My conclusion: Microsoft is adversarial.
Quote from the parent comment: "I studied MS extensively for a political science thesis. My conclusion is that MS is evil."
In 2003 I wrote an article about Windows XP: Windows XP Shows the Direction Microsoft is Going.
I came to the conclusion that Microsoft is very adversarial toward its customers, manipulating them whenever it is able to find a weakness. -
Summary of U.S. government corruption
The U.S. government is more corrupt now than it has ever been.
I wrote a summary of the corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. I hope other people will write their own summaries and send them to their elected representatives. I love the U.S. and the corruption is extremely unhappy for me.

U.S. government violence in Iraq causes more violence, not peaceful democracy. Violence breeds violence. -
Has the rule of law ceased to exist in the U.S.?
I agree. If there is no trial for treason, then the rule of law has ceased to exist in the United States.
The Bush administration is the most corrupt administration the U.S. has ever had. Here is my summary of the corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.
I hope you will write your own summary and send it to your elected representatives.

Any amount for killing. Little for relationships.
Quote from the parent comment: "This robot is exactly the wrong approach to be taking in a counterinsurgency."
For President and General Dwight Eisenhower was right. The Military-Industrial Complex has a life of its own that ignores the well-being of the people. The U.S. government spends any amount of money for killing, and very little money on making relationships. It was reported that, of the more than 1,000 Americans in diplomatic service in Iraq, exactly 6 speak Arabic.
Here's my summary of Bush administration corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. I hope other people will write their own and send them to their government leaders.
Quick tip from the summary: One of the main purposes of invading Iraq was to reduce the supply of oil and make the price go up. Before the invasion, Iraq was selling 3.5 million barrels a day. Now the country sells 2 million. The Bush family and Cheney have investments in oil and weapons, and they act to make the value of their investments increase. -
Re:How is this provocative ?
As much as I hate the situation in Tibet, I can't help but recall the bombardment of Somalia by the US a few days back. I am guessing that you are American otherwise you wouldn't use such phrases as "nobody sorry about that" when innocent victims are caught in conflicts which only serve US strategic interests.
Try to get past the "invasion" bit (though the US actually invaded many countries by proxy, but that's not the issue) and realise how many people have died as a direct result of a hungry hegemon seeking ever more power. Since WWII, the US bombed 24 countries. http://www.futurepower.org/us_government_violence. html
That is not to say China shouldn't be blamed for the horrific things they did, but by any standard, the US has done several orders of magnitude worse at the planet's scale (while the Chinese were more or less local in their attacks).

