Re:A good reason to go independent
Political party membership as well as political donations are public record in the U.S. Mostly because we are supposed to be free to speak as we see fit, without fear. The "drudge lists" are not so much sold as the clerks tend to limit their distribution to legitimate political concerns. For example, anyone running a petition drive can get them, usually in digital format, so they can self-validate signatures -- there is a nominal fee, but it is pocket change, not a revenue generator for the clerks offices. It's part of the social contract of living in a free country -- you are free to speak and organize, just not necessarily anonymously, and in fact it is considered a civic duty to do so, as part of the self government process. The laws that protect you from harassment and retaliation for your political views are intended to offset the drawbacks of these disclosure rules.

Full contrubution to Bush, none elsewhere.
I'm surprised you're surprised. Have you ever used his company's products? -
Re:Did you read the offending article?
The above information is correct - but you're missing the mention of his exact home address.
CNET didn't disclose "his exact home address." They mentioned the city he lives in, and linked to a page of public information which contained his address.

Re:Send in the Clones!
Data's a bit outdated, but check out http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php, and look up your address.

Re:Send in the Clones!
Public contributions over a certain amount made directly to a Presidential Candidates, to the DNC & RNC are public record. Contributions made other groups (Like Move On & Swift Boat Vets for Truth) are usually not public.
In addition to OpenSecrets (Suggested by the other poster in this thread), check out Fundrace.
Talk about anonymity-- Plug in an address, and see who made a $250+ contributution to a candidate, with house number & everything. There's even a button to map the location of the house, which is a little frightening.
http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php
The databases are not totally accurate-- my own contributions are not anywhere on the list, perhaps because I made a bunch of smaller contributions to multiple groups as I could afford them, instead of one big contribution. -
Re:Now, let's all have a big Slashdot group hug
Texas might have ranked #8 but liberal California ranked #7.
Are you seriously trying to make an argument that California is a socialist state, and since it is #7 vs. Texas at #8, somehow that means something? LMAO! Last I checked, both Texas and California have Republican governors. Both are elements of the United States, which was already postulated by the original Parent thread to which I responded to be the most "right" country in the world. As all states operate under the same Constitution and Federal Government, the idea that one state is somehow running a far-left government is absurd. I live in CA's extremely liberal Bay Area, so, short of MA and NY, this is about as liberal as America gets. While we routinely elect Democrat senators, the 2004 ballot results show that CA isn't a liberal state. Heck, we recalled Davis after his final straw of giving out driver's licenses to people who are in the country illegally. Pointing out my omission of CA's economic status only adds to my point. Oh yeah, and a significant amount of CA's economic power comes from the incredible farmland productivity of the San Joaquin valley. Have you ever checked how the votes or money run a couple miles inland in CA?

religious nut...turn the Constitution into a discriminatory document
As far as terming Bush a "religious nut" I caution against applying simple extremes like this. The same way I disagreed with people who labeled Clinton a "philandering liar." Both demonstrate a lack of understanding and a desire to villify a person to strengthen your argument. You will note that Kerry frequently referenced religion in his campaign, does that make him a "nut," too? You echo a comment about turning the Constitution into a discriminatory document. Another generalism. Does not the Constitution already discriminate? It only applies to citizens of the United States. That is discrimination against non-citizens. Does it not grant all legislative powers to the Congress, and delegate other powers similarly? That is discriminatory to everyone else. It punishes people who give aid to enemies of the US. Again, discrimination. Neither is the idea of a discriminatory amendment new. The 26th amendment stipulates you must be 18 to vote.
My opinion is still out on the matter of defining marriage, so don't assume I'm doing this because I support a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. My point is that jumping on the bandwagon of using this phrase to turn Bush into a discriminator is disingenuous. Remember, marriage itself is a discriminatory institution, whether or not you allow same-sex marriage. Consider this:
> would you allow a man to marry his sister?
> would you allow a man to marry his brother?
> would you allow a 60yo man to marry an 8yo girl?
> would you allow a 60yo man to marry an 8yo boy?
> would you allow a person to marry a mentally retarded person?
> would you allow a person to marry an animal? -
Re:Find donors here
See, this is disturbing, how is this not an invasion of privacy?
If you find the database at opensecrets.org disturbing, check out this other one I mentionned in another post yesterday: http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php. This database will give you the name, amount, employer and address for each donor.

Yet another locator tool

Simple Explanation
>> Am I the only one who's wondering why it's only available via cell phone?
According to the site, this app is an extension of the fundrace.org website, which does let you input a zip code. The cellphone app just takes your current GPS coordinates and checks it against the same database. They aren't trying to sell the software, it seems that they thought it was a moderatly cool idea for a cellphone app and ran with it. Kudos to the devs. -
Re:So....
Exactly. And this whole thing is rediculous in the first place. Mr. Eric E Schmidt, CEO of Google donated $25,000 to the Democratic party and $2,000 to Kerry's campaign. That's doesn't sound very conservative to me... http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php?type=name&l

Re:Outsourcing on Slashdot: Fair and Balanced?
Most of the big companies I buy from are there, with the exception of Southwest Airlines or The Gap. Gotta go make vacation plans and buy some jeans! Just wait until John Kerry takes power. He's going to be looking out for us little people. Never mind that he seems to be the most popular candidate for high dollar donations...

