Re:They should simply threaten to quit Google Play
inb4 F-droid.
-
Re:I feel like I'm missing something
F-Droid, which is a fork of Aptoide that uses a single repository instead of publishing other third-party repositories, is available on the Google Play Store, so I don't think Google has a problem with rival app stores. I'd bet money that Google's actions against Aptoide have more to do with the repositories of pirated apps that are published through Aptoide, since if you get a paid app for free through Aptoide, Google doesn't get their cut.
F-Droid is not available on the Play Store. The Play Store policy prohibits distributing any kind of app store, even open source ones.
Do not ever download anything called "F-Droid" from the Play Store. If you see it there, it's likely someone's lame attempt at malware.
The real F-Droid is at https://f-droid.org/ (and is very much worth installing!)

Well done Google!
Glad I use a custom ROM. CyanogenMod/LineageOS stock camera app FTW.
If you're stuck on a carrier supplied firmware, try Simple Camera. It's very basic but it does the job.
Open Camera is another possibility, but I've had problems with it not saving pictures too.

There's always Superuser on F-Droid
-
Re:Disable it then.
Here's a good start:
-
Re: Doesn't sound right
Besides that, you can still get all of the gratis Play Store apps you want.
-
Re: Doesn't sound right
Well, without the apps, Android is like that windows smart phone.
If only there was an alternative to the play store...
-
Re:Apt and the App store.
There's nothing wrong with the concept of the app store. There's is a problem with rent-seeking, and exerting excessive control and censorship on your platform.
Apt does none of that, most critically because apt is not an app store. It's an open package manager which you can link to any repository you damn well please.
Likewise you don't see people complaining about F-Droid either.
-
Run your own Maps server
Run your own map server locally (Sailfish server that works with multiple viewers, Android and iOS also have offline map solution, with MicroG providing several solutions for apps that require the Google Map API)
For the location service it self, you can have lots of replacement including offline too .
Fuck online companies.
( ^- that has actual very practical implications when you're abroad and have internet roaming or on a hike away from any connection services) -
Re: Wait..What?
> Amazon is a poor second-class app source.
https://f-droid.org/. No, it doesn't have anywhere near as much software as the google or amazon repositories, but it ain't going to spy on you and neither will the stuff it hosts. Depends on what your priorities are, really.
-
Privacy Browser
F-Droid has a browser implemented with the system Webview that disables Javascript by default, and gives you a one-button enable.
Privacy Browser does not offer extensions, but it does have a few more useful features, including blocklists and Tor integration.
I hope that you find it useful.

Re:haha
You can already have this. Wipe your phone and install LineageOS (https://www.lineageos.org/) so that your device is free of all the nasty stock Google shit. Additional software can be found from F-Droid (https://f-droid.org/). There's nowhere near as much as you'd get in the "normal" Google store, but that's one of the prices you pay for safety.
Combine Firefox Mobile (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid/) with either uBlock Origin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/) for plain adblocking, or uMatrix (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/umatrix/) if you want a more complete web cleansing solution by basically forcing a whitelist into your browser.
(yes, I want a Librem 5, I've already placed my order)

Re:true, but needs focus on users first
If you want people to contribute their data (and time) en masse, you have to give them a high-quality mobile experience.
A lot of people seem to like the Maps.me interface. In fact I was telling a friend about how OpenStreetMap allowed people to have a GPS abroad even without a data connection and he told me he did not see the point since he just used Maps.me. Well, Maps.me uses OpenStreetMap. Duh!
And if you don't like Maps.me there's Osmand+ (also available in the Google Store), and plenty of others, including a lot for specialized uses such as hiking or cycling.
-
Re: How?
Couldn't there be mobile apps we would run on our phones that relied on Google Maps for navigation but shared our travel experiences to Open Street Map. I wouldn't mind running an app like that for awhile.
You're in luck, there are multiple applications you can run on your phone what will help OpenStreetMap:
StreetComplete - Lets you fill in missing map details for things around you as you walk in the street.
Mapillary - Provides street-view images for OpenStreetMap.
OpenStreetCam - Provides street-view images for OpenStreetMap.Regarding street-view, Mapillary is the more advanced of the two right now, at least in terms of coverage but also, as far as I can tell, with regards to what they can do with the images. Through deep learning they are now able to recognize street signs, traffic lights, urban furniture, generate 3D building models, etc. And you are allowed to use all this to contribute to OpenStreetMap.