The person who introduced the bill is a Republican
Quote from the parent post: "But here are the Democrats assaulting our freedoms again..."
Quote from the article: "That amendment was introduced by Senator David Vitter (R-LA)." The person who introduced the bill is a Republican.
I notice that those who call themselves Republican are often dishonest and more interested in expressing their own anger than in managing government. See my summary of Republican corruption. I encourage you to write your own summary and send it to members of Congress. -
Iraq Body Count's estimate is 55,000 Iraqis killed
Iraq Body Count says about 55,000 people have died because of DIRECT violence caused by the U.S. government. However, that does not count the people who died because of indirect causes. Iraq Body Count is defending itself against criticism that it is undercounting the deaths due to U.S. government violence; you can read the discussions on the site.
An estimated 150,000 Iraqis died because of the first U.S. government-Iraq war. So, the Bush family has killed about 205,000 Iraqis, even using estimates that are low because they count only direct violence.
The total number of people killed in the 24 countries that the U.S. government has invaded since the 2nd world war is, sensibly, I think, estimated at 11,000,000. This counts the number of people who died because of the violence that violence causes.
The U.S. government has started a civil war in Iraq, as well as starting its own war. The people who die in the civil war must be considered to have died because of Cheney - Rumsfeld - G.W. Bush violence. The U.S. government violence did not create a peaceful democracy. It created an even more unstable country; that's exactly to be expected; violence breeds violence. -
Bush has killed more people than Saddam Hussein.
Quote from the parent comment: "Name the last time Fundamentalist Christians flew planes into building killing innocents, or used truck bombs to blow up apartment buildings or office buildings or naval ships."
Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, and Bush, enthusiastically supported by those who call themselves "evangelical Christians", have killed more people than Saddam Hussein. If Saddam was convicted because he killed Iraqis, should Bush administration officials and "Christians" be convicted too?
Saddam killed to maintain political control. Bush administration officials killed for money: oil and weapons and spy hardware profits.
"You shall not kill." Except when you really, really want to? -
Not religion, delusion. Read David Kuo's book.
Many people believe they are being religious when they are only deluding themselves. Many people in the U.S. feel a lot of stress, and they fantasize about the "end time", and hope that it will come soon, since they don't know how to deal with the conflicts in their lives. Most of those people are "one issue" voters, who don't pay much attention to managerial ability when they vote. Most of them voted for George W. Bush; they believe that George W. Bush is Christian and they believe he cares about them.
A Bush administration insider, David Kuo, wrote a book titled Tempting Faith in which he tells of the dishonesty of the Bush Administration. Crazily, he says he still believes that George W. Bush is a Christian, even though people at the top of the Bush administration, he says, call people like him &%^#$ evangelicals.
Karl Rove wrote scripts for George W. Bush to read that would manipulate evangelicals to think that G.W.B. is a Christian. If that deception had not worked, the average person in the U.S. would have a lot more money, the U.S. would be a more peaceful place, the U.S. would still be respected by other countries, we wouldn't have to watch so many stories about violence every day on the news, and we wouldn't have to watch comedians joke that the President of the United States is an idiot.
If you don't educate yourself about this, you are part of the problem rather than part of the solution. Here's my effort to do something more than just vote: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. Here's another Slashdot reader's effort: Letter to Congress regarding Iraq. What is yours? -
Weapons and spy contracts can be mostly secret.
Reading the comments posted above is chilling. Generally, people don't even begin to understand the issues.
Weapons and spy contracts can be mostly secret. In practice, that means there will be less supervision and much more opportunity to make and sell junk at very high profit. It is very common that an entire project is so poorly designed that it is useless; however, the politics is such that the failures are kept secret. The U.S. government has been corrupted by secrecy and dishonesty.
Here is my summary of U.S. government corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. I hope you will write your own summary and send it to friends and government leaders. -
Not just oil companies: Bush administration, too
The Bush administration is also manipulating the media: Bush Spent $1.6 Bil. on 'Spin'. The practice is illegal: Buying of News by Bush's Aides Is Ruled Illegal. The Bush administration believes that it can break laws: Bush challenges hundreds of laws. "Spinning" is an overly gentle word for lying. An October 24, 2006 Washington Post story, Spinning the Course explores a few of the lies which attempt to corrupt what the voters learn about their government.
That paragraph is from a summary of Bush administration corruption I wrote because I wanted to do more than just vote: The Bush administration found support for war through manipulation. I hope other people will write their own summaries.

Thanks, Jeremy.
"... they feel they have the right to take any action they desire..."
Thank you for saying that, Jeremy, and for your entire comment. (I don't want to address you by your Slashdot user name.)
I get scared when I look at the discussions on Slashdot and Digg.com about politics. I see that VERY FEW people understand the seriousness of the corruption in the U.S. government now. I wanted to do something more than just vote, so I made a summary of the corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -
Another billionaire who doesn't know any better.
Lucus must want money. He certainly wouldn't make another IJ movie because it would be interesting. It's pathetic when a billionaire is so addicted to money that he will do anything to get it, especially when what he will do to get money is sell people on the idea that violence is glamorous. We have the Iraq war because so many U.S. citizens are excited, not disgusted, by violence, any violence. And the war has made the U.S. poor and bankrupt.

My corruption summary. Please make your own. -
Slashdot incompetence selling company incompetence
This is another demonstration of Slashdot editor incompetence. The Slashdot story is apparently nothing but an advertisement for a commercial company formerly called Haval-Daar that seems completely incompetent and destined to fail immediately. There is apparently no connection with CERT whatsoever; the name is apparently intended only to confuse. Since the word havaldaar is apparently a Hindi word, I suppose Haval-Daar is a company started by people from India.
Did someone at Slashdot take money to advertise this company?
Let this be a lesson to those who spend a lot of time playing video games when they could be learning to be socially competent: If you don't learn about the people around you, you will eventually sink to the bottom of business.

U.S. government incompetence -
The corruption is really, really scary, actually.
Here's my summary of the corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. I would like to see other people write their own summaries.
Not only is the Bush administration destructive, but I'm tired of having a president who is routinely called an idiot. -
P.R. agency: The military is wonderful.
Fraud??? Definition: "A deception used to get unfair or unlawful gain." My guess is that some P.R. agency has a contract to try to get people to think good things about military expenditures, because Digg is also carrying a story about the wonderfulness of military behavior. The facts are this: Yes, trying to find new and more efficient ways of killing people sometimes accidentally gives some benefits to non-violent activities. However, the same amount of money spent on research would have brought far, far more.
Most of the U.S. military action since perhaps 1900 has been associated with trying to get some economic benefit for a few people who are able to manipulate the government. The U.S. government has invaded 24 countries since the 2nd World War.
This is my summary of U.S. government corruption, I would like to see other people make their own summaries: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -

Karl Rove did the managing.
"... NO ONE who manages to become president is dumb."
Agreed. But George W. Bush did not do the managing, Karl Rove did. GWB merely followed Karl Rove's script.

