Re:It's 1985 all over again!
Hey, genius.
The evidence doesn't really support your claims. There are many people hacking the iPod every day. There are entire sites about it.
The iPod works seemlessly with Microsoft Windows. Apple even ported their jukebox program over to it! Does that really sound like a company whose motto is "Interoperate And Die!" Jesus.
Why is it that you're lambasting Apple for this particular decision (heavy-handed though it may be), but you haven't raised your voice in protest over their lack of WMA inclusion? Oh, right...they have a vested interest in promoting their own file formats...WHICH IS WHAT THEY'RE DOING RIGHT NOW!
Look...it's hard to laud Apple for this (though some people are trying). I'd much rather have had them do nothing. But really...who cares? Real was stupid to try it. -

Why Motorola? Because of this:
The Motorola V3.
Sex on wheels (or at least whatever the same saying is for a phone... Sex off wires!?)
Seriously, the V3 is such a stylee phone (check out that Trek-like etched keypad) - Apple probably wished they'd designed it themselves.
For the phone geeks: Titanium casing; Bluetooth; camera; 262,000 color QVGA (240x320) LCD. Drool! -
Re:Saw a braille PDA at the bus station the other
Possibly it was a hiptop? Or heck, maybe it was a Newton.

Re:freeipod.com - legit or scam?
It's a pyramid scheme. They know that 99% of people will get a few friends to sign up, but not enough to earn an iPod. There are also lots of "mysterious reasons" why people get their order cancelled.
Engadget did a little investigative reporting about freeipod.com. -
MP3
From the Sunglasses/MP3 Player link:
We have a little addendum to our Tech from the Tour de France feature from a couple of weeks ago: this special pair of Oakley sunglasses with a built-in MP3 player that Lance Armstrong was spotted wearing. No idea whether they're planning to ever sell these or not, but a little bit of research reveals that the sunglasses only have enough room on them for 35 songs, which makes us think that they probably have somewhere around 128MB of storage somwhere in there.
True, but that doesn't mean Lance plays only 35 songs for the entire Tour. Does anyone know if the Tour rules prohibit changing electronic media and so forth? He could play a new set of 35 songs every day. At least that would be interesting trivia, what songs did Armstrong listen to every day of the Tour.. -
Re:QuestionIt's too bad Bluetooth dosen't support any audio better than mono... I think Bluetooth stereo headsets would be awesome, but alas, it's not possible without stupid hacks.
These stereo bluetooth headsets are out now. As far as I can see stereo is supported in bluetooth.

Lance's sunglasses
screw the ipod, I need sunglasses with a builtin MP3 player! 128 megs ought to get me through most of my bike rides...

Re:When I see itFile JAVA and its promise of platform independance away with all those AT&T commercials from the mid 90's that promised you would soon be able to check out and read entire books via the internet, make video phone calls, and perform remote heart surgery with their new technology.

Re:Hmmm
From the photos link:
They also showed a 10-minute trailer for the new movie "iRobot" starring Will Smith. Apparently the company has some relationship with filmmakers. We don't know if it's in name only, or if they consulted for the film.
iRobot, huh? Yeah, cause the movie's named after the company. *smacks head on table* -

Re:Cell phones with wifi?Motorola is already working on it. And people are already bitching about that as well
Seriously though, I won't want to use my cellphone to browse the internet. However, hooking it up to a PC is a wonderful thing to do, as people alreay are with CDMA phones in India (Reliance, Tata Indicom, etc)

Re:Bluetooth?
DS Has wifi, not the BT.
The DS has Wi-Fi AND bluetooth. Actually, a lot of people are saying that it's not really bluetooth, rather some Nintendo proprietary stack based on bluetooth. But there is, in fact, two different ways to engage in multiplayer wirelessly -- Nintendo's Protocol/Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. So one could conclude that we'll be seeing some possibilities for world-wide (or nation-wide) online gaming soon.
The article uses chess as an example of multiplayer gaming on cellular devices, but I don't really think that's a good example of how cellular multiplayer gaming would fail. I don't think the kind of people who are going to go out of their way to play games online in a true multiplayer fasion (no "shadow gaming" here) are going to be playing chess. Chess is time-consuming, chess is thought intensive, and chess is limited to two players.
UbiSoft's mobile game titles (Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, XIII) are examples of where the mobile gaming industry is heading. A friend from my macroeconomics class use to spend the entire class playing UbiSoft's SC:Pandora Tomorrow on his Nokia cellphone, and the game looked surprisingly fun (despite lacking 3-D graphics). I can certainly see room for multiplayer for a game like that, and I imagine the same could be said for many mobile titles like it. But on a similar note, one could also point towards the upcoming Ghost Recon title for the bastard step-child of the taco-phone, which is a full, 3-D FPS. The game looks great, given its limited resources and the demo of online multiplayer on the Ngage's website looks fantastic. -

Re:DS will not use Bluetooth
Sorry. The Register says that USA Today originally reported that DS would have bluetooth. Since it was one of the first sources of information, I guess that the information I got was wrong.
Another article can be found there. It details a little more about the mixup. Sorry again for the confusion. -

Re:Whatever it is...
Thats a damn shame, the segway was a bloody good invention. The problem with it is it just looks so crap.
And it's to slow, not to mention it can't carry any shopping unless you invest in a rubbish looking trailer, and when you do have a rubbish trailer kids can chase you and nick you shopping negating the whole point in you going out on your segway.
However extream segwaying looks like a spot of fun -
