Isn't this going to be the same problem as Yahoo showing Wii pictures from flickr on their Wii page? (Also see: http://www.flickr.com/forums/help/32752/ ) If netvibes starts adding advertisements to their page (and they will) they will hopefully get the problems they deserve for layouting other people's content.

Re:Is this a surprise to you, or are you just joki
No, we haven't.
Take a look at this graph. There are two set of curves, one comparing the Mann hockey stick to curves showing sunspot activity. The other compares the Moberg 2005 curve to the same sunspot curves.
Here's what I find interesting:
- The Moberg curve (blue curve) follows the Antarctic curve (red) pretty closely, but it tracks almost exactly the same shape as the Greenland curve (green) when it sweeps up in a steep curve in the 20th century.
- The hockey stick curve (orange curve) doesn't do as good a job of tracking with the sunspot curves, in fact it looks like it averaged out the highs and lows (read "MWP" and "LIA") to come up with a relatively smooth shape, but even so, it's still a fair match to the sunspots, especially when it sweeps upward in the 20th Cent.
This can't be coincidental, can it? The obvious conclusion is that the global temps are heavily influenced by sunspot activity. If mankind's pouring of CO2 into the atmosphere was a major influence, the curves wouldn't track together so closely (i.e., the steep upswing would be much greater for the Moberg and Mann temp curves than the sunspots), but that's not the case.
FYI: The sunspot reconstructions I took from Usoskin's millennium-scale sunspot number reconstruction published in the November 2003 issue of Physical Review Letters. There's more current research that was just released, but I can't find the link I had to the PDF. The black GRL curve is from that more recent paper and you can see that it matches the others pretty well.
If the relationships I've drawn are correct, doesn't this strongly imply that the Sun is causing this warming trend?
If you don't think the sunspot curves match closely, it may help to see how poorly the various global temp curves match with each other. Take a look at this Wikipedia graphic combining the global temperature reconstructions from the major players. Looks pretty random to me. The only thing that's given them any credibility is that they all swoop up in the 20th century like they're heading for the moon. And so do the Greenland and GRL sunspot number curves.
Based on that, take another look at the SN curves and then at this one where the curves are overlaid on the Wikipedia graphic.
I'd say the SN curves track better with the global temp reconstructions than many of the wilder global temp curves do. Yet all those curves have been cited by "warmists" as being equally valid (because of that lovely swoop!).
Yup, it's the Sun causing the warming!

Wow, the incompetence is amazingWhat is going on in Boston? Whose call was it to shut down traffic and detonate these with the bomb squad? Does anyone thing a bomb (usually not supposed to be found until it explodes) would have bright LED lights to make it stand out? Some idiotic statements:
"It's a hoax _ and it's not funny," said Gov. Deval Patrick.
If they think it is a hoax, they should look up the definition of the word. This wasn't intended to deceive or defraud anyone. The JEL people better not film their commercials in Boston (the ones with the chalk outlines representing smoking deaths) or the police would think a WMD had already gone off and evacuate the city!"The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger," Turner said in a statement. It said the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Austin, Texas, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
Of course they don't. The reason? No one else in the country is stupid enough to report these to the Department of Homeland Security! Flickr has pictures and comments from two weeks ago showing that they have been in place. I don't know who in the chain overreaction is most responsible, but they should all be held accountable for wasting people's time. The Department of Homeland Security said there are no credible reports of other devices being found elsewhere in the country.