I thought they were joking!!!
That's disgusting, and funny! I thought they were joking in general. I didn't realize that they were demonstrating U.S. government corruption. (Big companies want lax patent and trademark practice so that they can use weak patents and trademarks to intimidate.)
Quoting again from the Despair, Inc. web site: "This is a defining moment in the history of intellectual property law. To extend official registration to an emoticon, one who's common usage predated the existence of the trademark holder by several years, defies common sense and establishes a dangerous precedent." Despair, Inc. is hassling the Trademark office about granting them a trademark!
(Here's a short summary I wrote of U.S. government corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.) -
Mod parent comment DOWN, not up!
Quote: The "personal firewall" in Windows XP SP2 was never advertised to block outgoing connections.
Why did people moderate that comment up? Microsoft never claimed it made good software, so the quality of its software should ignored?
George W. Bush never advertised himself as a moral person, so he shouldn't be impeached? The U.S. government never advertised itself as non-violent, so the fact that it has killed 650,000 Iraqis should be ignored? -
Experiences with T-Mobile
T-Mobile has been good for us. We paid $100 in the beginning for 1,000 minutes, which are good for a year. We don't use that much, and we extended the remaining minutes for another year by buying more minutes. (We use two-way radios and other methods of communicating.)
It is extremely offensive that phone companies think they can take away things for which you have paid, without giving anything in return by expiring the minutes. That is one of the many, many consequences of having a corrupt government.
T-Mobile has proven to be dis-organized and adversarial, but not nearly as adversarial as the other companies. There is a lot of really, really stupid game-playing. (Companies don't allow people to work in marketing now unless they have had a brainectomy.)
Here is a T-Mobile example: "Good news! You asked to hear your remaining time in minutes, and now you can..." That message, which has been playing for a year, refers to the fact that T-Mobile uses fake dollars, that are equivalent to as many minutes as T-Mobile says. The customer is not allowed to know the formula to calculate minutes per dollar, except that $100 is 1,000 minutes. (Really, not kidding.)
T-Mobile will unlock your phone free after three months, so you can use it on a different network. That service may be tied to the idea of the customer traveling to another country.
T-Mobile uses the GSM cellular protocol, which is the best, by far, and is used throughout Europe and most of the world. If you plan to travel to other countries, you will need a quad-band phone like the Motorola Razr V3.
T-Mobile has international service with is very, very expensive, so you always want to get a SIM card from a GSM service provider in the country you are visiting. -
The problem is more fundamental than "burnout".
The problem is more fundamental than "burnout". The problem is an overall breakdown in U.S. society. For example, the U.S. government has become very corrupt: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.
The U.S. has a higher percentage of its citizens in prison than any country, ever, more than 6 times the percentage of those in prison in European countries.
The U.S. is the most obese country in the world, except for a small island nation in which people eat a lot of coconut. -

Realize that the people at Fujitsu are dedicated professionals -- dedicated to work-avoidance -- and because they work for the company they are at the top of the work-avoidance hierarchy.
The work avoidance plan that is typical in situations like this is that the main company licenses a limited number of other companies, and it is those companies that might stoop so low as to actually serve the customer. The trick is to find one of those other companies that will sell for a reasonable price rather than 30% of the cost of a new laptop.
If it really is impossible to buy after-market parts for Fujitsu products, then certainly don't buy from Fujitsu.

One again: Trying to trick the customers.
I hope companies will see this for what it is: An attempt by Microsoft to do with a license trick what they are not able to accomplish with product quality.
There is a social breakdown happening at Microsoft. Bill Gates is, apparently, no longer interested. The company is becoming more and more unable to complete projects.
Microsoft never competed very well on technological merits, but now things are becoming worse. People think that Microsoft has been successful, but the company's success has always depended on tricking customers who don't have much technical knowledge. As customers become more technically knowledgeable, they realize more and more that Microsoft is adversarial.
We who read Slashdot can make a difference. We can explain the issues to everyone we know and meet.

Okay, maybe this is just a guess.

