Outsourcing/AutomationThis is clearly a step in outsourcing childhood. Why have real children take a test when both the test taking and the test generation can be automated. The kids don't need to go to school, but can work at home, i.e. play video games and eat junk food.
Standardized test scores will go up so the education establishment will look good. Plus they can fire all the teachers and replace them with hourly contract workers with 1-HB visas who will work even more unpaid overtime then current teachers. English fluency not required.
Naturally, there will be no cost savings to the public, because all the profit will go into the pockets of the outsourcing companies. That's what already happened with for profit higher education, and the public and the students are left holding the bag. But not too worry. Only the taxpayers, students and general investors were screwed. The insiders already got out with their guaranteed profit. It's the American way.

Double standard
Shouldn't the family that recorded this be facing the very same charges as someone who records police?

Re:No extortion ever, then!
"Nowadays, you rarely hear of a kidnapping case with a ransom demand here in the United States. It's just not worh it."
This guy threw in a new wrinkle: http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/florida/news-ar ticle.aspx?storyid=81035
He obviously has some self-esteem issues. -
Re:Well and...Ah, but baiting Christians is considered marvelous intellectual sport. Often by the same people who bemoan intolerance when any other religion is derided.
Brilliant! If I had 10 mod points they would all be yours. Especially after last night's South Park episode.

Facebook
Being a college student, I have to always be careful about this on the site Facebook (for those who don't know, it's MySpace for college kids). Since anyone with a
.edu email address can sign up, all of my professors, research advisors, and med school admissions reps can see the pictures my friend link to my account of any Friday/Saturday night activities I may participate in. Also, the police on campus all have .edu addresses, and there has been alot of controversy over police officers searching through students facebook pictures (MANY of which show underage drinking/drug use). I just saw an article the other day about a freternity that got shut down for pictures of underage drinking http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/local/news-arti cle.aspx?storyid=53679. I plan on removing my account this summer when I apply to medical schools, not worth the risk. -
Re:Congratulations to Scaled Composites & Stev
The AP story I read said the Global Flyer got assistance in the form of strong tail winds, which would help to conserve fuel and shave off time.
The article also has some links to video of the landing and a Steve Fossett post-landing press conference video. -

Re:Election Observers

s -article.aspx?storyid=21452
Representative Brown said, "I come from Florida, where you and others participated in what I call the United States coup d'etat. We need to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Over and over again after the election when you stole the election, you came back here and said get over it. No we're not going to get over it and we want verification from the world."
Those comments drew an immediate objection from Republican members of the House. Leaders moved to strike her comments from the record. The House also censured Brown which kept her from talking on the House floor for the rest of the day. -
Re:Nonsense !
From a quick Google search:
CBS news
Associated Press
An Australian site
Is that enough, or do you want more sources? -
Re:so? chicago = murder capital.
At least we (suposadly) report all of our crime. Unlike other cities.

Florida Judge denies suit requiring paper trail
Florida's enlightened judiciary has found a Catch-22 way out of a state congressman's lawsuit to require auditable paper trails in voting machines there.

Re:Single parents?Really?
"LONDON (AP) -- Children growing up in single-parent families are twice as likely as their counterparts to develop serious psychiatric illnesses and addictions later in life, according to an important new study."
As you can see, there is a reason why God created both Adam and Eve (not Adam and Steve, by the way)...

Re:Well duh
I recall reading about a study that said that hands-free systems did not reduce the number of gaffes people made while driving and talking on the phone.
Studies have shown that the distraction of a driver's attention from the road contributes to accidents involving cellular phones and that handsfree devices do not reduce the incidence of accidents.
Hands-Free, But Dangerous
Cell Phones and Car Crashes
A lot more, but I don't feel like typing, you probably don't feel like reading, and you can just do a google search to find more.
People who use cell-phones always argue that they are 1-percenters, those in the one percent who might actually not be so stupid when using a cell phone. 99% of cellphone users think they are in that 1 percent and, of course, this is one of those 90% of statistics that was just made up by me, but that is sure what it seems like.
Everyone that uses a cellphone that I talk to says they are capable of driving while using a cellphone. Well, sure, everyone is capable of driving while using a cellphone, but how capable are you at avoiding an accident and driving defensively while using a cellphone? If it's any less than without, then don't do it.