Re:Reasonable suspicionIf you are part of a bomb squad and you get several reports of strange electronic things hanging from bridges, then you see a strange tubular thing wrapped in duct tape, you are going to take it very seriously. Until I see the lit up cartoon character with a middle finger extended. Seriously, if you see these things it becomes incredibly obvious that this is a case of seriously idiotic over-reaction. Don't get me wrong, I love my home state but this is just embarrassing. Yeah...well, before 9/11 did you think that terrorists could kill over 3,000 people with box cutters? IIRC, there was some large quantaties of jet fuel and aircraft involved as well. Just saying...
-
Re:Who's the @**hole now!
a genius wouldn't realize people could possibly be this stupid.
Yeah, I'll have to agree with that, after seeing some photos. Who looks at this and thinks it's a bomb? What kinda pisses me off is that many major news sources are not supplying pictures. First time I read the story I was like "yeah as a large corporation they should have had a team of legal experts that would realize that these devices would be construed as bombs". Until I saw the pictures.
Now here's another question. Say I am a terrorist planning to blow up a bridge. If the bomb is noticed then the bomb squad might have a chance to de-activate it, or at least clear the area. Deaths could be reduced or even prevented all together, going against my goal of killing as many capitalist pigs dead as possible. So this is my question:
Would my strategy involve cramming as many LEDs as possible onto my bomb as possible, preferably in the eye-catching form of a cartoon character giving the finger? Well, I guess the finger would be symbolic or something, but my personal answer remains no.
That said I still think this was a very dumb publicity stunt. -
After seeing the photographs I think I'd be pissed
(as someone else posted) http://www.flickr.com/photos/vanderlin/tags/aquat
e enhungerforce/
Seriously if anything that looks suspicious with me. They placed the devices all over the city and didn't tell anyone? And they thought it was ok?
I'm sure the expense just with bomb squads and shutting down the interstate is beyond prohibitive (Trust me, I lived in Boston, shutting down any street in Boston = hell).
This sounds like something that cartoon network would do but hell if it isn't the type of stupid ass stuff that people aren't thinking about but can cause a major problem. Sounds like someone's getting a pink slip. -
All so unbelievably stupid, except...
When you look at certain pictures, it becomes clear why there was a serious backlash. I would be wondering what series of bright lights were doing on a bridge girder too, but I would not raise a stink about it after closer examination. Alas, most of the population does not have that much common sense, so here we are.

The LED's look pretty neat a lit up!

It's more than just cost-per-mb.
It's more than cost-per-MB; in terms of that, floppies are actually quite hideously expensive and have been for some time. (The last time I bothered to compare was in 2004, but at that point floppies were $130 per GB, while DVD-Rs were around $0.20, you can see a chart here.) The niche that floppies filled, though, wasn't just "cheap storage," but individually cheap (to the point where the value of each disk was basically negligible) disks, and ubiquitously available drives, that were fast and easy to use (no burning to CD), reusable, and physically robust.
I agree with the GGP (parent to my original post) that there really isn't a direct replacement for floppies; instead, their duties have been split among a variety of new technologies. People who still need to move files between computers that aren't networked, can use USB keychain drives. Most people, who are on networked computers, just use email or other network services. Big files or large presentations can be put on CD or DVD; same with backups.
Floppies were unique in their time, because they did basically all of these duties (although, arguably none of them as well as what has replaced them in each case). I doubt that we'll see another technology do as many things as it did; the future is in more specialized tools. -
Re:Windows installer requires them
> I had to install a floppy on a computer I was reinstalling XP on the other day so I could use the SATA drive!
Me too. For extra fun, that computer's power supply didn't have a cable for a floppy, so I ended up with the drive running off another computer's power supply for long enough for the install.

Re:Previous henges
Actually, there is a Woodhenge. Strawhenge, I guess, would be hard to find after so many years.
Nonsense, it's in a not-very-windy bit of Oxfordshire, look... -
Re:Needless arrogance.
Try finding an 8" Shugart disk, the interface is pretty close to the PC interface, that you should be be able to get it working... provided your floppy controller can read the low (150kbps?) bit rate on those drives.
I recently pulled a 3.5" Shugart disk out of a MIDI sequencer because I could no longer source double-density disks. I installed a COTS (but very old) PC 3.5" 1.44MB drive. It writes 720K of data reliably onto HD media, and still reads the old disks.

