Republicans cost FAR more.
Republicans cost FAR more. Do some research: U.S. government debt. During the administration of George W. Bush, 5 trillion dollars of debt was added to U.S. government debt.

Slashdotters use WinXP. Vint Cerf said it's true.
Most people who connect to Slashdot use Windows. It's the reality of working in the computer field today.
Vint Cerf said it's true. Quote from your sig: ' "During My Service In The United States Congress, I Took The Initiative In Creating The Internet." -Al Gore'
Several years ago I asked Vint Cerf about that, and he said it is true. Vint Cerf, and many other people, connected a lot of computers together, in a project called ArpaNet, which was then a scheme by the U.S. government to make killing people and destroying property more efficient. Originally you could only connect if you worked for a company with "Defense" (killing-related) contracts.
Al Gore made ArpaNet the public utility it is today. Vint Cerf, and others, had technical power. Al Gore had the political power to take the network away from the control of those who study how to kill, and make it available to everyone. Al Gore's initiative was strongly opposed by many of those who had access, including someone I knew at Tektronix at the time, because they didn't want commercial involvement.
Most politicians at the time didn't even know how to type. Keyboards were for secretaries. The head of IBM at the time didn't have a computer in his office! (Former IBM CEO Lou Gerstner said that in his book, Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?)
Al Gore's involvement showed technical foresight then far more advanced than that of almost all or all politicians today.
There are two parts of the Republican Party, a real party, and a party of corruption. The party of corruption sells favors from the U.S. government to whomever pays the most. One of the ways they do that is by finding angry people and helping them act out their anger by supplying them with words that have been market-tested for believability. Example: The Republicans are not "Conservative". That apply that term to themselves because they know it will get votes.
Being hostile toward Al Gore was part of what they did to put George W. Bush in office, only that. -
The Republican Party is not "conservative".
Exactly. The Republican Party is not "conservative". That word is only used to get votes. In fact, the Republican Party has put the U.S. government into far more debt.
There are, in effect, two Republican Parties. One is a real political party. The other is extremely corrupt and merely says anything necessary to get control. The real purpose is control, not managing the U.S. government for its citizens. For example, search digg.com and reddit.com for the term "martial law".
There has been conflict of interest because of the fact that the president and vice-president and their families and friends and associates have a history of investment in oil and weapons. The purpose of invading Iraq was to get control of the oil supply, so that the price of oil would rise. Saddam Hussein was not cooperating; he was selling as much oil as he wanted.
The reason for the U.S. government's plan to invade Iran is to further restrict the supply of oil. If the U.S. government invades, the price of oil could easily become $8 per gallon; it is necessary to have oil to make our societies function; people would have to pay any price.
Also, his name is "Barack" Obama, as others have noted. I wish Slashdot editors could be real editors, and check their work. -

... That was George H. W. Bush, not Junior. Imagine him being that silly, and pulling his own strings! -
Other ways to simplify your life...

Insufficient knowledge of how the world works.
Terrible error.
You should not be allowed to post comments on Slashdot if you don't know some basic things about the software industry. For example, since April 1, 1994 Microsoft Owns the Catholic Church.
Also, the U.S. government is NOT a subsidiary of Microsoft. They are both subsidiaries of the same organization, "Do Evil if You Can". For example, see Remarkable occurrences involving the Bush family. -
The U.S. government is very corrupt.
"Now it [privacy] all seems like just another bit of cynical, focus-group-tested PR."
The U.S. government has become extremely corrupt. One method is the one mentioned, testing for weaknesses in public understanding, or willingness to act, and exploiting those weaknesses.
Here are others:
Making sure that honest, public-minded leaders from both parties are defeated.
Giving bills in Congress misleading names, like "Protect America".
Giving bills misleading features and widely publicizing the misleading features. For example, the "economic stimulus" bill only causes the government, which is deeply in debt, to print more money. That will make the value of the dollar go down even further. The "economic stimulus" bill also contains provisions to funnel money to banks. The banks apparently deliberately created the mortgage finance crisis doing so was profitable, and because banks were sure that the U.S. government would pass a bill to lessen the losses. -
Are speed tests accurate?
Quote: "OK why are folks just plain stupid."
Better question: "Why are folks just plain abusive?" Lots of Slashdot readers seem to think that, if they know something someone else doesn't, the other person is stupid. So maybe an even better question is, "Why are some people lacking in social skills?" Social ability can be learned; teach yourself.
"They have built out the back end to support high speed bidirectional traffic and this can be seen by the lack of complaints by users on sites such as dslreports.com and others."
Don't all internet providers test for speed measuring tools and make sure they give them good bandwidth?