Tranax ATM hacked. Voting machines hacked.
Here's a story about a Tranax ATM being hacked: ATM Hack Uncovered. They discussed this on Digg: ATM Hack Uncovered.
Diebold voting machines are certainly not secure: Insecure voting. Be sure to watch the HBO Special, "Hacking Democracy", linked there and mentioned in an earlier Slashdot front page story.
It's not that there is specific information about hacking Diebold ATMs. It's that there is so much information indicating that Diebold is not interested in security. -

Part of the problem is inconvenience.
The problem of users not cooperating with security rules is largely a social problem, not a technical one, and needs social investigation.
We found that one of the biggest reasons people don't cooperate is that it takes too long to report problems, and they don't want the inconvenience.
We wrote a program that sends a screen copy to us by email when the user presses Windows_Key-F11. That makes it easy to get users to report problems that show some evidence on the screen.
If it is easy to report problems, the feeling of cooperation grows and eventually users learn that cooperation benefits them. Online bug reporting software helps, too.

Talking about power, anyone need Diebold parts? You must have an account with them, but hey, no problem, right? Just tell the local elections boss, "Oh yes, we'll need two of those fazongas immediately." Response: "Well, if you say so, order them now." Check out the memory card at $155.00 for 128 MB. Ohhh, it's "industrial grade". Well, all right.
Off topic: Did you know that George W. Bush had a top-of-the-charts song written about him? The song, "American idiot", was number 1 on the music charts in Canada, number 3 in Britain, and in the top 10 in many other countries. No matter whether you vote Democrat or Republican, you'll have to admit that is amazing.

Data shows the Republican Part is NOT conservative
"I encourage you to examine the growth of the debt under some recent presidents."
Here's a chart up to 2003: U.S. Federal Deficit by Political Party. The Republican party is NOT "conservative".
Some parts of the Republican Party are respectable, but other parts are like organized crime. I wrote an article about that: George W. Bush Comedy and Tragedy.
The first section of the article, Funniest George W. Bush comedy videos, examines the facts that show George W. Bush is the most disrespected president in U.S. history. Did you know that the song "American Idiot", about George W. Bush, was at or near the top of the musical charts in several countries?
This section, Remarkable occurrences involving the Bush family, is not funny, but it is interesting that George W. Bush knew a brother of Osama bin Laden before the attacks on 9/11/2001, and there are other equally remarkable events.
For those who can handle very intense horror movies, there are several links in the article to free movies that are guaranteed to keep you awake at night. -

Re:The Sad Fact of the MatterActually two corrections to your comment are in order. Both are the results of what republicans say and people repeat allthough they are factually false:
1) republicans say that democrats use class politics, but in fact democrats haven't done so in decades. Questioning this administration's tax policies, or its response to Katrina, is not stirring class or race resentment.
2) republicans claim to be the party of "conservative fiscal policy", but they stopped being that party with Eisenhower. This image, compiled with government data, illustrates the fact that every republican administration since Nixon substantially increased the deficit, while democratic administrations substantially reduced it or left it unchanged.

Illegal spying: Britain and U.S. governments
On the Charlie Rose show last night, an ABC newscaster said that the U.S. and British governments spy on each other's citizens, doing things that would be illegal in their home countries, and share that information with each other.
It should be mentioned that the U.S. and British governments have been killing Arabs and interfering with Arab governments for more than 40 years, and that's what started the terrorism. See this very brief summary: History surrounding the U.S. wars with Iraq: Four short stories. They did this to increase oil and other profits, the same as now.

The U.S. government has been helping oil companies
Most people don't understand the background. The U.S. government has been helping oil companies in secret since before 1950, and that has led to an expectation by rich oil investors that the U.S. government will lower the cost of doing business by getting the U.S. taxpayer to pay for security arrangements. The U.S. government secretly, or semi-secretly, breaks the law, kills people, including Arabs and Muslims, and and destroys the property of anyone who stands in the way of oil and other profits. Here is a short summary of the kinds of actions that have caused the U.S. government to be corrupted: History surrounding the U.S. wars with Iraq: Four short stories.
The U.S. government is in dire circumstances. Money is being taken from the people and given to the rich in enormous quantities. See the old article, U.S. Federal Deficit by Political Party.
See how much things have gotten worse since then: National Debt. Oil and weapons investors profit: Cost of Iraq War.

CERTAINLY not saying only Microsoft is abusive.
"... singling out Microsoft when every other company does the same thing, is blatant hypocrisy."
I am CERTAINLY not saying only Microsoft is abusive. The U.S. government has invaded 24 countries since the 2nd world war, and killed people and destroyed their property in each of them.
Consider also the Enron fraud, the WorldCom fraud, and the Tyco fraud.