Re:Yep... seen it a couple of times.
I had that happen, except the "Second Chance" email was a very real looking eBay message, however instead of PayPal, it directed you to Western Union. Total scam. I wrote eBay about this, and of course they did nothing.
I decided to start shopping for season tickets for UT football games. I found a few, however none were on the west side. I finally found a pair on the west side in section 7. It was at $1,000, I put my max bid in at $1,200. I was high bidder until close to the end, where one person outbid me. Then another person outbid him, for $1,825. I thought there was a chance since all the bidders except myself had a bad rating, I'd get a second chance offer. That's how I scored some tickets last year.
I did. However, it was the day after the auction closed, which set up flags in my mind. Two people outbid me, and one of those people was only outbid by $25. So he would have had 5 days to refuse the offer, and less than a day had passed. So there was warning sign one.
So I got this email. Looked official enough. It had been a while since I had done a second chance offer, so I contacted the seller and gave him my address and phone number, and was told to expect an invoice. I got it. (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4). I knew I was getting scammed when I hit reply. Was I to really believe eBay was staffed by dyslexics who used yahoo's web client?
I sent it all to eBay's fraud department, I sure it went into a black hole. But thought I'd document it anyway. Finally, another email from him. How nice of him to discount the fees that Western Union will charge. -

I don't get the motive...
It it was the FCC, behind it, then they would have started with the San Onofre reactor because it most looks like Boobies

Re:What?
Do you mean this? (flickr stores the original if you upload it, even though they don't want to show it if you don't have a pro account).
It's larger alright. Sharper? Wouldn't say so, IMHO, it's much better at medium and large, the full resolution really brings out the flaws.
Purple fringing, almost all detail eaten by heavy noise reduction (look at the smaller tree branches, there's nothing but blur), badly overexposed sky. And that's in nigh perfect conditions.
It's pretty good for a phone picture, maybe it's on-par with cheapo pocket shooters, but it's nowhere near the good ones. -
Re:What?
I took this photo with my phone last week as I walked to work. Nokia N80, 3mp. The original picture is bigger and sharper than the large one on flickr. As good as most pocket shooters, imho. Night time shots aren't great though.

Re:HOWTO: Improving a crummy cell camera
My cameraphone (SE K800i) can actually do this within the camera. It's pretty simplified, take a shot, line up with the edge that's shown, take second, take third but it works well, and it automagically stitches them together. And given the 3MP image sensor and zenon flash, the pictures turn out quite nice

Re:Camera Phones Suck
I don't know what camera phones you've been using, but take a look at this photo I took with a camera phone. I think the quality is rather better than you might suggest (3 mega pixel).
Cameras within phones aren't yet perfect; the optical zoom hasn't yet been perfected and there's still the small issue of having to hold it quite still, but the camera phone is still good at the job it's intended for. If I'm going on vacation, then sure I'll take my proper digital camera with me. If I'm at a party or even out and about and see a photo opportunity, the phone is an ideal tool to take a quick snap. -
Re:Their reason for hiring someone younger might n> Something about that is not right in my book.
Life's not fair - deal with it. Each profession has pros and cons. Quit whining and start learning something new. It's nothing to do with unions, and I've never found it abusive. At least, I don't take any crap. You need to try working in a few places until you find something you like - perhaps contracting.Wow. What great advice! I almost wish I'd said something about "going back to school to do something more rewarding with my life, probably major in mathematics and then either teach or maybe try engineering" in my original post! You know, assuming you don't have Asperger's Syndrome, I think you'd be terrific management material. Again, thanks for the wonderful advice! Cheers.

Re:Come on trolls
Let's get some swastikas going before Germany bans them!
That article seems to me to be somewhat misleading. The use of the swastika is banned in Germany if it is used to promote the ideas of national socialism. In all other context (be it for eduction, in movies and theater) it of course can be used. Eg here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/theodosius/111354338/
The same is true for all over uses of the symbol which are not related to national socialism, eg in Buddhism. -
Re:Germany doesn't get it!
They also want to use their presidency to ban the swastika. The nazi flag is important, it's used for all kinds of purposes (in academia, theater, film) and is culturally significant.
Well, I hope you are aware of the fact that the use of the swastika is only banned in Germany if you use it as a political symbol (meaning as a propaganda in favour of national socialism). The use of the swastika (and also the nazi flag) is legal in Germany in academia, theater, film, and also in all other circumstances where it is used not related to national socialism.
Otherwise, for example, this would not be possible:
