First Future Post!
Review of First 10K IDE Drive
Posted by
CowboyNeal
in The Mysterious Future!
from the kicking-the-tires dept.
Sivar writes "StorageReview has a review of the first 10,000 RPM IDE hard drive. Despite the speed that other technologies are improving, this is the first rotational speed increase in almost six years for standard IDE drives." The review is pretty thorough, but also warns to keep in mind that the reviewed unit is only beta hardware. -

Re:IN SOVIET RUSSIA
Oh, you idiot. I'm sick of lame "in soviet russia" posts. A well-constructed one is funny, but this shit is just lame.
The correct "in soviet russia" post for this article is as follows:
In Soviet Russia, Michael Crichton's latest book, Prey, writes the review below of cybrpnk2! -
IncaseIncase slashdot's front page gets slashdotted:
mgrochmal writes "One of the items bouncing around the rumor mills is EyeTV, a TiVo-like device for Apple computers. Made by El Gato Software, it hooks up to one of the Mac's USB ports and captures MPEG-1 video, with a choice between a VideoCD-compatible recording, or a higher quality recording. You can read about a preview build of it, as well as read a comparison between it and a TiVo." It doesn't come with a hard drive; and here I was, thinking I wouldn't fill up my new 160GB hard drive any time soon. Silly me.

Re:Why????
Are you sure they'll eventually reduce the rates? Sometimes providers start you off with low-cost or free services to hook you in only to raise prices later. Like all these formerly free e-mail providers have recently done.
Granted, cost of long distance has gone down in recent years, but cost of home service has increased. Cell phone charges have also spiked up lately for per minute charges when you exceed your monthly quota. With the 200 anytime, 2000 weekend plan, for instance, how many times do you manage to stay within the limits? If you exceed those limits, what are you really paying per minute? And you're somewhat locked into it since cell plans usually involve at least a one-year contract agreement. Buying out of those is never worth it no matter how schweeet of a deal you can get elsewhere.
Which brings up an interesting point; Here is what the Vonage website has to say about the term of the agreement...
"b. Term
The term of this Agreement depends on the plan, feature or promotion you select and is described in separate subscription or calling plan ("Calling Plan") materials provided by Vonage."
Ok, I'd like to know what that really means. I couldn't find any calling plan details anywhere on their site, and I would be very interested to know how long I'm locked into something like this and if there's a way out if I end up not liking what I've signed up for. I'm sure this information is available to you before you sign the agreement, but they really should state the terms clearly up front. Makes for better PR, IMHO. -
Email.com did the same
Heh - I was/am using a similar free e-mail service at Email.com. They made this same change recently. They kept sending me 'subscribe now and save' messages in order to continue their mail forwarding service. The cutoff date came and went, their warnings have stopped, but they're still forwarding my mail. At first I thought it was for real and maybe they just hadn't gotten around to turning off my forwarding, but now (weeks later) I'm starting to think it was just a ploy to get people to send them money. Kinda weird.
I'm not inclined to subscribe to these kinds of things. I have enough email addresses that I pay for as part of a domain or ISP service that it doesn't interest me to pay for additional mail services. I also don't freak out over targeted advertising. I'll put up with it (read, ignore it), to receive a free service. I don't begrudge someone wanting to make money for providing a service. I've paid for plenty of shareware and I do subscribe to some things, but this strikes me as a sort of bait and switch tactic. 'Let's give it to them free until they're dependent on it - then we can stick it to 'em! Bwuhahahahaha!'
Ok - maybe it's not as nefarious as all that and they really do just need to make some money to keep the ship afloat. That's fine - I guess I get to choose whether to contribute or not. At this point, I'm leaning toward 'not'. Pop access sure is convenient, but checking mail via web still works. ;-) -
Re:I think I'll be OK
The only thing I'm really worried about right now is losing my e-mail account and having friends get their messages bounced before I can tell them my new address (whatever that may be). It's almost as bad as going through a change of area code with the phone company, only here, the grace period is a matter of days.
Which is why you never use an email address that's tied to your Internet Connection! -
Re:Not just "incompatible browsers"
Well...Email.com is a nice free service that includes the ability to auto-forward mail to another address. A feature I find very useful since I can change ISP's without having to send out one of those annoying, 'Hey everyone, here's my new email. Please update your blah, blah, blah...', messages that everyone ignores.
Another nice by-product is the ability to turn off forwarding while traveling so you can pick up your mail via the web...
-
Poorer areas?
Just how will this change anything? There are already many free e-mail providers out there (e.g. Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, email.com,... etc.). If they're so concerned about bridging "the digital divide by making computers accessible to every Houstonian," wouldn't it be a better idea to get computers into these poor homes first, so they'll have a way to access the Internet without having to go to libraries, fire stations, or police stations every time they want to check their mail or do anything else? Houston could even provide the poorer areas with free (or discounted) Internet access, or they could use one of the few, but remaining Free Internet providers.

Re:it's the guns, I'm afraidI very much disagree with you, and bringing the gun issue up at all is borderline trolling...and this thread has gotten way off topic.
I have a lot I would like to say to refuse you, but I would save that for email or an article that actually has something to do with the gun control subject.

Retro games ok? Awesome!I'm really impressed to see the owners of "retro" games donating them to the public good. They (hopefully) made their money when the games were originally released, and, as Jeff Minter notes on his game download page, "software old enough to be running on emulators is not going to be exactly generating a huge amount of revenue" . Now that their work has become iconic and part of a sizeable subculture, making that work a freely available part of that subculture is generous, tasteful, artistic.
Anyone who appreciates such gestures should voice their support. Send mail thanking Ian Bell, and check out his web site. Do the same for Jeff Minter by following the links above. And hunt down these guys' circa-1980-hot-shot-game-programmer peers, show some love and relive the old days of 8-bit.
If you're not wasted, the day is. -
What's so great about Hotmail? For the life of me, I can't figure out why Hotmail is practically synonymous with Web-based email. First to market? Or first to popularize? While I have personally had no complaints or problems with Hotmail, I'd hardly place it in the upper tier of free Web-based email services. I think uReach and iName are superior if only because they don't divulge the originator's IP address. But Netaddress, Mail.com, Mailcity, OneBox, eMail, ExciteMail, GoMail, just about any portal or community site (Deja, Netscape, AltaVista), and any number of smalltime "boutique" services (like ApexMail, Flashmail or MyPad) will do the trick and often with better service or features. Or is MSN's Passport service really that compelling?
Besides uReach, Yahoo!Mail is the only one I use for "real" mail because I'm hooked by the rest of Yahoo's personalized services, esp. Yahoo!Companion. The rest are just "throwaway's", good for pseudononymous transactions. If you're placing a lot of trust in Hotmail not to lose your data, or keep it secure, or always be available...I think you're being foolish.

Re:Hotmail Alternatives?
Email.Com has free message forwarding which is kind of usefull at times.

from the load-testing-is-cool dept.
So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.( Read More... | 335 of 335 comments )

Bram writes "Just found an article about another way to invade privacy." He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army.
