Re:eDonkey vs. Kazaa
Of course. I was talking about the network, not the client. I use both of the networks above, neither with the "official" clients. The only way to use Kazaa is Kazaa Lite, and for eDonkey I use eMule.

Re:Quality, price, and format.Let me not have to spend 3 weeks downloading an album from a billion different encodes.
Point taken, but if you want to download whole albums, you can't go past eDonkey, especially the eMule client, or lMule for Linux.
Do a search for the album on Jigle, and there will ususally be a HQ version of it, all the files RAR'd together, usually with cover scans and playlists. (I found a good quality - 192 VBR - version of Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, a pretty obscure album) Everything I've got off there is very high qualityAnd, if I like it, I *will* buy the CD. Unless, of course, it's something like Hail to the Thief, where the CD is copy protected. I was *this* close to buying it, but thought better of it when I saw that damn sticker. I have every other Radiohead CD and a a few singles and so on legit, but I'm not buying this.

safe way to grab files
use emule to download files in a distributed fashion. It is almost impossible to get a malicious file this way. Especialy if you hang out on web sites that post hashes of known good files. Emule also supports lists to block networks run by people that attack P2P file sharing clients.
If you have a virus scanner and software firewall, it is smooth sailing. Just throw in a cheap CD burner to save your downloads! -
OSS and Windows
But, you see, OSS for Windows is catching on! Some of the most popular programs on Sourceforge are win32. Everything that you need for spyware-free commercial-free RIAA-free music and video sharing is available there, on sf.net. Here's a sampling:
CDEX - a great MP3 ripper. Use with LAME for great, free rips.
eMule and DC++ - very popular P2P clients
BitTorrent - For large file sharing (movies, etc)
VirtualDub - for video format conversion (DiVX, VCD, etc)
Audacity - multi-track audio editor
I could go on and on. Look at this list and all the win32 apps there. -
Re:How is it better than ed2k?
I'm sorry-- excuse me? What client are we talking about here? For Windows, EMule isn't harder to use than your average other file sharing app and with LMule you'll have this GUI available on Linux. I even find compiling/installing mldonkey to be a breeze and that one even supports BitTorrent now!
I also don't see how BitTorrent would be technically superior to ed2k, were it not that people say BitTorrent is blazingly fast, while edonkey is kind of slot (but downloads always complete). There are also many sites that put up ed2k links. -
here ya go kids

eMule
BitTorrent
... is really great, and I can't imagine why it hasn't caught on outside of the Anime world.Probably because everybody else is using eMule, which does roughly the same thing, perhaps? Case in point: comment 5627345.

Combine with EMule and Overnet Instead
While refining the original protocol is all well and good, why not look towards intergration with other open networks now?
I've used em all, as they say, and while no one client is best for all applications I'd say the Emule development is damn close. Since it's Open Source and there are several main "production" versions from different groups plus individual modders putting out even more versions on the cutting edge of development. The best code gets quickly integrated all the way from the edge to the trunk, I've had my eye on their mod forums as well as the latest emule 27a thru 27c releases and things are really moving towards another great milestone release.
With the integration of Overnet support into EMule it now has the best of both worlds, with both public servers and client to client directories. Plus with weblink sites making it easy to find and add known good files to your queue, by batches if needed, it gives the end user the complete experiance of a mature tech.
At least Gnutella is open and may actually end up moving in this direction, I'm disappointed in hearing that the upcomming WinMX will still be closed, both their client and their network really have some good features but in the P2P world closed is death IMHO. As for me, I'll be waiting for the latest 27c EMule as modded by Sivka, my personal favorite at this time.

