Re: Junk
Yeah, when criminals call you, they're the outlet for all your life's frustrations. Now matter how abusive you are, even if you threaten to rape their children to death in front of them, there is nothing they can do about it. Threaten to firebomb their office? They can't report it without identifying themselves.
As for signing up for their service, try Fake Name Generator, which will give you a complete fake identity, even a credit card number (guaranteed to be fake, but should pass the checksum).

Re:I would think many use same the password
I would think many use same the password. I do for ease of use. It's knowing when to use a unique one is the trick - to add: almost all of mine are unique.
Why would you ever use the same password twice when there is KeePass? You memorize one complex, annoying, long password which unlocks your database, then generate really really long, complex, annoying passwords (that tend to break the authentication software of many naively written websites) for each and every individual account. Everything goes into the database, with lots of nice metadata like the date of account creation and the recovery questions and answers. That way you can lie on the recovery answers intentionally, and not have to worry about remembering which site you told which lie. (You didn't think my dog's name actually was AdmiralNelson did you?) About the only thing which doesn't go into the database is the passphrase for the encrypted volume in which I keep all my nuclear secrets. I memorize that one too.
Linux tard
:) I use acerose and have for many years. So buggy Wine program working site refused to post my "how to" :)As for my secret identity I use http://www.fakenamegenerator.c... and keep re-rolling it till my area code is close. (appears to be spam alone sides, all white space).

Re:About time!
Surveying friends and family (including a couple hundred facebook friends), calls at first seemed random, but in more recent months, appear to specifically be targeting people over 50. The most recent calls have asked for me by name. This leads me to believe that they're using someone's pilfered (or purchased?) address list. Has AARP had any breaches lately?
You're right regarding age - they've hung up on me in the past if I've sounded too youthful, so when I'm trying to get a scammer to stay on the line, I make my voice all quavery like an old man.
I have a friend who signed me up for a free trial of adult diapers as an April Fool's joke... my guess is that's how they got my number.Incidentally, the Fake name generator is great for keeping them on the line for a long time, giving fake credit card numbers and addresses until they catch on.

Re:No Google
Well, that"s why you use throwaway identities: http://www.fakenamegenerator.c... It may not be 100% foolproof, but it certainly makes it harder for others to build an exact profile of you. Most especially use something like Lastpass to import 3000 generated identities that you can randomly pick from to auto fill forms.

I quit trusting Cyanogenmod 9-26-13
I have a rooted Motorola Xoom (Googles own), for the longest time I would bypass the Gmail log-in to go
to the settings and block a message to Cyanogenmod that the ROM had been installed. As time passed I figured they deserved to know it was being used and by what system, so would
set it up correctly the first time through then disable the Cyanogenmod status checks.Twas the 9-26-13cm-10.1-20130922-NIGHTLY-wingray update. There's a pattern or sequence I go through
when I install a new Rom the first is to sign in to Google, The 9-26-13 social engineered my Gmail account from me.The first thing differed in you were to log into Cyanogenmod, I kept using my gmail address until I gave it a moments
thought. Logged into Cyanogenmod then continued into setting up the ROM, I've no reason to of logged into Cyanogenmod.
The signing into Cyanogenmod wasn't necessary to install the ROM but I didn't know at the time, you can/could just skip past that part.As for my the Gmail account it's only used with my Xoom, with an identity from http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ so no big deal.
But that signing into Cyanogenmod, was a sign things had changed, so back tracked a version and am staying there.

Re:Privacy Issues
To test it, they want you to put in all kinds of personal information. No thanks.
-
Re:But worst? It pegged him as a Windows user.
Maybe I just need to poison the data some more.
Couldn't hurt. Although I always use completely fake details when they don't already have at least some information on me already. A good source for fake ID information that will pass most sanity checks like zip code and address combinations or state and area codes is Fake Name Generator. As for the debt collectors, ask them to provide information concerning the debt, such as when it was first incurred, without giving out or confirming any information about yourself. If they refuse then tell them that the person they're looking for cannot be reached at your number or address, which is the truth in your case right? If they disclose the age of the debt and it's beyond the statute of limitations for collection you wouldn't be obligated to pay even if it was your debt and it can be a violation of law for them to continue calling depending upon where you live. Finally, you should note the number that they're calling from so that you can add it to your blocked call list on your phone account. The caller id number might be spoofed, but it couldn't hurt. While your at it you should also set your phone account to 'unblock or I won't take your call'. That way, you don't get 'private call' in the caller ID if they actually want to ring through.

