacking your brain and also relatively legit
But yes - the graphics sucked. -
Re:What I want to know
This guy is the man to ask...
but I think the general consensus is that its all about group synchronization.
Killer whales maintain pod cohesiveness through diving and respiratory synchronization
(humans may have a vestige of this tendency in contagious yawning... quoted from What's new in neurofeedback
I think yawning is also an important way of telling your companions "Time to GET OUT OF MY HOUSE." -
brainwave manipulation
Brainwave 'manipulation' (or stimulation) is actually most interresting technology...
See EEG Spectrum International for 'related' articles. Neurofeedback is less 'intrusive' method than those sound/light devices that are sold for 'relaxation' or other purposes.
or some neurofeedback applications
It is also possible to manipulate brainwaves with TMS (Transcranial magnetic stimulation).. see for example an article about religious experiences and TMS

Less invasive, more sensible
Depression, ADD, schizophrenia, among other mental disorders (not psychological) are caused by unsynchronized signals in the brain. Physiologists and neurologists have been coming at this issue from a surgery/implant point of view and drug point of view for years. Absurdly, neurofeedback techiques can cure these problems, though hasn't been well received. This is similar to how for years we (American medical community) cut people open to cure ulcers, when the Europeans were treating the problem with antibiotics, successfully.

Re:"Sharing" of information
But they do! Yes, I am serious! There's a condition often called 'lazy eye'. Where by one eye cannot focus and/or be controlled as finely as the other. One treatment for this is to cover the 'good eye' with a patch, forcing the 'bad eye' to 'practice'. Now here's the 'videogame treatment' angle; 20 minutes of viewing PONG is worth approximately 8 hours of 'normal' viewing on average. (yes, some videogames have more value in the matter than others) This is scientifically supported but I can also provide personal anecdotal evidence. My niece had a 'lazy eye' and the doctor said the condition was so progressed that it would probably take three years of wearing the eye patch to correct it. But in only 4 months with at least one hour a day of various videogames the doctor pronounced the condition cured. And yes, this 'videogame treatment' was done with the doctors full support.
