Re:It was all about the Mac back then
check out shoebill ( http://emaculation.com/forum/v... ), this guy managed to get A/UX run under emulation. It's pretty cool

Some OS X projects that deserve more attention
MAME OS X. Dave Dribin can no longer work on this, now that he works for Apple. The forum for discussing MAME OS X is: http://forums.bannister.org/
SheepShaver. When Apple dropped support for the Classic Environment, this became our only practical link to the fabulous apps of our youth (or our parents' youth, if you're a young pup).

Re:Windows "was" a competitor?
Yes. It's more like a chimera, with MacOS-like stuff bolted onto NextStep. There are still some things I preferred about the original NextStep, such as the menu arrangement.
Also, MacOS isn't really dead, just emulated. There are emulators available for original 68k and PowerPC varieties, and for multiple platforms (Windows, OS X, Linux). The Mac OS zombie marches on, even on OS X.

Re:Great, but...
When they abandoned Classic they made it so that a tremendous amount of software is no longer useable and will die out.
You can still run a lot of those Classic Mac OS X apps, here's some links for you:

Re:Perfectly usable and powerful with OS X
We are stuck on PowerPC because of an old PowerPC only application, that all of our data is in
You should take a look at PPC emulators for x86. I've actually been playing with SheepShaver on my Windows box and it emulates a PPC well enough on my core 2 duo that I was able to pack up my old PPC Mac systems and run the software I need in there. I'm running Mac OS 9.2.2 though...I have no clue how well it would run OS X. IIRC PearPC was supposed to be better at running OS X when I was reading up on it.
It was a bit of a pain to get it setup initially. The Windows version of the emulator is available here. You also need a working Mac OS ROM image, which you have to find online or dump from one of your PPC Mac systems. There's an excellent torrent available called "Mac Emulation Kit" which contains a lot of good files you might want to get started.

Re:It's nearly unusuable.
Microsoft Word on Mac with a super dual core intel has an irritating delay
Office Mac 2004 (I'm assuming that's what you are using) was compiled for PowerPC, therefore the Rosetta PPC emulation layer is executing the program. Even the best PPC emulation can come close to but is not going to match the "real thing". (http://www.emaculation.com/ppc.php) I run MS Word for Mac 2004 on a G3/266 (OS 10.2.8 w/ 384MB RAM) and it is fairly snappy. Using the MS office suite on Intel based macs will get better when the next version comes out, since it will be a Universal application ("Fat binary"). -
Looks like they're dead?
Have a look at:
http://www.cherryos.com/
Now they are saying: :: CHERRYOS IS NO MORE ::
and they are linking to:

What they hell are these guys doing now?!?!? -
Re:Shame
Sheepshaver for Windows
Actually it has been ported! :) -
Re:I'd like to see a comparison
From what I hear, CherryOS *IS* PearPC (which is GPL). Sounds like they're trying to rip people off with an impossible dream.
CherryOS = PearPC? -
Basilisk II, ShapeShifter is ILLEGAL
If Basilisk II has even a scrap of ShapeShifter code in it (his previous project on the Amiga) then it is ILLEGAL.
http://www.emaculation.com/fusion.php
Microcode solutions were extremely pissed with Christian Bauer. I read somewhere, that to prove he was copying their code for their own competing product, "fusion-pc", Microcode Solutions put dummy code in one of their releases. That dummy code appeared later in ShapeShifter. Can't find a ref at the moment.
When (as Drew alleges) EMPLANT code was illegaly utilized by Christian Bauer (who would later create Basilisk II) to create Shapeshifter, a shareware Mac-on-Amiga emulator, UUI was put out of business. Drew, however, continued his emulation work by founding "Microcode Solutions" on August 24 1996, with two of his co-workers, including programmer Joseph Fenton who is still with the company. Together, they developed "Fusion," a software-only (no costly hardware was required) Macintosh emulator for the Amiga system. -

Re:Speaking of emulation, OT like mad
Actually, PPC emulation on x86 has been added to SheepShaver by Gwenole Beauchesne. Currently its only for Linux and can run up to Mac OS 8.6 with support for some new world roms. More info here.

It'll never happenwe'd be good to go....if someone plugged the OS X interface on top of Linux.
[snip]
1) the stability of linux
2) the price-point of linux
3) the beauty of the Aqua interface
there'd be no reason to ever own a windows machine again. You're right, and Apple knows it. It'll never happen, because Apple also knows that there'd be no reason to ever own an Apple machine again[1].
This would be like OSX on ix86: it could be the death of Apple. You might think that there's a way for them to do it safely, but I doubt that the big cheeses at Apple agree strongly enough to gamble their company on it.
[1] Yes, many Apple loyalists would still buy Apple for the nifty hardware and low-hassle experience. They certainly wouldn't get any NEW customers this way; people who were interested in a do-it-yourself solution would put this on non -Apple hardware. It wouldn't be cheap, but neither is an Apple.

You still need a PowerPC machine
to use this, since it is only binary compatability. So You will still need to buy PowerPC based computers. And who is one of the largest and most noted for selling powerPC based PCs... Apple Computer; so why not just run MacOS X?
I know you can buy third party PowerPC computer, but they are more expense than Apple's machines.
I do appricated their effort, it is probably a good exercise in programming skill.
It would be useful if it was on x86, but there are plenty of problems with that; see

Useful Link
Emaculation.com Is one of the most popular mac-emulation sites on the net and has useful information on setting up Mac emulators (currently, there is no ppc software-based mac emulator
:-( ) -
Re:This sounds useful..
Executor is a dog. so is softmac, the only real choice for x86 mac emulation right now is Basilisk II, which can't do ppc, only 68k. Microcode is working on a hardware/software emulation solution that sounds very promising but it won't be out for a while.