I'm surprised someone in the situation you describe hasn't heard of Yalp Store yet.

Re:This talk of Google being a "Monopoly" is B.S.
I like startpage / ixquick. But it fails me sometimes and I fall back to google.
Firefox is still alright.
The alternatives to android are pretty shitty. Apple?
.... Microsoft? But there's an important almost but not quite viable alternative of running F-droid.Google services don't ship on Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, or the various flavors of Linux.
*Cough* Android is a flavor of linux. *cough*.
And google services ship with them. And seriously don't like being removed, when you even can. If MS can get an anti-trust suit for shipping Windows with IE, then this is probably equivalent.
No one is ever a complete monopoly, but they can be dominant enough to push the market around in abusive ways. I'm not sure google has really been all that abusive though. I get the sense that they're stepping in that direction over time.

Re:"TGIF staff meeting on Thursday"??
Why wait for Google to do it? Just use Simple Calendar. It has no online requirement, it doesn't utilise Google's calendar or sync anything online.
Simply (hah) put, it's a calendar app that you can add entries to that stay local on your device. I had been looking for something like it for years. Oh, it's open source too.
-
Re:No web mail
AquaMail doesn't do LDAP or CardDAV, wanting instead to use my address-book for everything, which is not what I want.
Sounds like you need DAVdroid. It makes your CardDAV directory available to any app that needs to work with addresses: your address book (into which it syncs your directory), email apps, etc.
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/at.bitfire.davdroid/
(It's also available through Google Play, if you prefer that source.)

Re:Because using standards is so 2000 & late
* Firefox Focus/Klar. In contrast to the usual Firefox browser, this new app is actually useable on a phone; and last time I checked it had better privacy settings than the Chrome browsers you find on most androids.
This appears to just be Firefox without bookmarks. Not terribly useful.

Re:Because using standards is so 2000 & lateThis. I've recently gone through a phase where I've been trying to get monopolies and clouds out of my life myself. If you need any inspiration, this is what I've ended up with:
- * KolabNow as an email provider instead of GMail. They have a good privacy policy, are hosted in Switzerland which has fair privacy laws, and costs about $3/month.
- * Syncthing for making your own open-source "cloud storage" as a replacement for Dropbox and Google Drive. I've played around with a few alternatives, but this was my favourite; it's very straight-forward to set up, fully peer-to-peer so you don't need a centralized server if you don't want one, and it has clients for most operating systems. The Android app lets you set it to only sync when it's on WiFi and/or charging.
- * Maps is an alternative to Google Maps, which uses OpenStreetMaps, the "Wikipedia of navigation". It doesn't have the same knowledge of local shops and restaurants as Google Maps does, but it is "good enough" for most of my needs, and in contrast to other clients like OsmAnd, the interface is actually quite slick.
- * CopperheadOS for my phone. It's still partially in the Google ecosystem, by being an Android distribution that requires a Nexus or Pixel. But Android itself is still mostly open-source, and this comes with all Google apps and services stripped out. (Lineage works as well, but Copperhead is more focused on privacy and security.)
- * Yalp. Some apps are simply not available outside Google Store (e.g. online banking apps in my case); this helps you install such apps without having to install the full Google Services platform on your phone.
- * Firefox Focus/Klar. In contrast to the usual Firefox browser, this new app is actually useable on a phone; and last time I checked it had better privacy settings than the Chrome browsers you find on most androids.

Re:Android Piracy is going to go rampant
Just use the Yalp Store app.

Re:interesting
Malware?
There's at least two orders of magnitude more malware at the Google Play store than at F-Droid

Good news for F-Droid
Looks like consumers who unwittingly buy non-Hooli, sorry, I mean non-Google phones and tablets are going to find out the advantages and disadvantages of F-Droid https://f-droid.org/ sooner or later. No, you can't get the Facebook or Twitter apps, which you might regard as a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you want to do with your phone/tablet and how much you value your privacy.
