Re:Take all the time you need, to get it right
There haven't been any Microsoft software glitches.
AHAHAHAHAA. Maybe you should take your own advice and play PGR3 --- potentially the glitchiest launch title ever. And let's not forget other stuff like the COD2 save bug.
The 360 is over a million out the door. It is far ahead of the PS2 pace 2 months into release.
No it's not, unless you believe your idiotic ps2 launch numbers which you've been spamming over the boards. The PS2 sold a million in the first 24 hours . The fact that it's taken the 360 a few months to get there is telling.
As for the current numbers, let's check NDP sales figures for december:
(source: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=81022&pag e=4&pp=50)
PS2 - ~1.5 million
PSP - ~1.12 million
DS - ~1.07 million
Xbox - ~415K
Xbox 360 - 281,441
GBA 1,213,196
GCN 606,423

The numbers speak for themselves. Note that these numbers are for the U.S., where the Xbox has it's largest marketshare. We're not even talking about Europe and Japan.
No real nex-gen games? Play Kameo, COD2 and PGR3 on any TV with the full 1080 resolution. You are blind to call them non "nexgen".
Oddly enough, not a single one of those games actually runs at 1080i or 1080p resolution. They are either at 720 or 600p (in the case of PGR3). As for them being "next gen," simply take note of the fact that most of the 2005 best graphics awards went to FEAR (a PC-exclusive title).
Sony will fail with the PS3 unless they pull the plug on Blu-Ray. The system will cost about twice that of the 360 with less features (online play) and less games (same stuff minus Halo).
Please, spare us your idiocy. You haven't got a clue about the price of the PS3, as does no one else besides a select few at Sony. As for your "same stuff minus Halo" comment, I'm still waiting to see a real FF game, or Gran Turismo, or something as innovative as Katamari Damacy or Shadow of the Colossus on an Xbox console. In fact, I'd like to see something that isn't a generic FPS/Sports game and isn't a PC or PS2 port. -

Very Bad News From First 360 Owners
If you thought backwards compatibility was bad from having to download patches just to play old games and the limited selection of games actually supported, read this:
http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=72168
It sounds like 360 backwards compatibility has turned out to be nothing more than poorly implemented ports that will require future porting to be playable.
And if that wasn't bad enough news, there are huge numbers of people reporting overheating related crashes. It sounds like all those reports of 360s constantly crashing at Walmarts were true and had nothing to do with non-final hardware.
Mixed with the poor reviews for the 360 launch lineup and system itself...
Man, I would love to hear from someone who actually wasted 500+ bucks on this disaster what the hell they were thinking. -
In this thread
Should read:
As you can see in a scan posted in this thread, Goofy, Donald and that cutie Sora are fully decked out in the duds of the Master Control Program universe, as well as Mr. Kevin Flynn himself, Jeff Bridges. -

To me, it looks a tad bit brighter than the PSP, though it could just be the color palette. It's almost too close to tell, though. -
Re:porting
Carmack mentioned during his keynote that the PSP should be able to handle Quake 3 level graphics, but I'm not sure if that means it would be able to handle a port of Quake 3.

Re:It's a little bit of everything
Your numbers betray you, indeed it grows but most people are content with offlien play
People used to say the same thing about cable. Look where it's at now. Once people try online gaming, they're hooked. If you assume an even distribution of gamers for Xbox & PS2 are interested in online gaming, then this would yield a significant increase in market share and initial sales for the Xbox360.
little under half of them cannot pay anything a month
If they can't afford $50, they can't afford to purchase a single video game, and they certainly can't afford a console. Oh wait, their parents bought them that stuff? Gee, I wonder what else fits in the xmas stocking ...
But when it came out, it was the cheapest (or close to) thing in Japan that played DVD's. You are forgetting when the machiens firts came out $500 for a panasonic DVd player was par for the course, for the same price you could get a PS2. Thats why PS2 has such a huge install base and that's why sony waited until blu-ray to make the PS3. Their gambling on a similiar effect.
There is a difference this time around: Blu-ray isn't "the" established standard. People aren't going to be purchasing them because they want both a next gen movie format + game box -- they don't know which format will come on top. This means that only people who are convinced that blu-ray will come out on top will consider this a good deal.
You also have a GPU whose instruction sets and design are IP of a company that wants nothing to do with the box. They could just obstract it back into pure Direct X and nto the xbox variant but they will nee dgame specific hacks.
Microsoft made announcment awhile back about having licensed the appropriate IP. In fact, you can read about it here: http://www.gamepro.com/microsoft/xbox360/games/new s/45969.shtml
Have you ever run an emulator? Generally every game varies, some are 100% other have graphic glitches ect.. The PS2 incorporated the PS1 chip as a IO processor and it even had glitches. Now a 100% software solution is possible, but you need unique software hacks for a lot of games.
Exactly right. No solution will be 100% compatible, which is why you didn't see absurd statements about the xbox 360 being 100% compatible with the xbox (and why I scoff every time Sony claims 100% backwards compatibility, because it is a baldfaced lie). They're targeting as many games as possible, starting with the most popular games and working their way down the list. It is certainly an accomplishable goal, unlike your previous statement where you said it would be impossible.
But don't take my word for it; you can read what the guy actually making it work has to say about it: http://www.qbrundage.com/michaelb/pubs/essays/xbox 360.html
You can also read a few more details about how they plan on performing the emulation here: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=50574
I doubt that the compatibility will be near the 100% level, but I'd be willing to bet that they hit 80%. And personally, I could give a crap if "Bob's adventures in peanut land" works if the games I want to play don't (this was the problem with the PS2 ... half of my [admitedly small] PS1 library didn't work right on the PS2).
And if MS is going to be Backwards compatable they would have trumpetted it as a feature. I hear very little buzz about that.
They announced it at E3. What else do you expect them to be doing at this point? -

For those that have never seen polgygon man here is a forum discussion that has a scan of the ad. Too lazy to do proper html:

Re:Anyone else getting deja vu?
IIRC PS2 was thought as very costly with DVD back then. Xbox 1 arrived 1.5 year after PS2, so your comparison is weird anyway.
BTW, PS3 is not 'fridge-sized beast'. It's almost the same size as Xbox 360 and smaller than Xbox 1.
Just check out this pic.

Re:don't link to gamespot or gamespy please
www.gaming-age.com is a great resource (IMHO), the content on the message boards vary from very useful and insightful information/reviews to borderline trolling though.

GMR will be missed.
GMR was a great magazine, while it lasted. Can't accout for XBM, but I hear it was pretty damn fine itself...
The biggest problem I have with the whole situation is that the realization came after an Electronics Boutique email was posted on an internet forum.
I feel for the guys that lost their labors of love yesterday--and to find it out that way? Jeez. -
Not only is it missing download play...
...but also, apparently an entire mode.
Dristone/Drillstone mode is a sort of RPG mode, and I guess the US version doesn't have it--Namco did reply to an inquiry about the exclusion of some features here.
"We didn't have the time to implement the some elements/features in order to make the DS launch date in North America,"
Which is kind of funny, as they launched simultaneously.
