More Free Games
Game Hippo
not always the best (they tend to be remise on some of the newer games/updates), but always worth looking through.
Also, check out Acid Bomb and Bacteria 2 if you really like logic puzzles. Both are easy to get into and verymuch on the addictive side! -
I miss Epic
The first couple paragraphs reminded me of all the great games that I used to play from epic and the other companies like them.
we need more games like that.
GameHippo is currently where I (LEGALY) get my fix for those types of games for anyone else getting the craving. -
Re:Idea toshut up Jack Thompson
It wasn't too long ago Jack made the proposterous suggestion that someone make a video game about killing violent video game producers. Not surpristingly, it happened:

Sadly, this did nothing to curb Jack from the errors of his ways. He's still preaching that inattentive parenting isn't as important a factor on kids' behavior as their virtual entertainment. -
best are retro
Speaking of which, one of the best games I've played is a retro freeware game similar to early NES games like metroid. Cave Story is the top downloaded game on gamehippo, highly rated, and has awesome replay value. Check it out (originally in japanese).

Isn't this already done?
How is this site different from http://www.gamehippo.com/? I would RTFWS (web site) if it weren't already brought to its knees by the hoards of slashdotters hoping to find their favorite game from 1983.

Gamehippo.com
Check out Gamehippo.com. They have a nice listing of freeware titles, with comments, editorial review, and peer review.

GameHippo
Most sites i have found in the past are geared towards windows. GameHippo is absolutley huge, but it only caters to windows.

GameHippo
I like to look around GameHippo for freeware games. Reviews and quite a large listing of games. The user comments are full of trolls, so don't take them all that seriously.

Re:Proper shareware is pretty much dead.Proper try before you buy shareware is fairly dead...Anyone know of a shareware site that lists crippleware as such, and not calling "X Lite" (where Lite means crippled) proper shareware when it's only a thinly veiled marketing release?
(shameless self-promotion mode)
There's always Jardinains!. Shareware in the old-school, send-me-a-donation-if-you-like-but-above-all-shar
e -it-with-your-friends style. It's only a few months old, and even though it's a Breakout clone at heart, it's got a few new twists to keep things interesting. (Besides, isn't just about everything these days a clone of something else?)I figured I wouldn't make any money off it (which has not been entirely true; about 1 out of every 10,000 downloads yields a donation.) The sheer good karma of making a program like this makes it worth the effort.
As far as sites, check out gamehippo.com. They maintain an excellent listing of truly freeware games, and have some nice features like user comments and ratings. Each game has an editor's review.

Re:Rocky's Boots / Loadrunner
"Rocky's Boots" was a great game. A logic puzzle game, tied into a begining electronics course, all fun. Probably the closest thing recently would be "The Incredible Machine".
BTW, Warren Robinett also wrote the Atari 2600 game "Adventure". You can find it for the PC as Indenture.
The original "Loadrunner" was also great, and had a good level editor you could use to create your own levels.