Kinda, but don't think your "hidden"
Every account I have in under a different handle, each piece of mobile equipment is under a different
persona http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ I don't do social sites only because I don't care for them.I've nothing to hide, it's just what I do. I was security conscious long before Gore gave the public access to the Internet.
Forte Agent mail reader lets you have multiple personalities, POP3ing Email from your other accounts.
-I don't care for online e-mail.Google will catch up with you if you have multiple Gmail accounts; asking if you would like to combine
them and use your real full name Mr. Micky Mouse . I see this as an IP match and where the weak link is.It's what I do, but not a fanatic about it, I know there are key phrases, and statements I'm prone to use
no matter the account.Just use a HOSTS file it blocks most of your tracking and spam online, it's your E-mail address that screws you (spam wise),
I use https://spamgourmet.com/ for disposable Email addresses, many filter that address and don't allow it.
-A HOSTS file block tracking ie if you don't touch their site they don't know about you or your surfing habits.Root (jailbreak) your mobile equipment so you can use a HOSTS file cause your phone/tablet has conversations with the trackers.
Google Play Store put a halt to programs that stopped that conversation, so you have to find your blockers elsewhere. And always read ToS's and Privacy Policies, while they may not be telling you the truth they do list sites you need to block
if you use their service (tracking). Also one's with a hardcore we collect everything policy I've no use for (Angy Birds (rovio.com)). -
Kinda what I do
I use this free service http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ to generated an identity. I keep hitting
generate till I get a zip code that's close and use that info for whatever site.An email address to that identity is also available (for a price) but I use www.spamgourmet.com for that.
Cookies are taken care of with a
.bat file. And of course a HOSTS file, I use APK to gather all the HOSTS files, combine them then make a HOSTS file from it's output
http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
makes for one nice HOSTS file. -
Re:They already do
Another tactic that you might want to consider is deliberate seeding of misinformation about yourself into the advertising streams. For example using many false birthdates, occupations and wildly divergent incomes along with different plausible addresses, phone numbers, etc. I often use this technique, usually also with aliases, depending upon how important it is for the information to be accurate and usually it's not very important at all. Very few organizations actually require accurate information about you, so why be truthful when dealing with anyone else who feels like asking for it? If they insist on me providing them with something then Fake Name Generator is always ready to serve them plausible yet useless data whenever the need arises.
-
I'm prepared for just such a situation
http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ I just keep re-rolling until I get a zip code that's close.
Then use that information to fill out forms and accounts; keeping it on file for future reference.
My security doesn't stop at a HOSTS file and malware protection. But I use Gmail for
all of these accounts so it's not perfect. -

Re:Many accounts are just for spamming
There are personal reasons for these services as well (ie: spam and tracking).
Disposial Email address? I use
http://www.spamgourmet.com/
Another identity? I use.
http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ .
Only when the website greets you do you know who you are there - Hello: Robert!. -
Bing will never be an option for me
I pretty much cover my tracks online. Nothing as drastic
as using a proxie, but the normal stuff; delete ALL cookies
run a HOSTS file, Peerblock, use Spamhaus and change my
identity occasionally http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/
as a start.http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/searchspy/results.htm?fci=1?filter=0&qcat=web
is an old link that doesn't work anymore but would show what searches were
being processed at that time, it was an eye opener. But with Google (the only search engine I use) I'm an open
book with my search terms. Which if used out of context could
come across badly.I post to the Newsgroup: 24hoursupport.helpdesk, any subject is
valid and I search each to offer help, some of my searches are down
right abnormal.I use Google as my dictionary "define:xxxxx" as well as spell checker.
Site specific as the results are far beyond the search ability of the site itself:
top 100 stories +directv site:slashdot.orgUsing Google goes against everything I practice, but there is no way
I would allow Microsoft this search information. They have long
ago proved themselves unworthy of my trust. Is Google any better? I'm putting a lot of faith in "Do no harm".
BTW: my slashdot.org account is the real me.

Fake orders
Has anyone considered trying to place fake orders with random contact info?
Might as well complete fake anti-virus software with fake orders.

Why tell the truth when a Lie will do?
This ladies and gentlemen is why one always uses a fake id and a throw away email account when any Internet service requires login.
-
Re:Delete it & forget about it
This is why you always give a fake address when asked
Personally, I prefer FakeNameGenerator combined with Mailinator. It is fast, easy, and it gets around those pesky sites that attempt to match street names, zip codes, and the like that can be bothersome when making up random information off the top of one's head.

When companies are considering bundling your software on commercial products they like to see that an app is maintained by "Joe Thomas" rather than Ko0lDude23.
No problem, I'll just call myself Jarrod D. Henley...

Re:Well
There is nothing to prevent them from recording ALL transactions reported to them by their affiliates and either associating them with you when you do create an account OR even if you never create an Facebook account attempting to maintain a dossier of transactions which Facebook believes are likely to have been made by the same person. This is why one should never provide accurate information concerning one's identity online unless it is absolutely necessary. If you are not feeling creative then you can always use Fake Name Generator to create a throw away identity.

They are indeed useless and potentially harmful to the uninformed, but really it would be easy to maintain anonymity by paying either cash or using a pre-pay debit card (again bought with cash) with fake signup information. Comments - phishing filter quality
Most of "top 10" list appears to be composed of reactive solutions, which rely on user reports. A proactive one automatically detects if a user is entering what appears to be a credit card or debit card number over an http or unsigned https connection - a common trait for most phishing sites.
Based on the article, Google Safe Browsing should either be at the top or bottom of the list, and not obscured by having a reactive entry in a more prominant position.
As a side note, these phishing sites want as much traffic as possible. We should give it to them - Lad Vampire handles the traffic, and the fake name generator gives the database entries. -

Re:Lesson #1 -- Don't Expect Privacy Online
>>>"So,it seems to me that we should post pictures of ourselves everwhere, with tons of incorrect names. I guess tonight i will be making several myspace sites about fake people, with my pictures"
This is a good counter measure, if you can automate it by grabbing images of people from Flickr etc, and create
bogus profiles (use the fakename generator). Nothing like dirtying the database.
But if you do go and dirty the database, I have to add the oblig' "why do you hate our freedom?" -
So is this illegal?