The word "conservative" should never be used.
"A news channel with a fundamentally conservative outlook..."
The word "conservative" should never be used. "Conservatives" are not conservative. Republicans only use that word because opinion testing showed that it tested well with voters. -
Segway carries a "Risk of Death" label.
See the Segway "Risk of Death" label.
Apparently that protects Segway legally from the fact that it is VERY dangerous if you happen to hit something close to the diameter of its small wheels, like a hole or a rock.
I don't think the Segway owner should have a lot of credibility. -
Only those that kill people are SERIOUSLY arrogant
"Us Europeans are on the whole just as ignorant and arrogant as Americans, it's just we're ignorant and arrogant about different things"
Oh yeah? How many Iraqis did you Swedes kill? Did Sweden invade 24 countries since the 2nd world war? Did Sweden kill directly or cause the deaths of 11,000,000 people since then?
Sweden is the 7th most peaceful country on the planet. Only those countries that kill other people are SERIOUSLY arrogant. -
The U.S. government is very corrupt.
People in the U.S. are, generally, very ignorant about the corruption in the U.S. government.
The U.S. does not have a problem with Iran, except for the problems the U.S. government makes. The U.S. government is manipulated by Cheney and others to use taxpayer's money to get control of oil, so that oil prices will rise. Saddam Hussein was not cooperating with that, and Iran isn't either.
The U.S. government makes very violent threats, and, when Iran reacts and replies, tells U.S. citizens that Iran is a threat.
It is necessary to have a government with enough social sophistication that it can live in the world without killing other people, and the U.S. does not have that government. The U.S. government has invaded at least 24 countries since the second world war, and is responsible for the deaths of perhaps 11 million people. All of that violence was done for profit for people who were already rich. People who have been born in wealthy families often feel that it is their right to kill other people.
For a few details about U.S. government corruption, see George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.

Facts about the U.S. government:
Present-day realities of the U.S. government:
Bush does not run the U.S. government. He is only a figurehead provided by people who want corruption. There is no evidence he has ever been mentally engaged enough to understand the workings of government.
The word "conservative" is only a word used by people like Karl Rove ("Bush's Brain") to get political support. Those who call themselves conservative aren't conservative except towards someone else's corruption.
Bush is an alcoholic (possibly a dry alcoholic), from a family of alcoholics. His grandfather was a violent alcoholic. Expect lies and violence from powerful alcoholics.
Alcoholics aren't religious. The pretense of religion is only a way of getting elected. Those who want corruption will say or do anything to get elected. They try to find and exploit the weaknesses of those who are less educated and less informed.
Saddam Hussein would not restrict the flow of oil, so the other powers could not get control over the price of oil. The invasion of Iraq was to restrict the flow of oil so that prices would rise. This benefited oil company investors like Cheney and Bush and their associates, like "Prince" Bandar, the Saudi with whom G.W. Bush has been photographed holding hands, as he has with other Saudis.
People from rich families often arrive at the conclusion that it is their right to kill other people to make money. They don't do the killing themselves, of course, but get others to do it.

No one in N.Z. kills other people as gov. policy.
You said, "And Americans don't have a problem is exaggerated self-importance?"
Are you implying that, if I say one thing is true, then therefore you assume I think all other things are false?
No one in N.Z. kills other people as part of U.S. government policy. I wouldn't say that some of those in power in the U.S. government have "exaggerated self-importance". I think it is more accurate to say they are extraordinarily arrogant to the point that their arrogance is crippling mental illness. See George W. Bush comedy and tragedy and Coups Arranged or Backed by the USA. Sadly, those in power in the U.S. government believe that it is okay kill for profit. -