eMule Project
I've only glanced at the first 20 or so replies to this article and already about a third of them are talking about KaZaA.
If you don't like KaZaA's constant pop-up windows and warning messages and prompts to install the latest Flash plug-in etc... use something else!
I just discovered the eMule Project about a week ago. Open source. No ads. And it looks a lot nicer than the spamware that I've been using for the past year or so too. Yes, it took me a while to get used to it (I had to actually READ THE HELP FILES to figure out how to get it past my router!) but it works really well now. -
ed2k link is correct
The Slashcode puts a space in the middle; hence the invalid link.
The hash is correct. I've checked it against my download and on Jigle.
-
Why take their word for it?
Try it out... in a virtual machine, of course. When MS say alpha, they mean it.
eDonkey2000 network link (Emule strongly recommended):
ed2k://|file|longhorn_usa_4008_x86fre_procd1.iso |
687122432|7f006a56ea5a4068c32351b2c837f763|/
Copy and paste both parts onto one line, with no space, | next to 6. Paste result into Direct Download ed2k link space in Search tab. This assumes you already have a working emule.
Sorry - I couldn't make the link clickable. Slashdot wouldn't let me. Share and enjoy - carefully.
For a key just do a search for Longhorn on edonkey, you should find the very common files which are the activation crack and a sample key.
Obviously none of this is for production use, duh, just an idea what The Enemy is up to next. -
Re:a really bad idea
What this means for you: Say goodbye to KaZaA and other useful (meaning large, meaning commercially-supported) networks.
So what you're saying is less clients with banner ads, spyware and affiliate scheme tricks, but more clients like eMule and services like Filenexus? Sounds good to me. When do they get started? -
Re:Why can't they win?
These ventures require money. Who will want to risk money on a venture that has a high likelyhood of getting smashed?
No they don't. These networks are entirely self supporting, and could well be supported by free software projects.
As always, the free projects are taking longer to mature then the proprietary once, but they are coming along. Look at EMule and DC++ for instance.
I think that they could possibly kill the "global" P2P systems if they managed to effectively attack and fine people who are sharing data. As it is, the worst thing that can happen if you share is that you get told to stop - if there was a substantial chance that sharing files meant a $100 ticket, they would dry out pretty fast.
(I wrote "global" because I think in such a case people would start trading in closed circles, relying on the six degrees of seperation for files to get around.) -
Stupid.
It won't work well with all P2P networks. A prime example is the eDonkey network which uses a hash of each file as an identifier, not a filename/size identifier. You can rename the file to anything and the hash won't change. eMule Project is another great eDonkey network client and is open source.
This is too little, too late, unless you're stuck on Kazaa. -
Re:Maybe he wants distributed capture
This thought occurred to me last night while doing some kazaa downloading. Maybe a better P2p capture system would involve each client downloading 1 frame per movie, and sharing that with the world. The clients could assemble the movie from a distributed network, much like a frame server does in premiere.
eDonkey does something similar for the files that it downloads. It divides the file into 9mb chunks and when you have one complete chunk, that part is shared on the network. It works really nicely for large files like movies and ISOs. eDonkey also has this neat feature of having urls that stores the file's hash value. So if you share a file, and wan't people to download that particullar file, you just publish the url on a web page. There are whole sites devoted to edonkey links. ShareReactor and FileNexus are the two most common such sites. Check them out and see the power of this system! The eDonkey network is based on servers and anyone can set up one. The maker of eDonkey has now come up with a serverless P2P system called OverNet that is based on the same edonkey protocols for file transfers and link sharing
If you wan't to use edonkey, then get the open source eMule client. It is an edonkey clone with better features and it is open source. It has a lot of mods for various types of addon features. I personally use the eMule Plus MOD. It even has a web server that you can use to control the client remotely!

Depending on what you're looking for....
You should also check out EMule. They picked up where the EDonkey developer left off, and added a bunch of functionality and features. And the best part is that you can click links from places like Sharereactor, come back to your computer 24 hours later and it's there, with no further intervention from you required.
Just click and walk away...
PS-Did I mention that there's no spyware? -
Direct ConnectAs a sidenote, try DC++ as your Direct Connect client instead. It's actively developed open source client, and it's... good.
However, because the source is available, there have been versions of it, modified by others of course, that go against the spirit of peer to peer file sharing. This, among other reasons, has led to some hub administrators banning the use of this client. If that's the case for your favorite hubs, you might consider finding new ones.
I'd say the difference in quality and stability is similar to eDonkey vs eMule.

Re:Kazaa vs. eDonkey
mldonkey is an excellent client for linux, but for windows users there's eMule, which has garnered alot of buzz lately in the eDonkey community (both positive and negative)
for those having problems with the normal windows client, i suggest it may be checking out -
eMule
For those Windows people who prefer an open-sourced alternatives, there is an eMule ed2k network client.

It does (with a GPL license, though):
