Re:MPlayer in Windows
Try Media Player Classic (MPC or Mplayerc) - it's a slim client with built in codecs too. It can use Windows' codecs or its own copy.

Re:Sub
You don't need them to release a "version"
Just get the legit DVD and a subtitle file, and grab Media Player Classic. Disable the DVD subs and load the fansub file.
That's what I did with some bootleg "Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone Complex" disks. One of the disks just was horribly unsinc'd and badly translated.

Re:Try TermSvc or VNC
Try Media Player Classic (also on sourceforge) with web interface turned on.
Works great. -
Re:Nit-pickers...
Media Player Classic lets you play any video file in Windows. This appears to be the site, but it's under construction, so here is an alternate source. The interface seeks to emulate MS Media Player version 6.4, before it went crazy. When encountering a codec it doesn't know, it queries a site to install it.

3.11 Anyone ;)
I never did like this DivX Pro nonsense. Am I the only one to never make the jump from 3.11
;) to 5.0? I tried installing it once on a new system but hated all the crap that came bundled with it as well as the idea to pay for it. AFAIK, (which in this area, admittedly isn't far) I still haven't found any files that I couldn't play. There are however alternatives. The Kazaa Lite codec pack is a good place to start, and it even included software to play Quicktime and RealMedia files without the attrocious software they come bundled with. Combine that with Media Player Classic and you have a robust, fully functional, and FREE media player under Windows, without the extra crap you don't need anyway! -
Re:Saved?
Two things about upgrading to WMP 9.0
1st - Don't :P
2nd - Media Player Classic has the look and feel of MP 6.4 but with more features, check it out. -
You might want to try this.
The people of Kazaa Lite fame (if I am not mistaken) created this nice little package called Real Alternative which is Media Player Classic and the Real codecs package in one.
Play those nice Real movies without the cruddy Real player! -
Re:Here's Another Download Link
Windows Media Player Classic
Combines the older and much better WMP 6.4 interface and the capability to play Real Media, Windows Media, and Quicktime. It works extremely well, I highly recommend getting it.

Re:Just great...
Take a look at Media Player Classic. It's a great little player modelled after the great little MS Media Player v6. Launches fast, playlist, plays DVDs and video from a video capture card.