It is NSA organization policy to lie.
MOD PARENT UP!!
"Yeah we need a serious change, like admitting that all this cloak and dagger, sorry that is classified, need to know, bullshit is the cause of most of the terrorist problems we have today. Drop the secrecy, and disassemble these above-the-law organizations. Dealing with policy in the open is the only way to keep it honest. When the government is dishonest with the nation about policy you do not have democracy, you have 'democracy theater' "
Few people have as good an understanding of U.S. government corruption as you. The violence of the U.S. government is dictated by people like Bush using the government to make money. That can only happen if there is secrecy.
NOTHING the NSA says can be trusted. It is NSA organization policy to lie to get what they want.
Also, no one should think they know the names of all the secret, but taxpayer-funded, organizations. "NSA" is just a public relations term, to try to get you to think you know what is happening.
If you are a U.S. citizen, you are paying to be mistreated. -
My previous comments on this subject.
Refilling old Canon printers.
$8,000 per gallon for mostly cheap solvent.
It is amazing to me how much people are willing to accept abuse. It seems that every organization, from the U.S. government down, is trying to compete by being abusive rather than by earning money honestly. For a short summary of U.S. government abuses see: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -
Publicly killing kittens? Publicly killing people.
Bush has certainly done worse than publicly bite the heads off kittens. He has killed more than 650,000 Iraqis in a very public scheme to restrict the flow of oil from Iraq, and thus cause oil prices to rise. (Saddam Hussein was selling oil by trucking it through Turkey. Iraq has 20% of the known reserves of oil.)
The truth is much, much worse than any one person can document. But I tried to write a summary: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -
Contest: Who can be the most crazy?
This is a race to see who can be the most expensive, adversarial, angry, destructive, and lacking in social sophistication. I've had Chinese friends and acquaintances in 5 countries, and I'm betting on the U.S. government being more mentally ill than the Chinese government.
Frankly, that's what it is, a kind of socially contagious mental illness.
I work for the day when the U.S. government is able to live in the world without killing other people. The mental illness of the U.S. government encourages unstable government leaders everywhere to be more unstable.
The U.S. government's killing is motivated by the desire of a few rich people to make more money. For example, see: Coups Arranged or Backed by the USA.
I love the United States. Do you? If you do, show it by resisting the craziness. -
Try the logic of mental illness.
I agree. However, I feel uncomfortable with the fact that most people who try to reason about the destruction of the ideals and reputation of their country use normal logic, when the logic of mental illness is sometimes more powerful.
Once someone begins killing for money they find themselves unable to stop, and their killing becomes bolder and bolder.
If you love the U.S., you will help her in her time of need. My help is a summary of some of the most important points of Bush administration corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -
Mental illness feeds on itself.
Putin wants to increase the threat of violence because it allows him to have more control.
Bush wants to increase the threat of violence because it allows him to have more control.
Bush's actions give Putin a chance to increase the threat of violence so he can have more control.
Then threatening actions by Putin give Bush a chance to increase the threat of violence so he can have more control.
Mental illness feeds on itself.
See the free 3-part BBC movie: The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear.
Threatening violence is only one of the formulas of manipulation. Here are others: The Bush administration found support for war through manipulation.
(If you are a U.S. citizen and you don't like my summary of U.S. government corruption, you must write your own. You can't say you love your country if you abandon thinking clearly when your country is in trouble.) -
Outsourcing is for secrecy, which means corruption
The purpose of outsourcing is avoiding the rules and laws of government, and achieving greater secrecy.
A secret government is a corrupt government.
The present intensification of secrecy began in the late 40's with establishment of the idea that the government could secretly manipulate governments and kill people to protect the profits of U.S. companies, particularly oil companies.
With enough secrecy, a government becomes a dictatorship.
Both Cheney and Junior are alcoholics, with typical alcoholic personalities. (Even though alcoholics may not be drinking, the personality persists.)
Alcoholics always or almost always have anger problems. Angry people who are powerful enough may act out their anger by killing people. Alcoholics almost always want to keep things secret, because part of their personality disorder is that they don't face their conflicts. For more about the effect of alcoholism, see The behavior of Bush and Cheney is consistent with the behavior of alcoholics. Bush and Cheney arrest Records.
It amazes me how easily U.S. citizens have given up their freedoms and the excellent principles on which the great country of the United States was founded. It amazes me that U.S. citizens are willing to work a full month every year to pay for the corruption, to pay for a few ignorant, conflicted people to have their way. -

The least sophisticated way of relating is killing
The biggest shared project of U.S. citizens and the U.S. government, by far, is killing other people. Every U.S. citizen works an extra two months a year so that he or she can contribute to the killing.
The least sophisticated way of relating to other people is killing them. The blowback from that is obvious on any street in the United States. People are unhappy because they have been killing other people. They react to their unhappiness, increasingly, by eating too much. The U.S. is now the most obese nation on earth, in the history of the world. The ugliness of what U.S. citizens do is now apparent even just looking at their bodies.
I've tried to document some of the killing, but it is far, far too big a job for one person working without pay just for the love of his country: History surrounding the U.S. wars with Iraq: Four short stories .
The U.S. government has killed directly or indirectly about 11 million people since the end of the second world war. Most of them were killed for profit, but many of them were killed because there are people in government who like to kill, especially because someone else pays. A lot of government killing happens for the same reason that people like to play violent video games: They don't know any better way to handle the anger they have because they received bad parenting.
The U.S. government has become much more corrupt, and there is a danger the U.S. will become a (hidden) dictatorship: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. -