Re:Dean supports Bush!!
Oops, not Alaska, Illinois. I must have subconsciously pulled the AK off of the Oak in Oak Street. In any case, this is still not the correct Howard Dean.
Only two Howard Deans made contributions, neither from Vermont. -
Diebold's Senior VP
huh, I was looking at the citysearch on fundrace, and... *drumroll* as it turns out, the Senior VP of Diebold lives 20 minutes from me. Fundrace Page Suprise, suprise, he gave $2,000 to Dubya.

Re:follow the money -- it's a good thing...
"A quick lookup of my street address was extremely insightful. I recognized many of the names from my years in the business community and guess what? Most of the Republican donors are owners and officers of companies who have been laying off workers (and outsourcing their work) with most contributing $2000 checks from every person in their household. The Dems, on the other hand, had more contributors, but they were much smaller contributions ($50 - $500) and mostly from small business owners and average Joe's -- many retirees."
That may be true where you live, but according to the FatCats index on fundrace.org, Kerry has more wealthy contributors than Bush.
I am not a statistician, so I wouldn't put too much faith in these results. -

Darl McBride - President SCO Group - Thankless Bastard
Shouldn't that be Darl McBride - President SCO Group - Litigious Bastard? -
Re:Our Favorite CharactersI have not checked those links but one thing got me just now. I looked for Michael Eisner and I do not think that I got the Michael Eisner from Disney that we hear about here all the time. The thing is that I remember a story about FundRace on either NPR or PRI (possibly MarketPlace) and I am almost certain that the story claimed that Disney's Michael Eisner contributed $2000 to the Kerry campaign. It now seems that the reporter just did a search for 90210 just to be cute and see what turned-up and did not check the facts too carefully about what was reported.
Also, I did a neighbor search and "Mona Lisa" turned-up. I know the people who live at the address and they are an elderly retired couple. The husband started a company and his daughter now runs it. I did some more searches on the family and at least the daughter turned up, but with a bogus address. Both had maximum contributions. This seems fishy. Shouldn't real names and addresses be used? If this is wrong, how do you report things like this?

Interesting: One Microsoft Way 98052
It's funny..
If you look at all the people who donated to Bush from Microsoft, its all VP's and high level management that get paid the big bucks and donated the max of $2000, but most the ones that contributed to other candidates are all lower paid blue-collar from programmers to trainers and could only donate $200-$500 dollars..
What does that tell you about a "bush" economy.. other than those that are benefiting are the ones that are already able to retire..
I'll be glad to see bush go.. not that I'm a Kerry supporter.. but I'm just tired of all the crap.
SCO attacks IBM w/o proof.. Bush attacks Iraq w/o Proof... which one do you think will get away with it, without any consequences?

You would think that the President of a huge Cable company would want to keep George Bush's FCC around.

Dean supports Bush!!
According to this, it appears that Howard Dean has given up on the Democratic Party altogether and now supports George Bush for President.

What's near your zip code?
That's Charles Cawley's address, the CEO of MBNA America (a credit card bank you might be making payments to). There's also his neighbors, most of which are CEOs or owners of their own companies. You can see if you search around the 19807 area code how high a % is red... Anyone have a really Democratic or really Republican zip code?

now i know who my neighbors vote for
I had a knee-jerk reaction to browsing this database filled with no less than a dozen of my friends', families', and aquaintances' political affiliations with corresponding addresses. My inner-self cried "INVASION OF PRIVACY! ABORT! ABORT!"
I then took a mental step back, collected my wits, and clicked the "Privacy" link. lo and behold:
All the information presented on Fundrace.org is part of the public record and provided by the Federal Election Commission of the United States.
Anyone who contributes "hard money" to political campaigns must provide personal information. This requirement limits the political influence of wealthy, anonymous individuals and allows the public to track financial contributions that may influence the political process.Upon further investigation it becomes apparent that this site is a Very Good Thing(tm). It is a bastion of democracy.
Fundrace, I salute you.

brotherly love?
Governor John Bush only gave his brother $1000?
Zing! -
fundrace is interesting...
OMFG it's late but I couldn't resist playing with this thing. Hmmm...
Bill Gates gave Bush $2000.
Couldn't find anything on Jobs, Allen, McBride, Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson.
Searching for Bush shows George HW, Barbara, and Jeb all chipped in $2000. Donations from random "Bushes" seems to be skewed towards Bush. Searching for Kerry shows every "Kerry" contributed to Kerry.
What other interesting names can be discovered in here? -