How many Iraqis has Lula killed? Zero.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
I wrote this, documenting part of the social breakdown: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy. I love the U.S. and think that anyone who loves something will not abandon it when there are troubles.
Brazil has enormous social problems, it's true. But how many countries has Brazil invaded since the 2nd world war? Zero. The U.S. has invaded 24. How many people in other countries have died since the 2nd world war as a result of Brazilian government action: Maybe zero. People who have studied the situation say that, directly and indirectly, the U.S. government is responsible for the deaths of 8 to 11 million people since the end of the 2nd world war.
Another subject: I am more comfortable with U.S. women than they are with themselves, I've found. My many women friends, in the U.S. and in other countries, don't disagree with this idea, although they express it differently. -

What should happen is impeachment of Cheney and Jr
The Bush administration is so corrupt that it is difficult for one person even to summarize all the corruption. But I tried: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy

My observations are based on personal experience.
Very interesting comment. However, I did not intend to link what I said to anyone else. I made the comment about Caucasians coming from the Caucasus because of my own personal experience with Iranian friends. (In spite of the Bush administration's attempts to demonize Iran, I have found Iranians to be very friendly.)
What I observed is that Iranians originally from northern Iran have a lighter skin color than those from the south of Iran. I am talking about Iranians who know their extended ancestry, of course, not about people who recently moved to either region.
It seems that when darker-skinned people intermarry with people from the Caucasas, the lighter skin tends to become the norm. That's all.

Exactly. Never bother with Microsoft software until Service Pack 2. Maybe experiencing a lot of pain will earn you a higher place in heaven, but you would have to die to take advantage of that.

Use LedgerSMB, not SQL-Ledger.

If you are interested in this subject, I suggest you make einhverfr your friend on Slashdot. Then you will receive notice of all his journal entries.
einhverfr makes a very good case that you should use LedgerSMB, not SQL-Ledger.

You are as serious as you should be: Not serious.
When Slashdotters think that a story is fraudulent, they don't say it is fraud, they just make lots of jokes. If the first 50 comments are mostly jokes, then you know the story must have some fake element.
It could happen to you: If you spend your time playing video games instead of learning about the world, you too can be so ignorant that you fall for every foolish, easily disproved theory.

Remarkable Occurrences Involving the Bush Family -
ERROR: Acting knowledgeable.
This is a phenomenon I have seen numerous times. Someone acts like he is very knowledgeable, but says erroneous things. Was he paid to make a pro-Microsoft comment, or is he just arrogant?
The registry vastly decreased the value of the operating system. Microsoft corrupted its own product to try to prevent easy piracy. I don't think that strategy worked, but the corruption remains. In the end, the world will reject an OS that puts all configuration in one file, because that is too fragile, and difficult when a program needs to be moved.
It is possible to move Windows XP to a new computer merely by re-loading Windows XP from the CD. Programs like Acronis TrueImage Universal Restore even allow restoring a backup to a machine with a different HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer).

Firefox development sometimes resembles playing.
I think you missed an overall point that the original commenter had in mentioning one particular shortcoming of interest to him. Firefox development is haphazard. There is insufficient overall guidance of the process. Because there is insufficient guidance, Firefox development sometimes resembles playing.
For example, see this Slashdot comment: Mozilla Foundation Top 20 Excuses for Not Fixing Firefox Bugs. In my attempts to report bugs in Firefox, Firefox developers have used every one of those excuses, some of them many times. If you look within Slashdot stories about Firefox, you will find many comments about Firefox developers abusing those who report bugs.
In comments like those posted here, people often talk about some shortcoming in Firefox that occurs to them at the time they are writing the comment, and fail to make the overall point, that there are a lot of issues receiving little or no attention, not just the one they mention.
The head of the Mozilla Foundation is Winifred Mitchell Baker, a woman who is very uncomfortable socially, like many people with technical knowledge. However, she has NO technical knowledge. She is a perfect example of the fact that someone with no technical knowledge cannot guide a technical company.
In the beginning, Winifred got the job because no one thought there was money in free software, and the effort to improve the Mozilla browser was very small. But then Google started paying for Google Search to be to the right of the address bar in Firefox. Now Mozilla Foundation makes millions of dollars, and Winifred can afford to hire people to do public relations to cover her incompetence.
The linked information about Mozilla Foundation income is from someone on the board of directors of the Mozilla Corporation, who says in the linked blog that the nickname of the Mozilla Foundation is MoFo. It appears that the lack of social ability is more widespread than just affecting the president. Or maybe he is socially aware, and the association is intentional.
Firefox is the most unstable program in common use . What people call the memory hogging bug is actually also a CPU hogging bug, and it is still present in Firefox version 2.0.0.3, even though the bug was reported more than 4 years ago.
If you open a lot of windows and tabs in Firefox on a laptop, and put the laptop in and out of standby, you will eventually notice that the laptop fan is running all the time, even when there is no activity. That's the CPU bug, and it can potentially shorten the life of your laptop.
I could write more, but I have to unload all my Firefox windows and tabs before I am finished working with them, because now that I opened more windows and tabs to do research to find links for this comment, Firefox is using as much about 40% of my CPU as reported by Windows Task Manager, and I don't like the way it slows my computer. (This is not a dramatization, it is an actual fact; I just started my laptop from standby to begin working this morning at about 7 AM Brazil time, where I happen to be at the moment.)
I am also putting this comment on my web site, so that I can make corrections if I find that there is some error. -
More money to kill people means less at home.
Many people in the U.S. are too poor to afford a computer or a monthly charge for internet access. Part of the problem is all of the money that was once partly theirs is being spent to kill other people.

You know that Slashdot readers don't really believe the article when all the first comments are attempts at jokes.

Is Roland Piquepaille paid for Slashdot stories?
Roland_Piquepaille, the submitter of this story, is apparently a publicist. Apparently he is paid to have stories placed in media like Slashdot.
Mr. Piquepaille's affiliations and motivations should be disclosed. Does he pay someone at Slashdot to run his stories?
Also, for me, computing is an important area of continuing interest. Most of Mr. Piquepaille's stories, like this one, have very little real connection to computing, so they waste my time. I'm not the only one annoyed by this, apparently: Here is a script to Hide stories submitted by Roland Piquepaille from Slashdot.org.
Digg.com or Reddit.com are more appropriate media for Mr. Piquepaille. However, I suspect that his stories would seldom be considered interesting enough to be placed on the Digg or Reddit front pages.

An Open Message to Steve Ballmer
Mr. Ballmer,
I think you hide from yourself the true nature of your business. Your company makes a lot of money because of many, many adversarial practices like tricky, closed file formats, mixing program files and operating system files, and actually encouraging piracy of your products so that competitors cannot make money.
Your company has never, as far as I am aware, released an excellent product. Windows XP was terribly buggy and troublesome until Service Pack 2. You waste the time of millions of well-educated people. You deliberately manage your business in such a way that programmers are not allowed to finish their jobs. Programmers know how to make very secure software, but your software has had literally hundreds of thousands of expoits. A large part of the money you make comes from people buying new computers because their old computers have become infected. When you are told of an exploit, you often take many months to fix it, showing your true self and your true belief in how to live in the world by taking advantage. (Internet Explorer was 78% unpatched when I wrote this.)
I think you should not think of yourself as primarily a business man. You should think of yourself as primarily an abuser.

If you truly love a woman, you will stick with her when she has troubles. If you truly love a country, you will still be intensely involved even when bad things are happening. -
Ignorant Diebold managers destroyed the company.
"The company is concerned that this relatively small and marginally profitable unit is hurting the company's overall image."
That's absurd. Diebold's voting machines have destroyed the company's image completely, in my opinion. Seriously, if you know something about the history and you have a little technical knowledge, would you ever buy anything from Diebold?
DEADbold.

My summary of U.S. gov corruption. Where's your's? -
The Bush administration is the most corrupt...
The Bush administration is the most corrupt administration the U.S. has ever had. Here is my summary of the corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.
I find it scary how little U.S. citizens know about the activities of their government. Part of the reason is that the Bush administration uses the same method of abuse Microsoft uses. Both exploit the fact that it is difficult for people to defend against many, many abuses, each small in themselves. Both, in my opinion, use sophisticated public relations methods to sell their lies.
I hope you will write your own summary of U.S. government corruption and send it to your elected representatives.
